Environmentally Responsible Products

100% of the Beautyrest Pocketed Coil spring

products are made with recycled steel.

Many of the fabrics used in Simmons mattresses are

derived from cultivated wood fibers to be partially

sustainable. These fabrics meet Oeko-Tex 100

standards, which are internationally recognized

safety standards for harmful substances.

By increasing the lifespan of a traditional Beauty-

rest or Beautyrest Black mattress, the EverNU

mattress top from Simmons is making it possible for

hotels to replace their mattresses less frequently.

The polyurethane foams in all Simmons mattresses

are CertiPUR-US-certified,verifying they are low-

VOC and free from ozone-depleting CFCs. The certi-

fied foam products are made without PBDE flame

retardants, lead, mercury, prohibited phthalates and

other potentially harmful materials.

All Beautyrest mattresses from Simmons Hospitality

Bedding are available with optional Crypton

mattress fabrics, which provide a permanent

moisture barrier, enabling a hotel mattress to be

cleaned instead of replaced.

The wood in the EnduroTECH foundation istypically sourced from forests certified by the

Sustainable Forestry Initiative and can be recycled

at the end of a foundations useful life.

Waste Reduction

Simmons has a zero-waste policy and participates in

national recycling programs for manufacturing waste

such as fabric, wood, foam and coil scrap.

Since 2007, Simmons has recycled more than

23 million pounds of materials that otherwise

would have ended up in landfills.

Energy Efficiency

Each Simmons plant is strategically located to help

minimize the use of fuel and energy during the

delivery process.

Simmons has installed T-5 or T-8 fluorescent lighting

in 14 of its manufacturing facilities. The new lighting

reduces energy use by 32 percent to 39 percent

when compared to traditional T-12 lighting systems.

Employees at eight Simmons manufacturing

facilities use high-efficiency air compressors to

minimize energy consumption. Because the machines

only use the amount of force needed to complete a

task, no extra power is wasted.

The steel used to manufacture our custom

whiteboards is 70% recycled

The hardboard (MDF) we use for our

whiteboards is 80% pre-consumer

recycled content

Our aluminum frames are composed of aminimum of 75% post-industrial scrap

Our environmentally-friendly coating is VOC-

free, so there are no emissions from the coating

applied during or after the process. A thin film is

applied to the whiteboards in a wet form using

an electron beam, which uses very little energy

(1 kilowatt/24 square meters) compared to other

thermal or convection curing processes.

We recycle 100% of the transfer paper used in

the printing/sublimation process of our custom

whiteboards.

We supply alcohol-based markers with much

less odor than the traditional acetone marker to

accompany our whiteboards, which reduce irrita-

tion in sensitive environments such as hospitals.

Our entire manufacturing process is CARB

compliant with no formaldehyde emissions.

RECYCLED VINYL WALL COVERING ADDS A

GREEN DIMENSION TO HOTEL RENOVATION

Situated on the campus of the University

of Cincinnati, a popular hotel accentuates its

interiors with the red and black colors of the

schools fighting Bearcats. But the 206-roomIACC-certified conference hotel has gone

green with its latest renovation of corridors

and elevator lobbies. Through a first-of-

its kind program called Second-Look, the

hotel reclaimed 2,100 yards of wall covering

and purchased 3,000 yards of recycled wall

covering.

The hotel removed vinyl wall coverings

from six floors and placed the material in rec-

lamation bins rather than dumpsters. These

were shipped to the Second-Look program tobe recycled into new wall coverings by Louis-

ville-based LSI Wallcovering.

The property brand specified new vinyl

wall covering from the Second-Look pro-

gram. The wall covering is expected to last for

10+ years and can be recycled again through

the Second-Look program.

According to the propertys general man-

ager, recycling the wall covering was the right

thing to do. They needed vinyl wall covering

for its durability and performance, and theywere able to support their green program by

finding a new way to reduce, reuse and re-

cycle.

Introduced in early 2007, the Second-Look

program won sustainability awards at three

international design shows and received

the Editors Choice awards from Architectural

Record and Interiors & Sources magazines.
