Every child is born with musical ability but like most things, if you don’t use it you lose it. So why is learning to play a musical instrument so beneficial?

• Playing music increases memory and reasoning capacity, time management skills and eloquence.

• Playing music improves concentration, memory and self expression.

• Playing music improves the ability to think.

• Music training improves verbal memory.

• Learning music helps under-performing students to improve.

• Music students are more likely to be good citizens.

When we understand the benefits of music to our children, there really isn’t a down side.

A balanced education that includes music produces well

rounded kids that know how to approach the world and the

challenges life throws at them. They are more confident in their own abilities, better prepared to work within a team and are learning how to contribute to society with a skill that others will enjoy. Your child doesn’t have to make music a career choice. Our best community orchestras are full of people with a wide variety of careers who continue to play music for their own enjoyment. And many of them began in a school Instrumental Music Program. So next time you’re wondering if all the practice is worth it, remember you are encouraging a leader of the future.

Do you really know why learning music is such a great thing for your child? It’s more than just an “extracurricular activity”. It has the potential to make your child a better person.

“My daughter was so excited to be on the stage, sitting amongst all the musicians in the orchestra. She proudly waved at me while the orchestra went through their sound check before the concert. She knew she was being taken seriously as a musician and I was so very proud of her. We found we really enjoyed the excitement of these concerts and we both have a new understanding of her music now. We attend Inspire! concerts every chance we get and all the orchestras make us feel just as important as they did at our very first concert.”

Unless you’re an accomplished musician yourself, it can be daunting trying to help your child progress in their music education. Their printed music is like a foreign language and how do you know that they’re practicing what they were taught by their teacher? Most parents end up reduced to two roles in their child’s musical education – taxi driver and paying the bills. Here’s the good news – parents actually have one of the most important roles in music education. Inspiration! Think about it ... who is it that encourages your child when they feel like giving up? Who heads your child’s cheer squad at band festivals and performances? Who is it that makes the sacrifices necessary for your child to participate in music in the first place? YOU! One of the biggest impacts you will have on your child in their music education is being involved and you should never underestimate the impact your involvement and encouragement has on your child and your school’s music program. It doesn’t matter that you can’t read their music. Could you ride a bike when you were teaching your child to ride theirs? I couldn’t. But my encouragement and persistence helped them to keep going until they could ride by themselves. Music is the same. It’s you who will be responsible for your child getting stuck into music long enough to reap the rewards.

You don’t have to be able to know how to play a musical instrument or even know how to read music to have a huge impact on your child’s music education.

Get involved in your child’s school music support group. If they don’t have one, start one. Your child will see your involvement as interest in them and be encouraged to persist with music. Show your child what their instrument can sound like by taking them to an Inspire! concert so they can meet the musicians and be inspired. Ask questions! Who said you were supposed to have all the answers? Sure, music is a specialised field but experts like Geoff Secomb Music can provide you with all the assistance you need. With their contacts and knowledge of the professional and educational world of music, they can point you in the

right direction and show you that, as a parent, you are the most important person in your child’s music education. So be encouraged – instrumental music is NOT just another subject at school. It’s a journey that your child can enjoy for life, no matter what they do with it.
