Healthy habit for wellbeing: Studies have shown

that in order to flourish and thrive, our students (and

indeed all of us!) require five positive experiences to

every one negative experience. This is a wonderful

challenge for each of us to take on – to impact

positively on others, and therefore contribute to their

health and wellbeing.

Have a terrific week!

The Ashton Scholastic Book Sale will be on for 3 days

in the school foyer.

When - Monday 15th - Wed 17th June

It will be open just before school, for 15 mins at

lunchtime and until 4pm after school on each of the 3

days.

Students will bring home wish lists, and credit card

details can be filled out on them if you can't make it to

the sale.

We hope you will get into the spirit of the sale and help

us raise some much needed funds, while finding some

great reading material!

Friday 26th

June 2015 is the last day of

Term 2. The SRC will be asking students to come to school out

of uniform on this day. If they do SRC ask students to

make a gold coin donation to the ‘Young Diggers’

charity (please read pages 9-10).

All students will be dismissed from school at

1:30 p.m. The students will only require a morning play

lunch as they can have their lunch once they are home

that day. We will finish off the term with a 1:10 p.m.

assembly which all parents are invited to attend. We

have some awards to hand out, some presentations and

some performances for assembly. Please come along.

Good luck to all students and their families during

the term break!

At assembly this week Responsibility was announced as our School Value of the week. That means teachers are looking

for students who are demonstrating ‘Responsibility’ to be eligible for the Student of the Week award. We encourage

parents to talk to their students about our values throughout the year.

What is Responsibility? Year 6 student, Bryce Williams read out the meaning of Respect.

‘Being responsible is a sign of growing up. It means you are willing to be accountable for your behaviour.

It means doing something to the best of your ability and keeping your agreements.’

Each week at assembly, SRC representatives remind

our students of a few important school rules. This week, SRC representatives, Tessa Thompson and

Joel Simmonds reminded our students of the

following rules:

Be mindful of visitors or workmen in our

school, especially those in trucks.

Keep our school clean- put litter in the bins!

Kicking ball games are just for the oval.

Treat others as you like to be treated.

Please discuss these rules with your children to help

ensure that they understand.

Did you hear Aidan

Paul read his diary

entry at assembly this

week? We did! He

was great!! Come

along and see who

reads next week.

On Thursday 13th August the Puckapunyal Primary School will be conducting a Team Triathlon and a

Defence School Transition Aide Message Back at school: I trust that everyone has had a smooth and

satisfactory beginning to the school year. Changing schools,

beginning school for the first time and even returning for another

school year can be daunting for students and parents. It is great to see

parents eager to support their children at this time and be an integral

part of their education. If you have any concerns, or just feel like a

chat about school and your child, please find me!

NEW UNIFORM

We have recently had a new shipment of uniform arrive that includes

shorts, tops, tracksuit pants and hats. Some parents have been waiting

on this to arrive.

Learning Words

If a word is used regularly by your child in writing, provide help with

learning to spell the word after writing.

Ask your child to:

Look at the whole word carefully

Close their eyes and picture the word in their mind

Say the word and trace it in the air

Say the word again

Write the word

Check their spelling with the correct word

Enjoy helping your child to spell those “tricky” words!!!

Regards, Mrs Challis

Look at what is happening

AROUND OUR SCHOOL

Photographs and writing by Year 6 students Lincoln, Aiden and Will

Keep Our School Beautiful

Every Thursday some Year 5/6 students go out to do Keep Our School Beautiful.

We all dug up the soil on the path and put the soil in to the Memorial Garden so that the

oak tree will grow in the middle. The students had so much fun that Aiden and Dominic

wanted to make a gardening show with all the kids in it. How fun would that be to be a star

in a show? The other things that we have done have been sweeping, planting poppies,

planting strawberries and rosemary.

Grade 5/6 Indonesian Classes

In today’s Year 5/6 Indonesian class, we learnt

how to ask people if they were baik-baik saja

(well), or biasa saja (not bad), or kurang baik

(not well). We also learnt how to ask questions

in Indonesian, which is ‘apa kabar’. This means,

‘how are you?’ After that we played card games

with our Indonesian cards and at the end we

said, “sampai jumpa,” which means, ‘goodbye’

in Indonesian.

School Photos-It’s Our Time To Shine

On the 26th

May it was school photo day. All of our

students had photos taken. We had School and House

Captain, teacher, SRC, self-portraits, class and family

photos taken. Children had their best uniforms and their

best smiles on their dials on their day to shine.

Each week in the newsletter, we will give families a summary of the Teaching/Learning Focus for the week.

That can help families by: being aware of what classrooms are covering; with discussion topics at the dinner table when

discussing school (eg. ‘How are you going with addition in Numeracy this week?’); helping their children study at home,

etc. Parents have indicated that this information would be very useful. We also ask families to be aware that schools are

very busy places and events can be unpredictable at times. We therefore must remain flexible. That means, we can plan to

cover certain topics at particular times and have to change them according to arising needs.

Junior School – Preps/Foundation Rooms 3 & 6 Literacy: We are continuing to develop early writing skills with a focus on sounding out and using the golden words in

our writing. We will be focusing on the letter ‘Hh’ and the sound it makes.

Numeracy: We are beginning to learn about money.

Junior School – Year 1s Rooms 3, 8 & 9 Literacy: We are focusing on verbs (doing words): what they are and how they are used.

Numeracy: We are learning to recognize and describe Australian coins according to their value.

Junior School – Year 2s Rooms 8 & 9 Literacy: We are continuing to look at commas, exclamation marks, consolidating capital letters and full stops as well as

verbs. We are looking at synonyms (words with similar meaning) and antonyms (words with opposite meaning).

Numeracy: We are ordering, counting and recognising Australian coins and notes. We are continuing to add and

subtract.

Middle School – Years 3/4 Rooms 10 & 11 Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will work on Narratives. We will also focus on suffixes.

Numeracy: We will focus on the four processes, angles and equivalent number sentences. Tables facts will be practised

throughout the week.

Senior School – Years 5/6 Rooms 1A & 1B Literacy: During writing sessions over the next few weeks, we will focus on Narratives. We will also focus on Nouns.

In reading we will be focusing on fluency and expression.

Numeracy: We will continue with work on the four processes, the order of operations, place value, number patterns and

fractions. A continued focus will be work relating to transformation. Tables facts will be practised throughout the week.

Foundation - Year 2 The children are studying Indonesian colours this week. Their focus will be on the colour hijau (green) on Wednesday

and jingga (orange) on Friday. Indonesian word order will also be a focus; for example: balon hijau (green balloon) rumput hijau (green grass)

balon jingga (orange balon)

wortel jingga (orange carrot) Colours from previous lessons will be revised:

merah (red) biru (blue)

kuning (yellow) There's a colours page on the website Languages Online Indonesian if you'd like to follow up at home; here's a link:

http://www.education.vic.gov.au/languagesonline/indonesian/sect19/no_1/no_1.htm

Years 5-6 The children will utilize their vocabulary of greetings, saying their name and age, and how they are feeling in 'Comic Heads'

conversations.

Selamat pagi (good morning, dawn - 11am) Selamat siang (good day, 11am - 3pm)

Selamat sore (good afternoon, 3pm - dusk)

Selamat malam (good evening, dusk - dawn) Siapa nama kamu? (What's your name?)

Open since 1887

Football Under 10’s Today was the first outing for the combined Puckapunyal Tallarook Auskick U10 players. We had 11 players turn up and they

were marvellous. Euroa was generous in sharing some players with us and our kids to expand our team out to 16 players. The

kids put in great effort for all four quarters and it was great fun watching them play. We have a few things to work on for next

week against Broadford and we are really looking forward to it

Football Under 12’s The last day of Autumn saw the Puckarook U12 Football team travel to Euroa for another away game. Euroa started strong

and kicked straight but our boys were up for the challenge. Our back line started out by letting their opponents run away with

the ball but soon tightened up and slowed their scoring. Unfortunately, our height challenged team was not tall enough to

contest the high balls against Euroa’s ‘tall timber’ and they ran away with the game which was over (mercy rule) by half time.

During the second half though, our boys kept their heads up, kept chasing the ball and never gave up. Well done to the entire

team. The official score - Euroa 10.3.63 to Pucka 0.0.0.

Luke Allison, one of our smallest players, was awarded the Player of the Day due to his ability to run after the ball and the

opposition all day, his great tackling and the efforts in the pack when the ball was on the ground and in dispute. Great job,

Luke.

Football Under 16’s

The Bulldogs travelled to euro with the anticipation of a hard fought contest and that is what they got. Euroa jumped out of

the blocks with 2 early goals and then Puckarook hit back. In the second quarter Euroa capitalised on its forward entries

whilst the bulldogs were wasteful in front of goal, At half time Euroa led by 4 goals. The Puckarook spirit then kicked in and

the team lifted a gear and reversed the roles by being the more accurate team in front of gaol and narrowing the margin to just

10 points at the last change. The team then hit Euroa with all they had and when Brodie goal with only 3 minutes left on the

clock it was a 1 point ball game. Tried as hard as they might they could not penetrate the magpies backline and a goal to euroa

in the final 10 seconds of the match ensured their victory. The team put up a great fight against the reigning premiers and

should be very proud of their efforts. We now need to take the second half momentum into next week as we take on the third

placed Broadford. Final Score Puckarook 6.7.43 lost to Euroa 7.8.50

Goals: R Wade 2, C Thomson, L Kirk, B Clark, T Howe 1 Player of the Day: Dylan Wandin

Netball Under 12’s

The cold weather didn’t stop the girls from playing a great game against Euroa this week. The first quarter was very tight with

only one goal to Euroa thanks to Brooke and Taylah’s strong team work in the circle. The taller opposition kept our attacking

players working hard but Naomi in defence supported them well and kept strong pressure on through the centre to turn the ball

back our way. The second quarter was a tough one with Euroa getting a number of quick shots on the board. Amie put in a

valiant effort as goal keeper in this quarter and saw a lot of action in her first game with the team, well done. Brooke netted

two impressive goals in this quarter. The third and fourth quarter were much stronger and displayed how far the girls have

come with their movement and passes looking fluid and confident. Charlotte, Jamie and Emily worked brilliantly in attack

getting the ball down to the shooters with ease. Charlotte and Jamie both landed two great shots bringing our score to 6.

Hayley and Maddison had a number of close shots at goal and played consistently in attack. Somaiya and Caileigh were

committed in their defence; turning the play back to our attackers and helping to restrict Euroa’s score to 20. Awards this

week went to: Brooke for her enthusiasm and strength in goal shooter and keeper, Emily for her ever increasing confidence

and ability in attack, Charlotte for consistent effort and focus, and Jamie for outstanding effort and skill in attack. Keep up the

great work girls; you’re all doing tremendously well.

The U14s went out hard in their game against Euroa with the first goal of the game being scored by Erin. Taylah and Faith

were effective in centre, supported by Shelley who just seemed to be everywhere today with her leading and ability to

intercept the ball. Third quarter found the Allison girls working well together in the goal circle. The last quarter was an

excellent defensive quarter combining the skills of Chloe and Erin as they managed to keep the Euroa score down to only four

goals for the quarter. The girls are putting together some great plays and are proving they can be competitive on the court.

Euroa 37 defeat Pucka 11

Netball Under 16’s Determined Bulldogs! The league bye served the girls well, giving them a chance to work on defence and attacking drills. The

girls started off magnificently holding Euroa scoreless for the first five minutes forcing plenty of turn overs. Courtney joining

the team from under 14’s, started with a few nerves in the warm up however; she stepped up in as a goal shooter giving the

team plenty of opportunities and taking the pressure off the ever so reliable Kira.

The second quarter saw Chloe also joining the team from the under 14’s. She worked hard in defence with Tyra and Katelyn

to ensure the team remained in striking distance in the second half. Kate, who normally plays wing defence played an

attacking role today and did an absolute outstanding job.

The second half had the girls taking some risks in order to close the gap and take a win. Unfortunately today they weren’t able

to win but this week the girls did an outstanding job holding Euroa to a measly seven goals in the last quarter.

The improvement and determination was very noticeable in the girls this week. They are starting to trust their own ability and

the drills that they practice through the week.

Final score Euroa 51 defeat Pucka 20

Dear Families,

Each year, our school is involved in fundraising events. Most of these events aim to raise funds

to purchase items for school. For instance, last year we were able to use fundraising to purchase

- guided reading books for classrooms, 12 months leasing of 60 classroom computers, listening

post sets for classrooms, a new school sign, 5 new IPads, and partially contribute to the

purchasing of new basketball singlets. This will still continue!

Each year, a small amount of fundraising goes to particular charities. School Council believes

that it is important that our school community and especially our students be involved in charity

fundraising.

Fundraising for charity at school is fun, rewarding and very educational. Donating to charity

makes us feel good! It is good for our health, promotes cooperation and social connection, it

evokes gratitude and is hopefully contagious.

Recently, School Council made the decision to adopt 3 charities as our official school charities

for 2015. Please read page 10 to find out more about our official school charities and the

planned events to fundraise for them.

Official School Charities

1. Local Charity - YOUNG DIGGERS (via Defence Bank)

2. National/International Charity – THE BIG UMBRELLA

3. National Charity – LEGACY

Please do hesitate to contact me to discuss the charities.

Yours sincerely,

Kevin Warne
