Plan
• Introduce the Code of Good Impact Practice• Look at a self assessment toolkit – Measuring Up!• Look at an indicator in small groups• Show links to other resources
Impact and Funding
• Funders want impact• People who support us want to know the difference we
make• We should want to know if what we do makes a
difference
• We need to demonstrate our impact!
Impact
• Positive and negative• Planned and unplanned
• Upstream as well as downstream• Short term and long term
• I know it, you know it, we know it, no-one knows it.
Impact
• Impact: the broad or longer-term effects of a project or organisation’s work (also referred to as the difference it makes). This can include effects on people who are direct users of a project or organisation’s work, effects on those who are not direct users, or effects on a wider field such as government policy.
Impact practice
Impact practice: the activities that an organisation does to focus on its impact. This can include planning desired impact, planning how to measure it, collecting information about it, making sense of that information, communicating it and learning from it.
8 Principles
Measuring Up!
• An online self assessment tool • Based on the 8 principles• Contains guidance and resources to help you make a
good assessment
Choosing tools
• A tool is made up of– Method (questionnaire, interview, observation)– Who, when, where, how.– Data collation, analysis and reporting
• How to choose?– Appropriate for your organisation’s values– Meets the needs of key stakeholders– Is easy for staff and volunteers to use– Works with existing systems– Gives robust and reliable information
• Check out the Impact Hub http://inspiringimpact.org/listings/
Telling others
• Communicating results honestly– Internally – staff, volunteers and service users– Externally – funders, politicians, general public
• Positive and negative impacts?• If it doesn’t work – stop doing it!
