Out of This WorldAn addendum to this issue’s Polish coverage, “The Silent Partner” is a striking photographic essay depicting the beauty and resilience of Poland’s tireless workhorses. The June 1985 spread is artistically photographed in black-and-white by the late Marian Gadzalski.

We are doing our part.
Everyone is painfully aware of the rising cost
of enjoying our wonderful Arabian horses,
resulting in fewer of them being born. At
Dakar Kartel, we believe it’s time to reduce the cost,
starting with the breeding fees.
Beginning October 15, 2011 through April 30,
2012, breeding rights to *Dakar El Jamaal and his
sons, Mazkarade and Dakars Eagle Eyes, will be
offered at $1,750 each. All breeding rights must
be activated by October 15, 2014, to be valid. The
standard Dakar Kartel breeding agreement will be
in effect for these special prices.

ur featured amateur this year is Herb Meites.
Showing horses has long been a family affair for the
Meites family. For more than three decades, Herb and Karen
Meites — and later their daughter Tiffany — have competed
with Arabians and Half-Arabians in both the halter and
performance arenas and focus on producing halter-quality
performance horses in their small breeding program. When the
time came to determine the next step for two of their young
geldings with halter potential, they decided to send them to
Kim Morgan. Not only did both horses have a lot to learn,
but Herb (the family member most interested in showing
halter) did too. Although he had previously shown a mare to a
National Championship at National Show Horse Finals, there
were a number of details to perfect.
2011 Canadian National Champion Chick Magnet+ (Baske Afire x Ring Girl), pictured with, from left KMA trainer Tony Steiner, Herb Meites, Karen Meites, Tiffany Meites, and Kim Morgan.
A halter performance has many aspects, each of which must
be perfected to achieve harmony between handler and horse.
Commuting three and a half hours one way to the farm, Herb
took lessons with Kim, learning the nuances of presenting the
best angles of his horse. At U.S. Nationals that year, one of the
geldings, WS Winchester, won a National Top Ten in the Half-
Arabian Futurity. Ultimately both geldings won several regional
and national halter titles, including a Region 9 Championship
and a National Top Ten for Herb.

ur featured amateur this year is Herb Meites. Shortly after the Meiteses’ fi rst Nationals with Kim, she
showed Herb a bay Half-Arabian yearling gelding that she felt
had potential as both a halter and a performance horse. Chick
Magnet (Bask Afi re x Ring Girl) was purchased at Scottsdale
in 2009 shortly before winning a Scottsdale Championship in
Half-Arabian halter. Lightly shown in his yearling and two-
year-old years, “Chick” won an additional Scottsdale Reserve
Championship, Regional Championship, and U.S. National
Top Ten. After some discussion about the best shows for
Chick, the Meiteses decided to take him to the 2011 Canadian
Nationals. The fi rst class of the fi rst day of the show, Chick and
Herb made their national debut together, with Herb expertly
guiding Chick through his paces to a Canadian National
Championship in Half-Arabian Saddle Pleasure Geldings
AAOTH. Kim and Chick had an equally successful show, with a
national championship in the Open class and Reserve National
Championship in the futurity. Together Kim, trainer Tony
Steiner, and the Meites family are looking forward to the next
step, competing at U.S. Nationals.
With horses a key part of his life, Herb also serves as the
Oklahoma state delegate to AHA. Additionally, Herb is a general
surgeon and is the medical director of the primary adult burn
unit in Oklahoma.
Another shout-out goes to amateur Sharon Redman, who
won our 2011 Hoof Camp
competition with SA Romeo
Bay. Romeo is a yearling and
is from the fi rst foal crop by
the successful young stallion
WC Ali Gazal owned by
Western Cross Arabians.
Sharon grew up riding ranch
horses and working cattle in
Oklahoma.

KMA trainer Tony Steiner, wife Cindy, and children Scott and Katie.
“I now reside in Weatherford, Texas, with my husband,
Craig Parks, and our daughter, Audrey,” she says. “I acquired
my fi rst Arabian in 2003 and started showing with Audrey. My
fi rst foal, Bajoo Baloo Moon, was born in 2006. I established
my breeding program in 2009. SA Romeo Bay, whom I bred,
was Reserve Champion at the Texas State Fair Horse Show the
week following KMA Hoof Camp. The Hoof Camp was a great experience and one that has defi nitely helped me progress as an amateur handler.”
“Sharon is a capable horsewoman in her own right,” says trainer Tony Steiner. “Watching her grow as a showman was a great blessing for us here at KMA.”
Our StaffIn addition to great clients, we have been very blessed to
have a great staff at KMA. Jose Rodriguez is the ranch foreman and is a very gifted man. His attention to detail with the horses and the property is huge. As much as we travel having this type of employee is invaluable. Jose and his wife, Alejandra, have two children, Anthony and Keylie.

A new addition to our staff is Tony Steiner. “I pulled Tony out of the tundra in Minnesota this winter to help me with Scottsdale and immediately it was apparent he had to come on board permanently,” says Kim. “Aside from having a great show, we determined we worked great together and shared the love of horses and our faith.” Much like Kim, Tony has spent a lifetime in the horse industry. His youth was spent working and training horses for his parents in Minnesota. After graduating
from high school and getting a business degree, he owned and operated his own training facility for nearly 20 years. Tony has promoted stallions and developed many show horses and amateurs himself so he brings a great dynamic to KMA. His training has been defi ned as quiet, fair and non-abusive, with an eye on the horse’s long-term future. He is very gifted with his ability to teach amateurs as well. Tony has had much success in the Regional, National, and Scottsdale arenas. “Tony is also a gentleman and a joy to work with,” says Kim. Tony and his wife Cindy have two children, Scott and Katie. “We are very excited about the future at KMA!”
Kim Morgan Arabians, owned by Kim Morgan and her husband Dr. Jim Morgan, is located in Pilot Point, North Texas. The farm is nestled in “Horse Country, USA.” “We are surrounded by horses from all walks of life and we love it!” says Kim. Dr. Morgan is a Hall of Fame Non-Pro NRHA Competitor and a large animal veterinarian. Kim was raised with Arabian horses, showing her fi rst time at Nationals at age 14. She has accumulated a multitude of National honors over her career including: Junior Champion Arabian Tevkah at Scottsdale in 1990, Good As It Gets, National Champion Half-Arabian Gelding Yearling and Futurity 1999-2000, and Canadian National Champion Mare and U.S. National Reserve Champion Amateur TAF Pritza (1996). “The group of horses we are bringing to Tulsa this year are all spectacular — it’s so exciting!” says Kim. “I consider myself so very blessed to be able to work with these horses and their owners.”

* B a s k
by Mary Jane Parkinson
A H W ’ SA H W ’ S
As the U.S. Nationals show approaches, we often fondly remember
Nationals past. Weeks when we watched one *Bask son or daughter
after another make a triumphal victory pass. Days when *Bask
progeny won the larger share of the Top Tens in a finals class. Years when
*Bask was the leading sire of National winners. Days when breeders went
home determined to somehow book a mare to *Bask and daydreamed of their
own future victory passes.
To what extent did *Bask dominate the Nationals winners circles of the
1960s and onward? Thanks to two data systems — that of Arabian Horse
World and that of the Registry’s datasource — a ream-plus of printing paper,
and a speedy calculator, we got the clues.
*Bask is one of only seven sires in the United States that have posted
lifetime totals of foals in the four-digits category. He’s at 1,050 and in fifth
place in that elite group. So there is a solid base from which to develop
National winners. Of those 1,050 offspring, 190 of them have National wins
— giving him a score of 18.2 percent National winners. Has any other sire
ever challenged this percentage?
The National winners tallied 493 titles. The wins are top-heavy in
performance — from working cow to English pleasure. In performance finals,
*Bask sons and daughters have brought in 82 National championships, 77
Reserves, and 227 Top Tens. In halter — where the opportunities are fewer
— they have 15 National championships, 15 Reserves, and 77 Top Tens.
The most cherished are those with National championships in both
halter and performance. Here, *Bask has two: his daughter Fire Music
(x Susecion), United States National Champion Mare and United States
National Champion English Pleasure, with duplicate titles in the Canadian
Nationals; and his daughter Mi Toska (x Toi), Canadian National Champion
Mare and U.S. National Champion Pleasure Driving. Mi Toska also has the
highest number of Nationals titles, 14, of any *Bask progeny.
*Bask died in July 1979, within hours of his daughter Ambra going
Canadian National Champion Park. (She also went U.S. National Champion
Park that same year.) *Bask is buried in a place of honor: the Kentucky Horse
Park in Lexington, Kentucky, and his life-size sculpture (by Ed Bogucki) is at
the entrance to the International Museum of the Horse in the park.
Many years have passed and many Nationals come and gone. But the
late Dr. Eugene LaCroix, *Bask’s importer, never forgot the thrill (in 1962)
as he watched transfixed when *Bask danced out of the stallion barn at
Janow Podlaski Stud in Poland. We remember Dr. LaCroix’s recollection of
the moment: “He just hit me like a ton of bricks!” Many still hear bricks
falling as *Bask descendants of successive generations make their Nationals
victory passes.
