Letter from the District Governor

My Fellow Rotarians…

I can’t believe that we are already beginning the fourth

month of our fiscal year. I have visited almost all of the clubs

in our district except for a few that had to be rescheduled for

various reasons.

What has amazed me the most is just how many truly

dedicated members we have throughout the district.

We are blessed with a plethora of knowledgeable and enthusiastic Rotari-

ans who are willing to lend a hand to just about any worthy cause. Until you

see them on a club-to-club basis, it’s easy to take them for granted. They’re

there, quietly and steadily doing the great work that Rotary has become

known for. Without fanfare, without acknowledgements, knowing only the in-

ternal satisfaction that community service gives us, our members give back to

our world in ways we may never fully appreciate.

Make a point in visiting as many clubs in our district as you can. While our

club meetings can be enjoyable, try to visit each club’s fundraisers. This past

month we had several events that were highly successful in the district. Dallas

and North Pocono each had Golf Tournaments. Members from the Honesdale

and Hawley helped out. Mountain Top put on a Steam Train Excursion. Ham-

Thorpe led people through town on their annual

“Ghostwalk”. Blakelee put on a “Night at the

Races”. The Abington club put on their annual

“Taste of the Abingtons.” This coming weekend

the Tunkhannock club will be having their an-

nual Wine Festival. This is the biggest fund

raiser in the district. All members should try to

see how to put on such an event.

Thank you one and all for the great work you

are doing.

Thank you for being Rotarians

DISTRICT GOVERNOR…

CONTINUED FROM FRONT. District Governor Nominations

Open Oct. 1, End on Nov. 30

Dear Presidents and Secretaries of the Clubs of District 7410:

It is time again to start the nomination process and selection

of the next District Governor Nominee to serve as Governor in

2021-2022. Nominations open October 1, 2018 and Close on

November 30, 2018.

This critical Leadership role for the district is our leadership

link to RI and serves as our key officer for the Rotary year. The

one outstanding critical criteria is that the individual must be a

past President of a Rotary Club. Attached find the application

form for those who might be interested in putting his/her hat in

the ring.

Note: An individual nominee has to have the sign-off and sup-

port from his/her club and be a member in good standing. the

Nominating committee will interview all candidates and select the

best one they feel can perform the Leadership role. This year the

Committee is made up of myself, as chair, and Tom Visgilio and

Melanie Tek as PDGs and members from the following Clubs:

Wellsboro

Tunkhannock

Milford-Matamoras

Mount Pocono

North Pocono

Weatherly

Wilkes Barre

Anyone with questions can reach me by email or by text or

mobile call.

Note also that we are seeking (1) 2 year nominee for the Dis-

trict Finance Committee and (1) 3 year nominee for the District

Finance Committee at the same time as we are seeking the

DGN. This process is less formal, but anyone who would like to

serve should also contact me and put forward a letter requesting

consideration. There is no formal application form... but a Club

reference as a member in good standing would be necessary.

Best regards,

Marcia Loughman, PDG, Nominating Committee Chair

Didn’t mean to scare you, but

due to technical difficulties this

newsletter is a little late.

Plains Rotary Host Students

The Plains Rotary at a recent meeting hosted Morgan Gayton and Leah Natt. The

Plains Rotary sponsored the two young ladies at the 2018 Rotary Youth Leadership

Awards (RYLA) program offered by Rotary District 7410 to students in the ten coun-

ties covered by the district. The event was held at Keystone College in June. The

RYLA program is a five-day event for high school students between their sophomore

and junior year. RYLA is designed to provide the participants with leadership skills

Rotarians Join Coalition to Oust Opioids Recently, Tunkhannock Rotary

joined Wyoming County Coalition

HOPE, which is a consortium of

community and health organiza-

tions that are trying to ameliorate

the opioid epidemic in Wyoming

County.

For many years, Tunkhannock

Rotary has been providing commu-

nity outreach for the semi-annual

Wyoming County District Attorney’s

Drug Take Back events, which has

taken over a ton of drugs out of peo-

ple’s medicine cabinets. The Club

has also recently begun community

outreach for the District Attorney’s

permanent drug drop box program

by distributing posters and rack card

that highlight the locations and drop

off times at 3 sites in Wyoming

County where people can drop off

their expired or unneeded drugs be-

tween the semi-annual Drug Take

Back events. The next Wyoming

County District Attorney’s Drug Take

Back event is Saturday Oct 27.

As part of Coalition HOPE, the

Tunkhannock Rotary will be able to

expand its community outreach pro-

grams to highlight the need to control

prescription drugs and allow the club

to participate in new community out-

reach endeavors that will be part of

Coalition HOPE.

Another Successful

This year marks the 8th anniver-

sary District 7410 hosted RYLA at

Keystone College in LaPlume, PA.

The first year’s new RYLA

hosted 37 students from around

the district. This year, 73 young

leaders gathered to participate in

active learning to better them-

selves and their communities.

RYLA 2018 (Rotary Youth Lead-

ership Awards) was held the week

of June 17th – 21st and was led by

Executive Chairs Karen DeMatteo,

Amy Leiser, and Leila Bouchekouk,

all of the Rotary Club of the

Stroudsburgs. Together, Karen,

Amy, and Leila oversaw 20 staffers

in addition to the RYLA conferees.

The 5-day conference featured

days packed with activities. From

breakfast at 7:45 am each morning

to lights out at 11:00 pm, the con-

ferees and staff stayed busy.

Throughout the week, RYLA con-

ferees learned about Rotary and

how to embrace the 4-way test,

worked on group assignments, par-

ticipated in Rise Against Hunger

food packaging service project,

and listened to motivational speak-

ers. Ice-breakers were ran by the

staff to get conferees out of their

comfort zones, and numerous ac-

tivities taught the participants how

to respect other’s opinions, to work

in teams, and to develop their own

confidence and self-worth. Even

the talent show was a milestone for

some who had never performed in

front of a crowd before! Interest-

ingly, all of the activities were fun

and the participants might not have

realized at the time that they were

learning leadership skills until after

the conference was over and they

too time to reflect back on their ex-

perience at RYLA.

Never in the same group of peo-

ple, the conferees were strategi-

cally divided up with each activity

to ensure everyone met someone

new each day. Friendships were

formed, lessons were learned, and

pride in oneself was developed.

As always, thank you to all of

the members of District 7410 for

supporting this important experi-

ence for northeastern and central

Pennsylvania area youth. The

dedication of promoting positive

attitudes and providing an opportu-

nity for these teenagers to flourish

and to unlock their leadership po-

tential is commendable.

A special thank you to our spon-

sors! Your support allows us to

maintain the high-quality program-

ming at RYLA!
