Hello and welcome to the spring edition of Inside Moreland.

As the weather warms up, plenty of families will be eager to start using their home swimming pools again. Turn to page 6 to learn about new pool legislation and how to stay safe around the water.

Council’s food and garden organics collection service is working well. Many residents are now adding food scraps to their green bins for Council to collect and have turned into compost. Read our top tips for food scraps on page 3.

Our Maternal and Child Health service has turned 100! Our caring nurses have helped thousands of families across Moreland over the years, including my own. Read about the history of the service in Moreland on page 4.

And finally, thank you to all in the community who help bring Council’s visions to life.

We are only able to deliver the lofty goals of our council plan with an active, committed community, and for your help, I am truly thankful.

Food and garden organics collectionOur food and garden organics collection service (formerly green waste service) now accepts food waste.

If you have an organics bin you can now place food scraps in this bin along with your garden waste.

Top tips for using your organics bin

• Place food scraps, including meat, dairy, citrus, seafood and bones, in your food and garden organics bin – it will be turned into compost!

• Wrap food waste in paper towel or newspaper, or put it straight into your kitchen caddy or food and garden

organics bin – don’t use compostable liners or plastic bags of any kind.

• Reduce smell by storing your meat and seafood scraps in the fridge or freezer until bin night, then place in your organics bin.

• Use a bench-top kitchen caddy or reuse a container from home to make it easy to collect your food waste before placing in your organics bin.

Join others in putting your food waste to good use – find out how to order a food and garden organics bin at no additional cost by calling Council on 9420 1111 or by visiting moreland.vic.gov.au

For the past century Maternal and Child Health (MCH) nurses have been there for Moreland families.

This year we recognise and commemorate a century of service delivery from our MCH nurses with a great big thank you, and opportunities to reflect, celebrate and share stories.

Victorian Maternal and Child Health Nurses are all registered nurses, registered midwives and all have a postgraduate qualification in MCH. This is not a requirement across Australia so Victoria is leading the way.

Maternal and Child Health Services are offered to all new families who give birth in Victoria. No matter who you are or whatever your circumstances, the MCH service is there for your new family.

Nurses offer expert advice on all aspects of parenting — from development and growth to breastfeeding and sleeping — and have earned a special place in the hearts of generations of families, from those in Glenroy to Gowanbrae, Brunswick to Fawkner.

“My nurse Amy has been a real support for me,’ Pascoe Vale resident Karen says. ‘Especially with my second son, the whole process wasn’t as easy as the first time around.”

Karen has lived in Moreland for nine years and her husband himself went through Moreland MCH services when he was a baby. They have two sons, four-year-old Max and eight-month-old Billy.

The MCH service has linked Karen with other services too. “My nurse here at Pascoe Vale recently referred me to a lactation consultant – a Council-provided service I didn’t know about,” Karen says. “It’s been so helpful.”

“I’ve also made really strong friendships through the MCH new parents group,” Karen continues. “It’s great to be able to throw things off each other when we’re having a bad day. Just to share a coffee, maybe two.”

Karen’s nurse, Amy, has been a Maternal and Child Health Nurse for eight years.

“Our role as Maternal and Child Nurses involves a lot more than weighing babies,” Amy laughs.

“We complete growth and development checks for babies – from birth up to four years. It’s our job to help you with breastfeeding, immunisation, nutrition and lots more.

We really work on building relationships in the community and making sure parents and babies are healthy.”

Based in the new Pascoe Vale Community Centre, Amy says that having the hub of services in a modern and bright building has been a big win for local families.

“Connecting families with other support services is also crucial and we assist new parents and carers to make social connections through our groups.”

The centenary celebrations will be taking place at Coburg Town Hall on Friday 15 November from 2.30 to 4.30pm.

“It’s pretty exciting that Moreland is celebrating 100 years of MCH this year,” Amy adds. “It really shows how important the service is to the community, that it’s thrived for this long.”

We’re committed to making sure that our communities and neighbourhoods are sustainable places that promote health and wellbeing, and trees play a big part in this vision.

Here’s a snapshot of the action we’re taking when it comes to increasing and protecting trees in Moreland.

Helping you find the right tree for your property To try and make it as easy as possible for you to find the most suitable tree species for your property, we’ve developed an online tree finder tool.

Simply key in details such as the size of the available space, and you’ll be provided with a list of tree species that will work.

View our tree finder tool online at moreland.vic.gov.au/tree-canopy

39 new trees – Cumming Street, BrunswickHave you driven down Cumming Street in Brunswick recently?

You might have noticed that we’ve recently made some upgrades to the streetscape.

We’ve planted 39 (yes, 39!) new canopy trees as part of recent road reconstructions.

This wide street has powerlines on both sides of the street, which limits space for trees, so the middle of the road was a perfect place for some new canopy to provide summer cooling and habitat for local wildlife.

We’re hoping to incorporate more of these designs in our streets in the future.

WEED MANAGEMENT UPDATEWe’ll be expanding our use of chemical-free and more sustainable alternatives for weed management over the safe levels of glyphosate we have been using in-line with State Government guidelines historically. Having undertaken trials of environmentally sustainable alternatives, we understand a transition is not easy, but have committed to phasing out our use of glyphosate (more commonly known as Roundup) across Moreland by August 2021.

For more information see moreland.vic.gov.au or call 9240 1111

Did you know that in 2016 Moreland’s tree canopy coverage was 14% and declining?

Moreland Planning Officers and our Open Space Arborist recently supervised works and completion of a Brunswick West residential development, making sure this giant Kurrajong tree was saved.

The State Government is introducing new pool and spa regulations (expected from 1 December 2019), requiring all owners to register their pools and spas.

This aims to prevent young children drowning in private swimming pools – the greatest cause of accidental death for kids under five in Australia.

Pool owners will need to register that they have a pool or spa, and then lodge certificates of pool fencing compliance with Council at a future date.

New penalties will apply for both failing to register a pool and failing to submit a pool fence-inspection report.

We will work with the Victorian Building Authority to assist residents with information on how to comply with these important new safety requirements.

Keep an eye out too: we’ll be sharing more information once details on the

changes are finalised by the State Government.

More information on this and householder obligations (including important information on maintenance) can be found at vba.vic.gov.au/consumers/swimming-pools

Pool safety – new regulations comingAll swimming pools and spas across Moreland – indoor, outdoor, in-ground or above-ground – must have compliant safety fencing and gates. This also includes inflatable pools deeper than 30cm.

Coburg Town Hall – 90 Bell Street, Coburg

Morelanders can look forward to a bright and shiny Christmas at Moreland’s three major activity centres: Brunswick, Coburg and Glenroy.

Council’s Christmas decorations will receive a makeover this festive season as part of Council’s five-year ‘Christmas and other Celebrations Program’.

Council has accelerated the purchase of Christmas decorations in 2019-20, which will see more new festive decorations added to existing stock, with a focus on improving decorations in Glenroy. The five-year program will continue through to 2021-22.
