Chemical Controls- Ornamental/Edible

Things To Keep In Mind

Read and follow everything on the pesticide

labels

Caution- Labels change!

Products other than those mentioned may

be safe and effective

Newer Insecticides/Miticides

Pradia from OHP

SC (water-based formulation) applied only

as a foliar spray with contact and ingestion

activity

MOA 28 & 29 (Cyclaniliprole and flonicamid)

Ornamentals only in greenhouses and

nurseries

Key pests include: aphids, beetles,

caterpillars, leafminers, mealybugs, plant

bugs, thrips, whiteflies

Pradia from OHP

Most pests, 1-2 weeks of control

Good BCA and pollinator safety- EPA says short residual toxicity to bees

Fogging is permitted

Excellent plant and bloom safety (No pansy or viola)

12 hr REI

Ventigra from BASF

MOA 9D- Afidopyropen, no known cross resistance

(Endeavor, Rycar 9B)

Foliar spray for the control of aphids, mealybugs,

scale and whiteflies

Labeled sites include ornamentals in greenhouses,

landscapes, nurseries and vegetable transplants in

greenhouses (sup label, certain edibles grown to

harvest)

Ventigra

Feeding stops soon after treatment, death by

starvation and dehydration

Translaminar and acropetal movement, contact

and ingestion activity

Residual length of control ~ 21 days

Good bee safety and compatible with many BCAs

Blast From the Past

XXPire has returned to the market after removal in

2016

Two a.i. foliar insecticide MOA 4C- Sulfoxaflor and

MOA 5 Spinetoram

Translaminar systemic

Labeled for aphids, beetles, caterpillars, plant bugs,

whiteflies, worms

Thrips? Spinetoram similar to Conserve

Ornamentals only

Pest Specific Recommendations

Aphids – Above and Below Ground

Root Aphids on Rudbeckia

Aphid Damage

Wide host range

Sucking insects

Feed on every plant part including roots

and bulbs

Cause deformed foliage

Vector many plant viruses

Secrete “honeydew”

Aphid Biology

Give birth to live young, all females

Reproduction increases as temps increase

Aphids can give birth to 60-100 young over a 20-day period (depending on host plants and nutritional status)

Winged stage produced when populations are high to aid in dispersal

Successful Nematode Applications

Ensure adequate soil moisture-

required for movement

No tank mixing in the stock bucket-

even those listed as compatible

U.V. light destroys nematodes- cloudy

day, late in the day

Use cool water, (ice pack if needed),

gentle agitation and aeration

Remove screens finer than 50 mesh

crops, hanging baskets right before they get

hung up:

Phytoselius persimilis and Spider Mites

Spider Mite Egg

Spider Mites- Resistance Management

Resistance especially intense for southern

U.S locations

Very effective BCAs exist- challenge is toxic

residues from miticides previously applied

Hort oils and microbials (Ancora, Grandevo

CG, Velifer) before the transition to BCAs.

GGSPro can help with compatible pesticides

BCAs for Spider Mite Control

“Curative”- Phytoseiulus persimilis consumes all life stages including eggs

“Preventative”- Amblyseius species effective if present in sufficient quantities

1. A. andersoni- best choice for cool temps

2. A. californicus- hot weather and low humidity

3. A. cucumeris- moderate temps, thrips also

4. A. swirskii- higher temps, thrips and whitefly eggs

Spider Mite Scouting/Control Tips

Low humidity and good air movement favor spider mite development

Vent and door openings favorite spots

Scout and place trap crops here

Misting systems can be used to increase humidity

Higher humidity favors predatory mites vs. spider mites

Broad Mites and Cyclamen Mites

Broad mites inject toxin, cause stunted and

distorted foliage

Growing tips attacked

Microscopic size helps them avoid detection

Found in protected places

Symptoms can vary greatly on different

species of plants

Biocontrol of Broad and Cyclamen mites- Amblyseius

cucumeris, Amblyseius swirskii, Amblyseius californicus

and Amblyseius andersoni all will feed on broad mites.

High BCA rates provide good preventative control, not

likely to clean up existing problem.

Mealybugs Attack Above and Below

Mealybugs on Dipladenia Root Mealybugs on Scented Geranium

Page 9: Insect and Mite Control 2021 - Cloudinary

9

Mealybug Biology

Life cycle can last 60 days

Adult female mealybugs lay up to 600 eggs under their bodies

May live 2-3 week off plant/ hard surfaces

Systemic drenches = poor efficacy, 3 foliar applications 1 week apart*

Some inject toxins during feeding

* Based on research shared at FRA 2018- Dr. Raymond
