As we enter a new year, we find ourselves reflecting on the memorable moments that define who we are and what we have accomplished in the past year. Moving forward, we too, aspire to conquer new heights, pick up something new, or better ourselves in one way or another. This aspiration comes from

the influences of and inspiration from other students, staff, role models and past experiences, that help us come up with new ideas and challenges. Much potential and possibilities lie ahead of us to explore, to make ourselves better. As Williams Shakespeare aptly puts it… “We know what we are, but know not what we may be.”

While 2014 signifies a return for existing and progressing students, it also marks a new beginning for freshmen at Taylor’s. Hence, it is important for new students to start off their study experience on the right footing, especially new international students who are making Taylor’s and Malaysia their new home away from home for the next few years.

With this in mind, Student Experience have enlisted the help of numerous student ambassadors and leaders for the purpose of engaging freshmen throughout the Orientation Programme. The Orientation Programme is vital in boosting new students’ confidence and know-how, in inspiring and leading them to finding their way through their first year at Taylor’s. I encourage you to read on to find out how our student ambassadors and leaders have been inspirational in enhancing the first year experience for new students.

In this issue you will discover a variety of programmes that range from social integration activities to purposeful projects benefitting charities; those focusing on networking and student development; and also on cultural exchange and learning. On the sports front, I would like to acknowledge the achievements by our sportsmen and women who have made great strides in championing Taylor’s at major sports tournaments.

At the end of the day, it is “for” and “because of” the students who make our work at Student Experience meaningful and inspiring. It is rewarding in itself to see flowers bloom from little buds, or to witness eagles take flight. The SE department merely provides the support and avenues for student development, while it is the students themselves who make the accomplishments and exciting experiences possible.

Highlights - Orientation

In ushering the year 2014, a new cohort of Taylor’s University students were welcomed during the Integrated Orientation programme. In anticipation of the new students’ arrival, and to

provide them with an Awesome Customer Experience (ACE), 55 Orientation Leaders were enlisted to provide support to and ease new students’ transition into university life.

To best prepare the Orientation Leaders in engaging the freshmen, Student Development Hub held an Orientation Leaders Camp with the theme “Lead, Love & Serve.” The participants of the camp truly appreciated the sessions, which guided the discovery of their personality types; explored the deeper meaning of serving one another and the importance of teamwork. One can imagine the inspired Orientation Leaders as they rolled out from the camp, ready to receive the new students!

The Orientation Leaders hosted 366 Foundation and Diploma students during the February intake and 1,509 new Diploma and Degree students for the March intakes. Other engaging activities for Orientation include Campus Hunt, Safety Workshop, Clubs and Societies Day and Orientation Parties themed “Childhood Fantasy” for February intake and “Bohemian Nights” for the combined March intakes.

Freshmen were also introduced to an array of student-driven activities during their first months at Taylor’s. For the February intake, 26 Student Organisations participated in the Clubs and Societies Day to recruit members for their organisations whereas the March intakes’ instalment drew the involvement of 43 Student Organisations and recorded the patronage of 1,340 new and existing students.

To top it off, the Student Council representatives also made it a point to organise meet and greet sessions with new students from the two intakes. The “Get 2 Know Student Council” sessions were definitely a proactive way to make known the council’s presence as the voice of students on campus.

Highlights - Orientation

Welcome Receptions are specially organised by the International Student Services (ISS) during

the start of intakes to welcome new international students to Taylor’s University. These informative sessions are held every Friday to give new international students the opportunity to meet support staff and student leaders who help ensure the well-being of the students.

Among the vital presentations that students take away from the sessions are an overview of Malaysian culture and living, important visa endorsement and renewal matters by International Office (IO), and health insurance information by Health Services Centre (HSC) to better prepare new students for their stay here in Malaysia. The international students who attend the briefings also get to converse with senior students from the Best Buddies Connect (BBC) and Taylor’s University International Student Council (TUISC). Chatting with experienced senior students has helped them learn first-hand what it is like settling into a new campus, city and country.

During the larger intakes, a Welcome Party was also hosted by the BBC to provide new international students the opportunity to mingle and network with other international students. Some light-hearted ice breaking games were organised to help make the newcomers more comfortable around one another. This time, as the Welcome Party coincided with Chinese New Year celebrations, students were also treated to Yee Sang (raw fish), mandarin oranges and traditional Chinese cookies.

Overall, representatives from ISS, IO, HSC, BBC and TUISC have been reaching out to new international students to reassure them that a support system is ever-present to assist international students in times of needs, be it social, security, medical or visa support.

Highlights - Orientation

BBC, with the support of ISS and TUISC, brought new international students for a day out to Kuala Lumpur in the “KL Fun Trip.” Held in the month of March, these trips which usually occur four times a year

are organised at the start of major intakes throughout the year.

This time around, participants were brought to KL Sentral to learn about the different modes of public transportation available to them. Under the guidance of the Best Buddies Leaders and representative from TUISC, it was also the first attempt by most of them in purchasing tickets and commuting by LRT to Central Market. Once there, the students browsed through local handicrafts and artworks as well as sampled local food and titbits.

The next LRT stop was KLCC where the students took in the sights (and photo opportunities) around the KLCC Park and with the Petronas Twin Towers. The trip concluded with shopping till their hearts’ content and a bus ride back to the Lakeside Campus.

Support University Mission

A world renowned leader in beauty and cosmetics, L’Oréal is holding its Brandstorm competition, an annual International Marketing Challenge open to

undergraduate students to compete for the best marketing strategy and communication campaign for one of L’Oréal’s international brand. Now into its 22nd year, 2014’s challenge is to devise a comprehensive multi-channel strategy to recruit and retain male customers for their skincare brand Kiehl’s, and to increase its brand awareness.

Taylor’s University was the Grand National Champion in 2012 and this year, our students are eager to win back the title for the second time around. It’s no mean feat to stand out among a cast of outstanding marketers and yet, seven teams competed in the Campus Finals on 8th January for a chance to represent the institution at the National Semi Finals. The teams, comprising of six from the Business School and one from School of Communication, were given 15 minutes each to present their marketing strategies and products based on a given case study, concluding with a five minutes Q&A.

After careful deliberation by the judges from the Business School, Career Services Centre and L’Oréal, and due to the high quality of presentations, five out of the seven teams emerged as Campus Finalists. According to the L’Oréal judges, this is the biggest number of Campus Finalists to come from a single institution. The five teams had then competed at the National Semi Finals held on 13th February against teams from other private and public Malaysian universities. Triumphantly, Taylor’s teams “The Hashtags” and “Trilogics” made it to the National Finals to be held on 6th May.

The winning team from the National Finals will receive an all-expense paid trip to Paris, as they compete at the global arena on 20th June with other countries at the L’Oréal Brandstorm 2014 International Finals. We wish our two finalists the best, in hopes that the odds be in your favour!

Driving Gen-Y Employability

On 15th January, PruAction Team International collaborated with Career Services Centre to organise the “Gen-Y Employability and Empowerment Program.”

The objective of this workshop is to equip our students with up-to-date insights about the job market, challenges in hiring and recommended strategies for Gen-Y to enhance their employability and entrepreneurship spirit.

Some of the areas covered during the two-hour workshop includes:

• Current job market landscape in Malaysia• Gen-Y hiring trends from a recruiter’s point of view• Employability and entrepreneurship • Strategies for job hunting• Effective resume writing• Interview do’s and don’ts • Mock interview (where students get to practice their interview skills and observe others in staged scenarios)

The 83-strong audience comprise mainly of Taylor’s Business School students, with over 97% of them finding the sessions very informative, insightful and valuable in their preparations for the landing their desired jobs.

Professional Networking and Exchangeat the Asia-Pacific Level

The Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) Annual Conference and Exhibition is one of the most distinguished forums in the region for bringing

together policy makers and education experts from around the world to enhance professional skills and share new developments in international education.

Taylor’s University participated at the recent APAIE 9th Annual Conference and Exhibition from 17th to 21th March in Seoul. The conference features a large scale exhibition with over 100 booths. Taylor’s University representatives had the opportunity to network with 43 potential and existing exchange partners throughout this event, as well as to further establish its presence in the regional professional circles.

Counselling and Psychological ServicesCentre Open Day - It’s Good to Talk!

As part of the welcoming feature for University Orientation, all new and returning students were invited to participate in the Open Day at Counselling and

Psychological Services Centre (CPSC) on 6th February. The event aimed to introduce and familiarise students with CPSC facilities and support services as well as those of Health Services Centre (HSC). Welcoming gifts such as mandarin oranges, chocolates, biscuits and drinks were provided at the recently renovated centre which is located at Block A, Level 2.

Visitors had the opportunity to freely chat with professional counsellors informally, to find out more about CPSC’s emotional and psychological support, as well as the student disability services. For inquiries or to have a casual chat with a counsellor, students or staff may contact CPSC at 03-5629 5024 / 5025.

New Board forPostgraduateStudent Council

Taylor’s University Student Council (TUSC) made a historic visit to the National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU)

on 21st February for the purpose of networking, sharing of best practices and forging a long and sustainable relationship amongst both the Student Unions and TUSC. It was indeed a very fruitful visitation as both sets of student leaders shared their strategies and approaches in handling welfare issues in their respective campuses, as well as activities and events that promote integration within the campus. As a next step, TUSC looks forward to hosting the Student Unions from NUS and NTU at Taylor’s University in the near future for collaborative initiatives.

Taylor’s University Postgraduate Student Council (PGSC) Nomination and Elections were

successfully conducted on 28th February. We are pleased to have on board the new PGSC who looks into the non-academic welfare matters of all postgraduate students at Taylor’s. We trust that they will continue the great work done by the previous PGSC board of 2013, who had successfully completed their term of office. The PGSC can be contacted at pgsc@taylors.edu.my.

Apart from the visitations to Singapore, TUSC also hosted a networking dinner on 4th March at our Truffles restaurant. Student Council representatives from HELP University, SEGi University, Nilai University, Sunway University and UCSI University attended the dinner, which promoted exchange of best practices and getting to know one another better.

Engagement with Community

Community Efforts -Tech4All and RAWRAIESEC in Taylor’s University students began the new year

with two outreach projects. The TechCycle “Tech4All” Campaign was held from 13th to 14th February, where

students and staff were encouraged to drop off old and unwanted electronic gadgets, ranging from computers, laptops and even mobile phones. Through the support given by SOLS Tech (http://www.solstech.org/), a technology and solutions provider which refurbishes and donates these gadgets to the poor, old computers and mobile devices are given a new lease of life for the benefit of the less privileged. Such community efforts help to bridge the digital divide between the those of us who can easily afford tech gadgets with the poor.

These gadgets are then redistributed to NGOs such as “myKasih” and “DoSomethingGood”, where they are eventually used to provide further educational support for the children under their care. Besides managing to collect mobile phones and other gadgets, the AIESEC team helped create awareness of technology recycling for the benefit of the needy in the community as well as the environment.

AIESEC’s other signature community project titled “Raising Awareness with Reaction”, or popularly known as the RAwR campaign, was held on from 10th to 14th March on campus as well. With the purpose of creating greater awareness of causes for humanity, they received 1,810 sign ups at their booth rendering their stand against human trafficking. A further 130 participants also signed an online pledge to reward foreign domestic workers with a day off in a week. The AIESEC team also managed to raise RM271.70 through the sales of merchandise to execute future RAwR projects.

Hansung University - Learning English with a Dose of Culture at Taylor’s

Hansung University and Taylor’s University recently arranged a 4th English Language Programme for Korean students at our campus. Held in January, a group of 26 students

from Hansung University was hosted by eight friendly Global Ambassadors throughout their four-week stay in Malaysia.

The course aims to enhance their English Language skills, in which they have to go through a series of English Lessons every Monday to Friday, conducted by our Language Centre instructors. In addition to that, this group of students were also given the opportunity to enrich their cultural knowledge and appreciation of Malaysia. During one of the weekends, the students participated in a Homestay Programme that gave them a better understanding of traditional Malaysian lifestyle by experiencing it first-hand.

A Cultural Experiencefor our German Friends

On 20th January, Taylor’s University hosted 25 tourism students from Cologne Business School, Germany. The students, who were accompanied by two faculty

members, came on a learning tour of Malaysia, with Taylor’s University as one of their stopovers. The German students were given the opportunity to better know some of the local students who taught them much about Malaysian culture and flavour. The best part of the experience came when the visiting students were given the chance to go on a short campus tour while parading traditional Malaysian attire!

In the month of January, Taylor’s were privileged to receive and host 19 students from Lidköping University, Sweden. As it was their first time visiting Taylor’s University, this group of students

were here for three months to complete a short tourism course which was conducted by the School of Hospitality, Tourism and Culinary Arts (TCHT). Besides the short course, the visitors experienced Malaysian hospitality, through mingling with local students, staff, as well as the warm reception by our Global Ambassadors.

Global Mobility

Manchester Metropolitan Universityon Malaysia’s Tourism BrandingThis past February, Taylor’s University hosted a group

of eight students from Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), United Kingdom who were

accompanied by two faculty members. The theme of their study trip to Malaysia is “KL Project – Malaysia Branding Experience”, where the visiting students must work on a project which focuses on the overall Malaysia Tourism Plan. These eight students did not have to work on this daunting project alone as our Masters of International Hospitality Management Programme students were assigned as their project buddies. When the final day of the programme came, the eight students presented their proposals to the faculty members of TCHT and also to the representative of Tourism Malaysia. Their insights were truly appreciated and received constructively by all, especially since it comes from a foreign point of view and interpretation.

Building and Facilities MaintenanceI was in one of the washrooms on-campus for a toilet break.

I had my DSLR camera strapped over my shoulder at that time. While washing my hands, my camera accidentally struck the sink and my DSLR’s

filter and lens cap detached and fell to the floor.

It was a pleasant surprise to me when a very helpful janitor who was present picked up my accessories and offered me a clean cloth to undo any blemishes on my stuff. He even went through the trouble to find a clean cloth from the store.

My shout-out to him is to “keep it up!” as we need efficient janitors (and workers in general) like that.

Japanese Interns’ Experienceat Taylor’s University

When two Japanese students from Doshisha University - Megumi Terada and Daichi Miki arrived in Malaysia to commence their one-month internship programme,

they didn’t know what to expect. From the first day of their arrival here in Malaysia, they have developed a strong liking for Malaysian food, with Nasi Lemak and Teh Tarik ranking amongst some of their favourite foods.

Throughout the duration of their internship programme with the Global Mobility Office, they had the opportunity to know not only Malaysian students but also other international students through their participation in exchange student activities. Just as what other international guests have echoed before, Daichi Miki had a wonderful opportunity to learn about the different types of culture and customs in Malaysia, which has helped him “gain a multicultural understanding and appreciation.” Megumi Terada added that this internship programme was a valuable experience for her, as it allowed her to enjoy the Malaysian way-of-life like the locals, and to work at an office such as the one at Taylor’s. The two interns were grateful to truly experience life, hospitality and work the Malaysian and Taylor’s way!

Top 8 Overall Achievement

The 6th instalment of the annual Putrajaya Hot Air Balloon Fiesta held in March was a fan-favourite fiesta which has a huge following internationally. To coincide with the festival,

Best Buddies Connect organised its first Timeout trip of the year to the Fiesta on the 29th for the benefit of new and existing international students at Taylor’s. In line with promoting social integration on-campus, 34 international and local students joined the trip, which included the Best Buddies Leaders. The group made their way to Putrajaya in the evening in order to catch the free-flying balloon show, fireworks and the Night Glow event that features a synchronised music and light display.

The students were fascinated by the aerial display of 15 hot air balloons representing different countries and famous brands of the world. Each hot air balloon were operated by teams from England, Denmark, France, Australia, Taiwan and more.

There were also other attractions and activities available at the Fiesta, including Helicopter Rides, Water Zorbing, Paintballing and Wall Climbing. Gardens and open spaces were converted into large picnic areas with plenty of food and game stalls within the vicinity. The students went around taking photographs of

the balloons, tried their hand at some games and chilled out on beanbags at the picnic area while watching the balloons float in the sky.

In the Malaysian Institution of Higher Learning Games (Sukan Institusi Pengajian Tinggi - SUKIPT) recently held at UITM Shah Alam from 3rd to 16th February, the Taylor’s University contingent consisting

of 36 participants represented the institution in six events. Each event contributed to the medal tally for the contingent, with Taylor’s University emerging 8th overall (out of 107 institutions that participated). Our medal tally haul were six Golds, four Silvers and nine Bronzes.

Our star of the games was athlete Khoo Cai Lin, who competed in swimming and was recognized as the most outstanding female athlete with the award of “Sportswoman of SUKIPT 2014.”

MMUTennis EventBreakthrough

From 28th to 30th March, Taylor’s Tennis Team participated in the MMU Inter-Varsity / Open Tennis Tournament, which was organised by the host institution and the Melaka Tennis Club. This is an annual

event that Taylor’s Tennis Club participates in, and for the first time our representatives delivered an astonishing result, emerging champions in the Inter-Varsity Category and 1st Runner-Up in the Open Category. This tournament has been a fantastic experience and outcome for our tennis players as they played against both the university tennis clubs as well as reputed public tennis clubs.

represented by eight teams at this inter-varsity event, in which one of our teams emerged as champion once again, in defence of the title for the 4th consecutive year. Despite having almost an all-new set of players in the squad, our team coach and players exhibited 110% determination and effort in continuing our winning tradition. Bravo!!!!

In 2013 (the Year of the Snake), Student Experience (SE) held our the first get-together at the Crocodile Farm Seafood Restaurant in Subang Jaya. With memories of laughter and a

good dining experience then, the SE family decided to hold the celebration once again at the same venue this time round on 12th February, by welcoming the Year of the Horse!

Some group games were played to occupy the time for the early comers, which included arranging the 12 Chinese Zodiac Symbol Pictures in the correct sequence, correctly picking out animals which do not belong to the Chinese Zodiac, and pinning the horse’s tail on the pictured animal blindfolded! In between the dishes that were being served, quizzes were conducted where five group volunteers drew questions from a box which related to the Chinese Zodiac. Participants who answered correctly got to draw a prize for themselves.

The evening ended with a special hamper lucky draw by Ms. Angela Pok, which went by first-draw elimination. Ms. Ooi Yek Yen of Career Services ended up with her name being drawn last, and went home with the hamper of goodies. Overall it was another entertaining night of breaking the ice between new and seasoned members of the SE family, filled with much fun and laughter as before. As described by many members of the SE family, we are all a crazy, fun-loving 80-strong bunch... and this infectious trait is visibly passed on to the students under our guidance, care and tutelage!

NewCreative DirectorAffectionately known as Ms. Lin by students and colleagues

alike, this bubbly and cheerful member from International Student Services is often seen dressed tastefully well,

with her appearance always graced by her warm smile. An avid computer-gamer and board-gamer, she also loves My Little Pony and her desk is often decked up creatively with plushies and artworks. Lin also has a flair with writing and creative direction when it comes to advertising and publicity materials for student activities.

Please welcome her as the new Creative Director of our SE Newsletter. At the same time, we thank our previous “CD” Eddy Lim and bid him adieu as he moves on to a new role within Taylor’s University. We truly appreciate his creative input, skill and contributions to the SE family, for all its design works.
