Hyperten- sion is often referred to as the “silent killer” because it rarely causes symptoms. It is a major risk factor for heart disease, stroke, congestive heart failure, and kidney disease. Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) is an effective approach to evaluate arteries and veins in the body. A new non-contrast MRA tool is now available at Inland Imaging for the accurate and reliable screening of blood vessels to detect heart disorders, stroke and vascular diseases. "We now offer a comprehensive MR angiography exam without the use of gadolinium contrast. Inhance Inflow MRA is a safer way to perform MRA of the renal arteries, peripheral vascular system, and carotid arteries, without giving gadolinium to our high-risk patients, and still obtain a reliable diagnosis,” said Jenny Brown, Coordinator of MRI Services. The non-contrast nature of Inhance Inflow MRA is an alternative method for imaging this popu- lation of high-risk patients. In addition to being a safer alternative, it is a consistent and accurate method of assessing the renal arteries, peripheral vasculature, and carotid arteries. While MRA with gadolinium is still considered the gold standard, MRA using the Inhance software is a robust alternative for those patients who are at increased risk for this exam. These may include patients with conditions such as hypertension, diabetes, renal insufficiency, organ transplant, or a compromised immune system. "This new technology significantly expands the patient pool that can benefit from vascular specific imaging and without additional risk to many who already have compromised kidney function," says interventional radiologist and Inland Imaging physician Dr. Ken Symington.

WORKPLACE WELLNESS PROGRAM COMES IN ALL SHAPES AND SIZESProgram Centered on Needs of Individual EmployeesStudies have shown that employee wellness can boost morale, improve health and fitness and increase productivity in the workplace. Inland Imaging offers its employees convenient ways to fit exercise into their work schedules. Each year, Inland Imaging offers free biometric screening to track the overall health of the organization and to raise employee awareness of his or her own health.

In response to the screening, several programs have been initiated to help improve employee wellness. These include exercise classes at Inland Imaging three times a week. Work out facilities in several Inland Imaging

locations make it more convenient for employees to stay committed to a healthy lifestyle. In addition, Inland Imaging organized a Biggest Loser competition.

These programs have given employees the opportunity to have a support system to get fit, lose weight and adopt life-long healthy eating and lifestyle choices while having fun.

Inland Imaging’s employee wellness program is modeled after other large organizations that have demonstrated success in implementing wellness programs, such as Healthwise—health information publishing, Johnson & Johnson—health care products manufacturing, Lowe’s—home improvement, MD Anderson Cancer Center—health care. They follow these pillars for an effective workplace wellness program:

1. Multilevel Leadership

Creating a culture of health takes passionate, persis-tent, and persuasive leadership at all levels—from the executive-suite to middle managers to the people who have “wellness” in their job descriptions.

2. Alignment

A wellness program should be a natural extension of a firm’s identity and aspirations. Don’t forget that a cultural shift takes time.

3. Scope, Relevance, and Quality

Wellness programs must be comprehensive, engag-ing, and just plain excellent. Otherwise, employees won’t participate.

4. Accessibility

Aim to make low- or no-cost services a priority. True on-site integration is essential because convenience matters.

5. Partnerships

Active, ongoing collaboration with internal and external partners, including vendors, can provide a program with some of its essential components and many of its desirable enhancements.

6. Communications

Wellness is not just a mission—it’s a message. How you deliver it can make all the difference. Sensitivity, creativity, and media diversity are the cornerstones.

Inland Imaging provided free X-rays for the third year to participants of Hoopfest during the annual two-day event. A total of 149 X-rays were performed using a state-of-the art porta-ble digital X-ray unit in a tent centrally located in Riverfront Park. In collaboration with area medical professionals, players didn’t have to wait long for an answer and within minutes injuries were diagnosed.

“My son played Hoopfest this weekend and was involved in a tumble on the court. There he was treated quickly, professionally and carefully. I can’t thank you enough for having such a pro-fessional operation set up that a broken leg was diagnosed within 30 minutes of the incident,” said a mother of an injured partici-pant from Bozeman, MT.

FREE Screening Mammograms were Offered in SeptemberThe American Cancer Society recommends that women age 40 and older should have a screening mammogram every year and should continue to do so for as long as they are in good health. As a part of Inland Imaging’s EVERY WOMAN CAN campaign, Inland Imaging is working to help fight one of the reported barriers to getting a mammogram: lack of insurance or limited funds.

On September 7, 2012, Inland Imaging, the region’s only network of comprehensive breast imaging centers is offering free screening mammograms to women

The free mammogram day imposed no financial qualifiers and is for any woman over the age 40 who is uninsured, underinsured, or has a high deductible, and is showing no current breast symptoms.

Inland Imaging has capacity to perform as many as 500 free mammograms in one day. In the past two Free Mammogram Days, more than 500 women have been served.

“We know that early detection from breast cancer screening, can greatly improve chances of survival. Mammography is still the best tool we have to diagnose this disease,” said Kathleen Wilson, COO of Inland Imaging. “The radiologists and staff of Inland Imaging want to do our part to help every woman who should have a mammogram receive one this year.”

NEW TREATMENT FOR ISCHEMIC STROKEDevice May Help Doctors Save More Lives

Each year nearly 700,000 people in the U.S. suffer from acute ischemic stroke—that’s nearly 2,000 people a day effected by stroke. In partnership with Providence Sacred Heart Medical Center, Christopher Zylak, MD, Inland Imaging Interventional Radiologist, now offers a new treatment for acute ischemic stroke patients.

Dr. Zylak recently became the first physician to use this device in Spokane at Providence Sacred Heart Medi-cal Center.

The Covidien Solitaire™ FR revascularization device is a mechanical thrombectomy system that combines in a single device, the ability to restore blood flow and retrieve clots in patients experiencing acute ischemic stroke.

A recent clinical study showed that patients treated with the Solitaire FR device had higher rates of neuro-logical function and reduced death from stroke three months after the procedure, compared to patients treated with an alternate device.

“The results of this clinical study were impressive. I am pleased we are able to bring this new device to patients in Spokane,” said Dr. Zylak. “We are now able to offer stroke patients a new option for treatment of this debilitating disease.”Stroke is a disease that affects the arteries leading to and within the brain. Ischemic stroke occurs when a blood vessel that carries oxygen and nutrients to the brain is blocked by a clot.

According to the American Heart Association, stroke is the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. and is a leading cause of long-term disability. In 2010, stroke cost the U.S. an estimated $54 billion, including the cost of health-care services, medications and missed days of work.

About the Solitaire FR Flow Restoration Device

The Solitaire FR flow restoration system is a stent-based thrombectomy system from Covidien, a leading global provider of health-care products. The system combines the ability to revascularize and retrieve the clot in a single device. It is designed to be passed through the obstruction and deployed, offering the potential for flow restoration and the ability to retrieve clots in patients experiencing acute ischemic stroke.

New Tool to Detect Silent KillerContinued from page 1 Inhance is a series of non-contrast enhanced MR angiography sequences that uses a multitude of advanced techniques to enhance the ability of MR to visualize flowing blood with fewer artifacts than in the past. The Inflow sequences deliver high quality images in short scan times while simultaneously eliminating the need and the expense for contrast injections and also the need for patient breath holding.
