Enhancing Skill Development Through Learning Aids

India’s Current Skill Development Initiatives Faces a Number of Challenges

§ 350  Million  people  need  to  be  provided  with  skills  that  would  give  them  employment

§ Demand  for  skills    is  con=nuously  changing  in  eco-‐system

§ Current  Training  Programs    have  focused  on  content  and  assessments.

§ We  follow  a  one-‐size  fits  all  approach.

§ Training  programs  effec=veness  is  significantly  constrained  by  ability  of  learners  to  comprehend  and  internalize.

§ Not  All  Learners  are  the  same.

India’s Current Skill Development Initiatives Faces a Number of Challenges

It is found that visual presentation through the use of pictures was advantageous for all adults, irrespective of a high or low IQ levels

Experiential learning is the process of making meaning from direct experience. This triggers the learners into questioning:

Human learn through the three main sensory

receivers: Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic(movement)

Learners use all three modalities to receive and

learn new information and experiences.

Did you notice...? Why did that happen?

Does that happen in life? Why does that happen? How can you use that?

Page 5: Innovation Proposal Labournet

The current training methods and tools are inadequate

Heavy Dependency on Skill Of Trainer

Training Aids are restricted to course books and flip charts

Restricted Budgets for training limit ability to use

video and other tools

Poor Infrastructure makes it hard to effectively use

technology

Focus of Aids is not on helping internalize

concepts

Not All Training Infrastructure is

Uniformly equipped

Challenges  with  Current  Training

Pedagogy

Since the majority of people have a low educational level. We felt a need to develop learning aids, that would facilitate easy understanding of the skill. Integrating Visual & Experiential learning to develop aids, that could be used to teach people. As a pilot project we developed aids that could be used to teach people the basic principles related to shutter carpentry. The kit was developed after researching and understanding the problems faced by trainers as well as students across India The kit is being designed and developed by a team of designers who are also educators, considering the cognitive and behavioural psychology of a learner

Page 6: Innovation Proposal Labournet

We have invested R&D efforts to create a kit that enables experiential learning

•  Effective learning without dependency on literacy / schooling •  Learning from an authorized body is more reliable so getting a

labor who is trained in such a way is advantageous too •  It is more scientific than informal training that happens on

location •  Learning from peer and sharing with peers is important in a

learning environment •  Group activity gains more motivation than training alone •  Exposure to correct techniques, conducive learning and thinking

environment •  Increased confidence level •  Experiential & visual learning •  Learning by playing is very effective. Here the puzzles help in

memorizing the facts in a very curious and engaging way. Similarly the scaled down working models which the candidates can work with helps them understand concepts and even nuances in a very easy way. It allows them to commit mistakes which is very important in learning .

We believe we can scale up our R&D efforts and create a sustainable venture for building out learning aids

R&D PROCESS

TYPES OF LEARNING

AIDS

SCALE UP

R&D Types of Aids Scale Up

§  Our  R&D  process  includes  the  following  steps:  •  Understanding  Course  Requirements

and  Modules  •  Designing  Aids  based  Module

requirements  •  Pilot  the  Aids  in  filed  and  prove  proof

of  concept  •  Iterate  on  design  and  finalize  design

post  feedback

§  We  intend  to  set  up  a  Micro  Enterprise  in  Coimbatore

§  The  Micro  Enterprise  will  be  established  with  the  sole  aim  of  manufacturing  of  learning  aids

§  This  enterprise  will  employee  people  trained  from  our  livelihood  center

§  Our  Learnings  Aids  will  include  the  following:  •  Miniatures  of  tools  and  objects  •  Puzzles  •  Games  •  Learning  Cards  •  Quizzes

Our Proposed Plan •  Our current pilot project is for shuttering carpentry. We have on boarded a team of designers and intend to design kits for all our

other 60 courses. •  The kits will be built by micro-enterprise we intend to set up in Coimbatore. This enterprise will also give an opportunity to employ

skilled manpower from our livelihood centers.

Market Need Beyond LabourNet •  There are no such learning aids available in the skill development eco-system today. •  NIMI and other agencies only offer course books and course guides •  There is an opportunity for this enterprise to be sustainable because of the demand in the market

Page 8: Innovation Proposal Labournet

We need support to help develop more such aids and scale it out

Our Asks

•  The basic machineries required would be machines that could be used with materials such as wood, metal, plastic etc

•  Some of the machines would be Drilling machine, Lathe machine, Hand injection moulding, etc

•  We would require approximately 5000sqft of space to setup the machineries.

•  Skilled manpower could be trained to help in the development of these kits. •  Women can also be employed. •  The total investment required would be around 100 lakhs for land and

infrastructure development. •  The present kit cost around Rs.12,000 which includes the production,

material & labour cost. •  If we manufacture the kits in bulk using machineries we can bring down the

cost of manufacture. Our Requirement

•  INR 100,00,000/- To Set Up a Sustainable Micro-Enterprise in Coimbatore to Manufacture Kits •  Marketing and Branding Support to Promote the Kits
