Introduction to Printing on Décor

As more and more signage is becoming LED and LCD, print shops have to adapt and look for innovative applications so their inkjet printers can still produce a profit. Printing on glass, on ceramics, on specialized flooring material are three areas but these markets are often covered by single-pass printers which cost over a million dollars. So a family business or a mom-and-pop print shop can better survive by looking for printing on materials that don’t prefer specialized inks or specialized primers. Printing wall murals, wall paper, wall decoration is one popular new application during recent years. Printing on doors is not as well known, so we introduce this aspect of the potential to create new applications for your printer that you already have.


What is Décor?

Decor is decoration, especially doors, floors, walls, windows. Curtains, bed spreads, rugs can also be considered décor but in the world of wide-format inkjet printing décor is usually what is printable with UV-curing or comparable inks.

Decor can be in a business, or a home.


Transform a plain piece of material into a decor door

There are hundreds of different kinds of material that a UV-curing printer can print on. Thick rigid material is one of them.


Here are four panels transformed into doors of style and status.

The team at this printing company did a test print for us. Since we had to visit many different print shops the same day, they kindly did a miniature door (since to do a full-sized door would have taken more time).

Be sure to learn whether the material on which you wish to print requires a pre-treatment. Not many need post-treatment nowadays.

Ink settings are useful to learn (how much of each color of ink to use) and a professional color management spectrophotometer such as Barbieri is helpful.

It is important that the ink


you use is manufactured by a company that produces an ink that does not fade in a few months.

These images look 3-dimensional but they are simply cleverly rendered designs.

You too can expand your business and produce décor.

A key ingredient to success is having innovative graphic designers to produce images that draw attention.

Some print shops also offer design services to clients.

Other printing companies only print when a client brings a finished image.

Rather obviously you will earn more profit if your team can produce designs and also do the printing.
