On the Cover... Next Generation Porsche Owner?Armando Gutierrez and his son Ryan (8 years old) came to the December 2 Breakfast Club with their newly finished 1976 911 that has been converted to a 930 Slantnose. They've owned the car for about a year, and went through it top to bottom. A car to be proud of.

Are the holidays really over? I'm just catching my breath over here. We've been really busy working on events for 2007. We've got two Day Away from Work Autocrosses sched-uled: April 16 and October 8 (see ad on page 7).

Another event coming up is the Concours Judging School on March 3. If you are interested in finding out more about concouring in general, this might be the place for you (see flyer on page 11).

At the end of March is the Zone 8 Speed Festival at Cali-fornia Speedway (through April 1). Grand Prix Region has been heavily involved in this event for several years. It's a GREAT place to see Porsches doing everything from racing to autocrossing to concouring. The Track Tours at lunch break gives non-competitors an opportunity to actually drive on the track (at parade lap speed, of course). Porsche not required, and you can bring your kids.

GPX has about 20 members volunteering time at this event. It's loads of fun and you get to see some of the "behind the scenes" activity that goes into producing a racing event like this. If you are interested in more information or helping us out, please contact me ASAP ([email protected]).

We have a new advertisers starting this month — Performance Products. Actually, Performance is a long time supporter of GPX and has advertised with us in the past. The website is PerformanceProducts.com. Take a look. You'll be impressed with the variety of products available.

I also want to mention Fotoart (Fotoart.com). Stephen Krupnick did a great job producing the awards for our Holi-day Party last month. Fotoart has been working with GPX for several years and it's always a pleasure dealing with them. They also donated a Porsche Carpet for the Silent Auction. Check out their website for the carpet and an unbelievable selection of items.

Last but not least, the 24th Annual L.A. Literature, Toy Show and Memorabilia Meet for Porsche and Vintage VW (that's a mouthful) is at the L.A. Airport Hilton again on March 10. This is a fabu-lous event. You really need to check it out (see ad on page 6).

Until next month, take care and... Breakfast Club this Sat-urday at Ricky & Ronnies

25 YEARS — On December 2nd, Grand Prix Region celebrated the culmination of our 25th year as a region of the Porsche Club of America. McKenna's on the Bay at the Long Beach Marina played host to fifty of us. Besides the normal festivities, we were honored to have our Zone 8 Rep, Bev Giffin-Frohm, present. And, our silent auction raised about $2500 for Cure Diabetes Now. Our friends from Das Schild were also at the party, and donated a $200.00 gift certificate to our auction. The certificate can be used for their new line of car care products about to be announced.

The food and service at McKenna's was great. The room was warm and comfortable with great views of the water and boats with Christmas lights.

Circle Porsche donated one of the original Porsche factory post-ers ('86 Le Mans) that has been hanging in their showroom for decades. With the flurry of activity at my announcement "One Minute Left Before We Close the Auction", someone accidently knocked over the poster, which crashed on new member Giles Hurley. The loud crash of shattering glass scared the xyhgt out of me (think what it did to Giles). Fortunately, neither Giles NOR the poster were hurt. As you can see from the photo, Giles was given "special consideration" with our door prizes, receiving the "Hard Head" award for the evening.

We have a long list of sponsors to thank: Reggie and Henrietta Akpaka, Steve & Cathy Koch, Bill & Sheila Burris, Connie & Don Anderson, Linda Cobarrubias, Norma Dawson, Karen Wall Garrison, Stephen Krupnick & Fotoart, Robert Friedman, Barbara Gillam, Jeff Haas & Haas Entertainment, Patricia Greary Johnson, Jeff McConnell & Wolfgang Puck, Marty Noonan, Pelican Parts, Steve Foster and Caprise Rasmussen.

Two other annual awards were presented. Peter Ross, for the second time, received our Enthusiast of the Year trophy. I think he and De Jur Jones are just exchanging this trophy every other year. Besides doing an out-standing job as our membership chair, Pete is a major contributor to The Circuit, our Breakfast Club and our driving program (He also manages to get GREAT cakes for us — see photo on left).

Our Competition Award went to Doc Pryor. For someone who has as busy a schedule as anyone I know, Doc manages to attend AND compete in a tremendous number of club events. In addition, Doc co-chairs the Zone 8 Concours chair with wife Linda, and is very involved in the GPX driving program and concours.

Michael Dolphin was honored for serving four years as GPX president (2001-2004) and five years for heading up our driving program.

Presenting earlier that day at our Breakfast Club, Ron Shanon was acknowledged for serving as our Activities Director for the last 4 years.

Anyway, it was a great evening spent amongst good friends. What more could you ask for?

On Saturday, December 9th, the Grand Prix Region joined POC (Porsche Owner’s Club), Rennlist, Terry Wells of PCNA, Pacific Porsche, Steve Alarcon of John-son’s Alignment, John Brown with Wheel Enhancement, Wayne Dempsey with Pelican Parts, and a host of others at a tech session specifically concentrating on the Porsche 993 hosted by Tony Callas of Callas Rennsport in Tor-rance. As an extra bonus, Lennie Yee of Pacific Porsche gave away $1000 worth of door prizes.

When you talk about the classic Porsche 911 design, the 993 was the last air cooled, horizontally opposed, six cylinder, rear engine car. It was produced between 1995 and 1998, being replaced in 1999 by the first water cooled 911, the 996 model. The parking lot was filled with almost every type of 993 including Cabs, Targas, Coupes, Carrera S and Turbos. There were a few Boxsters, a Cayman, and some older mod-els thrown into the mix. With such a variety of participants, the attendance was quite impressive. Even so, Tony still didn’t feel the need to use a microphone.

Besides all the impressive vehicles in the parking lot, a 959 and the shell of a racing 993 were on display. The 959 was described as not being “pure” with a few parts not specific to that model. The engine for the 993 racer was on a stand in the shop for all to see. Also on display was a Boxster prepped for weekend racing. We literally had a car show in addition to a tech session.

To kick off the tech session, Tony asked for a couple of volunteers to allow their 993s to be placed on lifts to serve as subjects for the presentations. Tony let the owners know that he would likely be pointing out some imperfections and/or recommendations during the session. Even so, a couple of

volunteers stepped forward and we soon had two 993s on the lifts. Tony was amazed on how clean the 1995 red coupe was and asked if it was a concours car. Tony passed out a sheet that served as a check list for maintenance as well as typi-cal issues related to the 993. Starting with the basics, Tony talked about types of oil, oil changes, fuel, and other fluids. He would occasionally mention some of the typical items that are checked and/or serviced when a 993 is brought to the shop. Tony also mentioned the more typical problems that might show up and how to avoid or minimize them. Tony also explained some of his techniques for troubleshoot-ing problems.

On the subject of tires, suspension, and other chassis re-lated items, Steve Alarcon (Johnson’s Alignment) shared his knowledge with the group. He talked about the importance of analyzing tire wear and proper tire pressure. There was plenty of opportunity for questions and answers during the session. All in all, it was a very informative morning.

As in the past, Tony conducted another successful event and we look forward to more. As a matter of fact, because of some inquiries made in 2006, we are planning a session especially for the classic 356. There are a lot of these cars still on the road, and Tony is looking forward to this next meet-ing. Check the calendar. We'll probably have it in April.

Breakfast Club Meeting Update — Dec 2by Skip Carter, photos by Pete Ross

John Baskett

Armando Gutierrez and his son, Ryan

Armando Gutierrez's Slant Nose Rod Williams

Cindy & Eric & Rick Becker

Our December 2 Breakfast Club had a nice turnout of new and old members, as well as a couple of "about to joins." It was very nice to see Rick and Cindy Becker and their son, Eric. The Becker's just had their 10th anniversary as PCA members. John Baskett stopped by in between his daughter's soccer games. John just had his 4th anniversary.

Probably the most unusual car this morning was Armando Gutierrez's Slant Nose 911.

Rod WIlliams has stopped by a couple of months now and is just joining the club. To say that his 911 C2 is "drop dead gorgeous" would not be an overstatement.

Ron Shanon was presented with an award for serving as the club Activities Director for the past three years. Ron will continue serving as our Insurance and Tech Session Chairs. Barbara GillamhassteppeduptofilltheActivitiesDirectorrole.Thanksto both for their hard work.

A lot of our "regulars" were not in attendance, but we saw them later that evening at the Holiday Party. Norma Dawson did her usual great job overseeing the meeting and collecting the money. It's hard to beat this "all you can eat" buffet, hang out with some nice people and kick tires in the parking lot.

Not a bad way to spend a nice Saturday morning.
