The ever present, but seemingly allusive JOY!
Have you ever felt that joy is just out of your reach, that if only this would happen, or that would
happen, then you are sure you would find joy again.
I don’t know about you but from time to time I have found myself in a place where I had lost my joy. It
seemed to be just around the corner. I was sure I would find it after this situation or that encounter. But,
alas, it seemed to be always out of my reach. I had to stop and ask myself why was this? Was I content
to live without it?
So I dug into scripture; here is what I found:
But even if I am being poured out as a drink offering upon the sacrifice and
service of your faith, I rejoice and share my joy with you all. And you too, I
urge you, rejoice in the same way and share your joy with me.
Philippians 2:17-18
Rejoice in the Lord always. I will say it again: Rejoice! (Philippians 4:4).
Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see
him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious
joy, for you are receiving the end result of your faith, the salvation of your souls
(1 Peter 1:8-9).
As I read these passages, God brought to mind my last mission trip to the orphanage in Guatemala:
Early one morning I was standing in the back of the toddler room looking at 20 young three-, four- and
five-year old orphans. They were dressed in mis-matched clothes--no parents, nothing to call their own,
no toys, no pets, no one to rock them to sleep at night, or comfort them when they were sick or had a
bad dream. I was feeling quite sorry for them, really. And then I watched as they gathered around a
bench with their house mom. Tears come to my eyes as I remember the words that I heard them speak
that morning. “We may not have very much, we may not have a family, but we have the love of Jesus,
and that is enough. We rejoice for what we have been given! ”
Do I have that kind of deep and abiding sense of joy? I'm not talking about getting the right Sunday
school response to this question. Does your heart tune itself to joy?
Or, has true joy been crowded out of your life--like it has mine--by the distractions of the daily routine,
the aches and pains of aging, or the trials that circumstances can bring? I know over this last year mine
had. I allowed so many things to rob me of the joy that is rightfully mine in the Lord. No one made me
put my joy down; I did that all on my own.
I asked myself whether I had a deep and abiding sense of joy as I face life.
I'm talking about the basic orientation I have toward life at the core of my soul. Do I orient my outlook
around joy or do I see all the things that are negative, discouraging, lacking, or incomplete?
So I cried out to Jesus, unsatisfied with where I found myself. I soon noticed the common element in the
Scriptures quoted at the beginning of this page: The Lord! The Lord is the basis of true joy.
It is freely mine for the taking. God revealed to me that this joy I seemed to long for was never but an
arm’s length from me. I had let it go. I had set it down. I had chosen to walk a few steps away from
it. It was there the whole time. God was patiently waiting by my side, with all the Joy, Peace, and
Love that He wished to lavish upon me, and waiting until I was ready to pick it back up, to accept it
back into my life as the birthright He had afforded me.
And so I have picked it back up!
Today, I find myself often singing in my head, and some times out loud that sweet little song we learned
as kids:
I’ve got the joy, joy, joy, joy down in my heart,
Where?
Down in my heart.
To stay.
And I’m so happy, so very happy, I have the Love of Jesus in my heart!
I sing it to remind myself that joy is not about circumstances or what is right in the world. It isn’t about
life going just as I had planned or everyone being nice to me. It’s simply about Jesus and the price He
has already paid for my life. Its about the relationship that God offers me and the new life I have in
Him.
So if you see me humming that song, know that I am simply reminding myself that I’ve got joy and it’s
here to stay. But, good brothers and sisters, if you sense that I have seemed to misplaced my joy, as
often happens over time, feel free to remind me that I have laid it down once and again and I should
pick it back up. For I am and always will be a work in progress.

Healthy Church Cultures
-excerpts from Mike Andrews and Andy Stanley
The Andy Stanley Leadership Podcast from November 2011 was about organizational culture – the
way a group/organization expresses values/vision. It’s the way things are going, the way people are
feeling/acting/reacting, the way we do things, attitudes . . . “This is who we are & how we do things.”
Here are some things for us to consider:
We can say whatever we want in describing our vision, but if the culture of our church or ministry
doesn’t support what we say is important, then even the greatest statements have very little real value.
Every organization has an organizational culture & the leader(s) who are responsible for shaping that
culture. Are we just operating by default or are we purposefully shaping our culture? The longer a
leader(s) has been in an organization, the more responsibility they carry for the culture of that
organization.
Healthy cultures attract & keep healthy people, so the culture of an organization impacts the long term
productivity of the organization. In some cases it may be possible for the worker or layman to begin to
reshape the culture around them, but unhealthy cultures are very slow to adapt to change, so it’s a rough
road. This is no different in the church. People who have gotten serious about accomplishing the
mission passed to us from Jesus won’t be able to hang around very long in a church where not much is
happening to further that mission.
When we think of the church, we don’t always think in terms of organization/leadership, and it may
even be a little uncomfortable to talk about the church this way. The church is a different kind of
organization, where the leader is the servant, where top-down strategy was flipped over when the “head
honcho” got off His throne and picked up a cross. And while we are a living, breathing Body with Jesus
as our head, we still function organizationally. We can benefit greatly by shaping healthy cultures in our
churches and ministries.
Maybe it’s time we learn to “be still” instead of spinning our wheels – to wait for God, listen to Him, then do
what He tells us to do . . .
Are there ways we need to shift our focus away from our own members?
Could we cut down the histrionics if we’d deal with the underlying issues that are causing people to grumble
at the slightest annoyances?

Schools, “Remember, if God did not have a plan for your
life, once He brought you to faith through the Holy Spirit,
He would have simply taken you home to heaven.”

Let’s Rock (3yrs-4th grade)
Our Last Let’s Rock for the 2012-2013 school year is Sunday, May 19. We will
be having a wonderful celebration including the baptism of two of our Let’s
Rock students. We will meet in the fellowship hall that day and then going to
church for the first 20 min. After the baptisms we will then exit and proceed
down to the school gym where we will have the end of the year party and baptism celebration.
Parents can still pick up their students at 10:30am.
Club 58 (5-8th
grade)
We will be wrapping up our Wednesday evenings on May 1 with a fun party to celebrate all the
accomplishments of our kids and a great year. Also wrapping up is the Club 58 Sunday edition
on May 19. All Club 58 students who wish to attend on Sundays in the summer are welcome to
join in the youth room for the Collision Bible study.
Collision (Sr. High)
We are still holding Bible study for this age group. We will be meeting most Sundays from 9:30
to 10:30am in the youth room as usual.
VBS Decoration Time
We will be putting together VBS decorations June 10-13, 2013. We need all
youth and adults who can help from 9:00am-1:00pm those days. VBS is al-
ways such a wonderful and exciting time for the children and is due, in great
part, to the helpers we get to make those fabulous decorations.
VBS Volunteers:
If you are in the 7th grade or are 99 years young we need you! We
need VBS guides and helpers to pull off another wonderful VBS this
year. Your help is crucial. Please go to www.FLCS-oh.org and click on
the VBS banner which will lead you to a volunteer registration page.
There will also be forms available at the VBS display in the narthex. Please consider helping us
spread the Love of Jesus to the children in our neighborhood.

Stewardship of Love
Stewardship involves the trust, productive usage and return of some precious gift from God. It
could be the time allotted us for doing deeds on earth, our skills and talents needed to accom-
plish those works, our material resources accrued from exercising those abilities. Could it not
even be considered to include the love, which is the very nature of God, bestowed on us by his
Son, our beloved savior Jesus Christ? It was through love that Jesus went to the cross for us to
redeem us from our sins. How should we now respond to that selfless act? Through knowing,
following and emulating Him, as our FLCS creed suggests.
Consider the spectrum of all-encompassing love: compassion, gratefulness, forgiveness, thought-
fulness, respect, honor, consideration, mercy. We could strive to display these traits in all aspects
of our daily lives - considering others above ourselves, forgiving those who disagree or go to bat-
tle with us, hoping that others will succeed in their worthy endeavors and then rejoicing when
they do, even if to our own detriment. Does there seem to be a hurdle in achieving such behav-
ior? Yes, it may require us to seemingly put our own interests at risk, as in all forms of steward-
ship, by denying our selfish aims or by deflating our self image. But what we stand to gain is
much greater - the joy of enlightened fellowship with Christ and his church. In this true light of
love, all activities and relationships are blessed as we rely on Him to show us the way.
Jesus said, as recorded in John 13:34-35 (NLT), “So now I am giving you a new commandment:
Love each other. Just as I have loved you, you should love each other. Your love for one an-
other will prove to the world that you are my disciples”. In the words of the 1965 popular song
with lyrics by Hal David and music composed by Burt Bacharach,
"What the world needs now is love, sweet love
It's the only thing that there's just too little of..".
Sharing love from His infinite supply certainly does not impoverish us, but rather serves to enrich
all who give and receive it.
Dear FLC Family,
Gayle and I would like to offer our most heartfelt gratitude and love to our Fairlawn
Lutheran family. We have been so blessed with your constant prayers of support and healing. We
especially want to thank the Meals Ministry and others for the wonderful dinners that were
delivered; and the Prayer Shawl Ministry for the meaningful gift of a prayer shawl. We feel so
blessed to be a part of such a loving and caring congregation. May our Lord con-
tinue to bless our Family at Fairlawn Lutheran Church.
In Christian Love,
Jan

May Mission TripMay Mission Trip
FLC’s Evangelism Team has been revived. Among other things, this means we will have adult
missions trips like we did several years ago. We had two servant events (as Lutherans like to call
them) each year from 2003 through 2007. Including Jamaica, Pittsburgh, Caldwell, Cleveland,
and one of my favorites Chicken Holler, West Virginia.
Beginning this month, we will resume an adult mission trip in the spring and the fall of each year.
Our first will be May 17-18-19. We will partner with Southeast Ohio Ministries (SEOM) and
Lutheran Social Services (LSS) for this servant event.
Room and board will be at the Caldwell OH distribution center. It’s about a two hour drive
from Fairlawn, south on I-77 towards Marietta.
We have need for two groups which I will call “builders” and “organizers”. Builders will quite
likely build a wheelchair ramp for a family which has a mobility issue. Organizers will work at
the direction of Mary Woodward to help organize the Caldwell distribution center. Each of us
have the option to return Saturday evening after dinner, or Sunday after a local church service.
There is a signup sheet in the narthex. We need 12 builders and 8 organizers. Cost to the partici-
pants will be $50 to cover the cost of food, drinks, and fuel for the trip. The cost is held down
by a generous Thrivent Choice grant for which we are very grateful.
FLCS THRIVENT GRANTS APPROVED: Two FLC Thrivent Choice grants were awarded in
recent weeks at $1000 each. They are the Evangelism Ministry adult service mission to central
Ohio and the FLC Reconciliation Project being managed by Church Council.
For information on Thrivent Choice grants that might potentially fund ministries of interest to
you, contact Jim Kroeger, FLCS Thrivent Lead Advocate, at 330-864-8389 or
CHAPTER SOCIAL EVENT: The Thrivent Summit-Portage is sponsoring “A Day Out with
Thomas the Tank Engine” on Saturday, May 18. The day will feature a ride on the Cuyahoga
Valley Scenic Railway departing from the Peninsula Depot and a story during the trip. Partici-
pants are to arrive at 1030am for an 1130am departure. There will be special activities before
and after the excursion.
Tickets are $7.00 (a $14 value) for adults and children over 2 years of age. Children under 2 do
not require a ticket, but will not have a seat of their own. Seating is limited and ordering
deadline is May 11.
For tickets and other information, contact Ron Bergen at 330-922-9923 or [email protected].
FUTURE CHAPTER EVENTS:
- July 12, Akron Aeros Game
- October, Cuyahoga Valley Scenic Railway departing Akron Station

HUMAN CARE MISSION FOR JUNE:
PERSONAL CARE ITEMS FOR HAVEN OF REST/HARVEST HOME
It’s not too soon to begin gathering personal care items for Haven of Rest /Harvest

This collection has become an annual event for FLCS for the month of June. There is al-
ways an increased need in summer for such items as bars of soap, body cleansers, sham-
poo and conditioner, toothbrushes and toothpaste, body lotion and deodorant. Look for
further details in the June Connections.

I see it every day. A person who has never felt the need for financial guidance walks through my
door right after a significant life event–maybe the birth of a child, a marriage or even an unex-
pected inheritance. Life events like these trigger the need to meet with your financial representa-
tive to ensure that your financial strategy is on track with your goals.
Marriage. About two-thirds of married people say they disagree with their spouse about
money. A good way to lessen the stress is to discuss your values, goals and needs with a financial
professional and make decisions together.
Birth or adoption of a child. Making room in your budget for the new addition is important.
It’s also important to evaluate your need for additional disability income and life insurance cov-
erage. Many new parents start looking at college funding
options as well.
Inheritance. Many people devote time and attention to what will happen if they die, but often
overlook the fact that they might receive a loved one’s legacy. A financial professional can help
you responsibly steward and invest the money in ways that align with your values, goals and
needs.
Retirement. Both financially preparing for retirement and appropriately tapping one’s financial
assets in retirement are key needs in our changing society.
