FOREWORD

My dear Confreres,

I am happy to present to the communities and confreres of the Province the Action Plans of

the Provincial Commissions for the Year 2012-13.

Continuing the steps taken during the previous years to improve further the functioning of the

Provincial Commissions, the members of all the commissions met at the Provincial House on

10 April 2012 to evaluate the Action Plans of 2011-12 and formulate plans for 2012-13. In

the General Assembly on 11 April, the Co-ordinators of all the commissions, in the presence

of Fr. Provincial, the Provincial Councillors, and the members of all the commissions,

presented their evaluation of 2011-12 and the Actions Plans for 2012-13. The gathering

expressed satisfaction with regard to the entire process of the formulation, the execution and

the evaluation of the Action Plans. Insightful interventions from the members helped to

enrich the contents. Having participated at the local community level in the process of

Rethinking Salesian Youth Ministry, initiated by the Rector Major through the Department of

Youth Ministry (Rome), the members of the commissions continued to seek ways and means

to realise better the Salesian Educative Pastoral Project (SEPP). The Action Plans, approved

by the Provincial Council in its session on 17 – 19 April, are now being made available to the

province.

It is required that confreres and communities find time to familiarise themselves with the

action plans formulated by the provincial commissions and commit themselves to realizing

them, giving them due regard while planning the activities at the level of the local

communities. It is recommended that confreres and local communities read in common these

action plans at the beginning of the new academic year 2012-13 and seek to implement them.

I place on record the committed cooperation extended by the coordinators and members of

the commissions in drawing up the Action Plans. May the province have the grace to

incarnate better the charism of St. John Bosco as we prepare for the bi-centenary of his birth.

PROVINCIAL FORMATION PLAN 2012 – 13

I. INITIAL FORMATION

1. HUMAN FORMATION

Positive Aspects

a) Generally speaking, those who come to join us are well motivated.

b) Most of the candidates are also talented.

Negative Aspects

a) Candidates seem to be self-centred and unprepared for sacrifice.

b) They show inability to enter into balanced relationships.

c) Indicate a lack of emotional maturity, easily feeling hurt or touchy when corrected.

Lines of Action

a) Facilitate exposure and involvement with less privileged people to foster a mentality for

sacrifice.

b) Create opportunities for mutual appreciation, correction and sharing.

c) In the human maturing process, formees are to be provided with psychological helps in

the onward formation stages especially in the Philosophate before they set out for

Practical Training, and in the third year of theology before the Diaconate.

2. INTELLECTUAL FORMATION

Positive Aspects

a) Formees are motivated to qualify themselves with [secular] degrees.

b) A few candidates are intelligent and distinguish themselves in their studies.

Negative Aspects

a) Formees lack serious reading habits.

b) They indicate mediocrity in academic application.

c) They manifest disconnect between intellectual pursuits and religious vocation.

d) They lack proficiency in English and local language.

Lines of Action

a) Insist on reading serious books & articles.

b) Demand and challenge the formees to be intellectually proficient.

c) Make performance (religious and academic) the eligibility criteria for higher studies.

3. SPIRITUAL FORMATION

Positive Aspects

a) There are indications of growing interest in personal prayer.

b) There is a gradual increase in the primacy for the Spiritual.

c) Retreats are generally made on a serious note.

Negative Aspect

a) There seems to exist a certain disconnect between spirituality and personal life.

b) There is a lack of intense God-experience.

c) There is a lack of appreciation for Salesian spirituality and traditions.

Lines of Action

a) Give opportunities in the communities for deep faith sharing, eg. Lectio Divina.

b) Assist to arrive at meaningful methods of prayer.

c) Educate to respect moments of silence which is essential for prayer life.

d) Insist on regularity for community practices of piety.

4. PASTORAL FORMATION

Positive Aspects

a) Exposure to Salesian Pastoral work is offered in the early stages of formation.

b) Formees are taught to appreciate and remain faithful to the Salesian charism and

traditions.

c) Training is imparted in view of the various ministries in the Province.

Negative Aspects

a) By and large Salesians render services bereft of the centrality of Christ.

b) Preferential option for the poor seems to be on the decline on the personal level.

c) Training insufficient (content wise) for a meaningful youth ministry.

Lines of Action

a) Inculcate reflective prayer and sharing with regard to the apostolate.

b) Insist on the charism of the society through conferences, classes and especially through

sharing of experiences by confreres involved in the marginalized sector.

c) Educate towards a proper planning, execution and evaluation of a meaningful youth

ministry.

d) Introduce the two documents 1) Protection of Minors – Policy Statement and Guidelines

for use in Salesian Institutions 2) Criteria and Norms for Salesian Vocation Discernment

in the Pre-novitiate and the Novitiate, and to be taken up for a deeper study at the

Philosophate. The same need to be disseminated in varying degrees also in the

subsequent stages of formation.

II. ONGOING FORMATION

Positive Aspects

a) Various renewal programmes are available.

b) Province organizes regular quinquennium programmes.

c) Input sessions are organized for different groups at the Province level.

Negative Aspects

a) Insufficient interest is shown by confreres for personal renewal and updating.

b) Drawing up Personal Formation Plan is not taken up seriously.

c) Lectio Divina is not yet fully implemented in some of the communities.

Lines of Action

a) Continue to conscientize about the need for attending renewal programmes, and make it

mandatory to attend at least the animation programmes organized by the Province.

b) Exhort confreres to prepare the Personal Formation Plan at every annual retreat.

c) Set aside a day in a fortnight for Lectio Divina in the Annual Community Plan.

d) Once in five years young priests of the quinquennium are to be offered a course on

“Psychosexual Integration and Celibate Maturity” as part of their ongoing formation.

e) After the Theology Course, Salesian Brothers are to be asked to join their companion

priests for the quinquennium course for topics of a general nature.

1. EDUCATION AND CULTURE

General Objective:

To stimulate and to accompany a process of education that is able to release the creative

possibilities and resources of the person and that favours a critical insertion in the culture and

in the society.

Strategies and Specific Objectives:

To ensure integrated human growth by providing programmes and activities geared towards

physical, intellectual, psychological, affective, social, cultural and moral development.

Lines of Actions:

a) Seminar for School Leaders at the State Level both in Kerala and Karnataka, conducted

preferably in July (In-charge: Fr Kallupurackakam Joe & Fr Puthiyaparambil Manuel).

b) Animation Programme for Teachers for one or two days, conducted in each school on

themes relevant to the teachers (In-charge: Principal of each school). (C)*

2. EVANGELIZATION AND CATECHESIS

General Objective:

To programme an explicit plan of education to the faith, rich in proposals, offered to the

young, in a climate of freedom and in line with our Salesian pedagogy.


To inculcate greater knowledge and love of God by reinforcing the faith of the young through

catechesis, meaningful celebration of the liturgy and sacraments and thus augment the ardour

and commitment in their lives.

Lines of Action:

a) Retreat for Catholic Teachers / Staff and Value Education Programme for Non-Catholic

Teachers / Staff, preferably before December and for a minimum of two days. (C)

b) Retreat for Catholic Students/ Personality Development Programme for Non-Catholic

Students preferably in the Second Term. (C)

c) First Friday Mass and Confession, Celebration of Salesian Feasts (MHOC, Don Bosco,

Dominic Savio, Bl. Michael Rua, etc.) in a fitting manner. (C)

d) Bible Reading in the Morning School Assembly in every school. (C)

e) Display the Crucifix and Pictures of Our Lady, Don Bosco, Dominic Savio and Salesian /

other saints in the school. (C)

f) Animation of teachers by the Rector once in every term. (C)

g) Assessment / Evaluation of teachers on values, morals and knowledge / understanding of

the Salesian method of education through questionnaires/ assessment forms, etc. by the

Principals. (C)

h) Solemn Celebration of the Feast of Don Bosco: Actively involving students, teachers,

parents, Don Bosco Alumni, Salesian Co-operators, and the neighbourhood in making the

Feast of Don Bosco a meaningful event for the Salesian and school community. (C)

3. VOCATION

General Objective:

a) To help the young in the discovery and the realization of their own project of life.

a) To develop values of generosity and responsibility and to make them capable of making

the right vocational choices.

b) To nurture apostolic vocation and giving opportunities for Salesian vocational

experiences.

Lines of Action:

a) A plan to promote vocation to priesthood and religious life: Requesting all the schools to

draw up a long term plan to promote vocation to priesthood and religious life (C).

b) Animation by Salesians with a view to promote vocations. (C)

c) Assigning a Salesian in the school to identify and promote vocation. Requesting each

community to assign a Salesian in the school to identify and promote vocation. (C)

d) Career Orientation Programme for senior class students of each school to be conducted by

e) Ensuring service of a Professional Counsellor: Introducing the service of a professional

counsellor in all our schools. (C)

f) Training programme for Teachers on Guidance and Counselling. Conducting a training

programme for teachers on guidance and counselling by the Province Level Counselling

Service Team under Fr (Dr) Kuriakose Pallikunnel. (C)

g) Promotion of Salesian Literature and Publications in all our schools. (C)

4. GROUPS & MOVEMENTS

General Objective:

To promote and provide group experiences and to lead the young to have experiences of

commitment and co-responsibility.


To give experience and practice in groups.

Lines of Action:

a) Bosco Youth Group, Bosco Kids, Scouts and Guides, and House System: Ensuring the

Formation of Bosco Youth Group, Bosco Kids, Scouts and Guides, and House System in

all our schools. Getting the assistance of the Salesians in-charge at the province level to

educate and train on BYG. (C)

b) Clubs and Associations: Introducing clubs, associations, etc. to encourage the various

aptitudes as well as to cater to the needs of students. (C)

c) Mini Boscoree: Conducting Mini Boscoree for scouts and guides in each region. The

Mini Boscoree in Kerala is to be conducted preferably during Onam holidays and in

Karnataka during the Dasara holidays. (P)

d) Annual Sports Day and Youth Festival: Annual Sports Day and Youth Festival to be

conducted every year by all our schools. (C)

e) Inter-School Event annually: Each Don Bosco School is to organize an Inter-School event

annually. (C)

5. ADMINISTRATIVE AND OTHER MATTERS

a) Update of the list of registers, records and documents: Updating the list of registers,

records, documents and other requirements to be maintained in all our schools. Provide

this list to all our Principals/ Headmasters of schools and a copy to the Rectors. (P)

b) Update of the Service Rules: Updating of the service rules for teachers and staff and

implementing it in all our schools. (P)

c) Commission Meetings: Having three commission Meetings a year -- one to make plan of

action for the year preferably in April, a second meeting before January to review and

monitor the functioning and the third one in March to evaluate the functioning and to

prepare the annual report to be presented to the Provincial Council. (P)

d) Subscription to the booklets on laws: Subscription to the booklets on laws and

ACTION PLAN


Objective:

To enhance the intellectual, social, cultural and emotional skills of students, staff and

management.

Lines of Action:

a) Effective conduct and management of academic requirement.

b) Soft skill training programmes for the students, staff and management and supporting

staff.

To inculcate and spread Gospel Values among the members of the college community.

a) Mass on First Friday for Catholics and Prayer Service or Value Education classes for

b) Annual Retreat for all.

c) Organize prayer groups, especially Jesus Youth Prayer Groups, animated by Salesians.

d) Daily Assembly and good morning talks.

e) Training of Catholic leaders.

f) Appoint a campus minister and give Catholic orientation.

g) Wherever there is hostel:

i. Daily Rosary, Night Prayers and goodnight talk.

ii. Encourage daily participation in the Holy Mass.

3. VOCATION

Objective:

To help the students to make their life choice.

Lines of Action:

a) Conduct orientation and induction programme at the beginning of the course, for the staff

and students.

b) Offer career guidance classes.

c) Each college to provide facility for individual counselling.

d) Strengthen the placement service cell and offer better service.

e) Conduct aptitude test for the outgoing students.

f) Initiate mentoring and train teachers as mentors.

g) Organize a finishing school program.

4. GROUPS AND MOVEMENTS

Objective:

To provide various types of group experience to the students.

Lines of Action:

a) Follow up the groups.

b) Strengthen the NSS units.

c) Rejuvenate the Jesus Youth Groups.

d) Appoint one person as general coordinator for various clubs and groups – preferably a

Salesian.

e) Start Bosco Youth Group. Each college should have at least one unit of Bosco Youth

Group running during the coming academic year. This will be done in collaboration with

the Regional Salesian Youth Delegates in Kerala and Karnataka.

f) Collaborate with the University and the Government and tap the resources and funds.

5. ADMINISTRATIVE MATTERS

a) Master Plan: Help each college to draw up a Master Plan. And present it to the

Provincial council for approval. The animation programme for the Managers and

Principals will be a preparation for this.

b) Audit of the College: The commission members will visit the colleges and take stock of

the situation of the college and evaluate the implementation of the action plan other

policies regarding the colleges.

c) Printing of Service Rules: A booklet containing the service rules for the staff of the

colleges will be printed. This will be done in collaboration with the commission for

schools.

d) Revise salary.

e) ISO certification and NAAC accreditation.

f) Make full utilization of facilities.

POLICY OF PROMOTION & SELECTION OF CANDIDATES TO THE PROVINCE

1. The following criteria describe the requirements for admission to the aspirantates in the

province:

a) The applicant must be a "fully initiated" Catholic.

b) The applicant must be 15 years or above and should have passed class X / secondary

school / Diploma / PUC / Degree or above.

c) The applicant must have a desire to dedicate his life for the salvation of the young

people of today.

d) The applicant must be enjoying good physical and psychological health.

e) During the camp days or in an interview with the vocation director the applicant must

demonstrate sufficient intelligence so as to complete his future seminary studies and

college studies.

2. The criteria for the admission of the graduates and post graduates.

a) After the selection, the candidate could be referred to the provincial who in turn

would entrust the candidate to a rector of a regular community who would take care

of his formation besides involving the candidate in various activities of the

community.

b) If the candidate be found fit for the congregation, the last six months of his stay could

be considered as pre-novitiate period for which he should be sent to the Pre-novitiate

community.

3. Policies for the admission to the Apostolic School in Karnataka

a) The candidate must produce a letter from the parish priest.

b) The candidate must be hailing from a good practicing catholic family.

c) The candidate must have sufficient intelligence and have completed class VII in the

academic year 2011-12.

d) The candidate must have a wish to pursue studies in our English medium school at

Tumkur and become a Salesian of Don Bosco.

e) The candidate should be able to pay at least Rs. 600/ per month as boarding fee.

f) Deserving candidates may be offered a maximum of 50% of school fees as

scholarship.

g) The candidate shall be selected after a written test and an interview.

ACTION PLAN 1. PRESENT SITUATION

a) Nuclear families are on the increase in both regions.

b) Deteriorating religious values among the young and families and ambitious children.

c) Lack of support and encouragement from the part of the parents.

d) Negative propaganda in the media against priests and religious.

e) Reluctance on the part of some bishops to let promising candidates to opt for religious

Congregations.

f) We are perceived as Latin by some Syrian parish priests and as Syrian by some Latin

parish priests. Hence, their lack of cooperation.

2. LINES OF ACTION

a) The vocation commission suggests that the theme of this year's vocation day be

"Proposing Vocations in the Local Community." Posters and prayer services will be

prepared and sent to the houses in preparation for the Vocation day. (29 October)

b) Vocation Directors of both regions shall conduct at least a few camps and retreats for

Catholic school children and youth in every community and neighbouring parishes with

help of the youth animators.

c) “Suvahini” of Karnataka region and “Don Bosco Vazhikatti” of Kerala will be improved

with Salesian matter.

d) We shall get the help of senior aspirants during summer Vocation camps.

e) A hand out will be prepared by the commission to be inserted in the ordination invitations

of our deacons this year.

f) Both the vocation promoters shall take initiatives in inserting on the province Web site

segments on vocation.

Besides all that are mentioned above, the following activities done by the regional vocation

ACTION PLAN

a) In order to give a new impetus to the Salesian Family, the commission will organize a

meeting of the delegates of the Co-operators, Don Bosco Alumni, and ADMA a day

before/after the Rector‟s meeting.

b) For effective animation of the Co-operators, the commission will organize a meeting in

each zone of both Karnataka and Kerala regions. During that zonal meeting, the

commission will focus on the guidelines given by the Rector Major in preparation for

the bicentenary celebration of the birth of Don Bosco. The commission will also give

practical guidelines to the local units regarding the dissemination of the theme at the

local level.

c) The commission will continue to make sure that each unit organizes one-day retreat in

preparation for Easter.

d) The commission will prepare a list of well trained and qualified Co-operators and avail

their services and skills in various units and apostolate of the Salesian community.

e) With the consent of the rectors of the formation houses, the provincial delegate and the

coordinator will visit the formation houses – Pre-Novitiate, Novitiate & Post Novitiate

houses; KJC – to speak about the co-operators movement.

f) Every unit of the Salesian Co-operator will try to promote the Salesian bulletin and also

try to contribute by way of giving news about their activities and views on current

issues.

g) For strengthening the bond among the Salesian Co-operators and celebrate the same

identity, the commission will continue to exhort them to celebrate the birthdays and

anniversaries of the family members during their monthly gatherings and to organize

monthly prayer meetings in one of the houses of a Co-operator.

h) For the effectiveness of the commission it was decided to have a meeting with the Co-

operators‟ council meeting in August 2012.

i) A mid-year evaluation of the activities of the commission will be done in October /

November Provincial Council of the Co-operators.

j) The Salesian Family Day will be organized on the first Sunday of November at KJC,

Bangalore for the Karnataka region. For greater participation and for the effective

animation of the family members in Kerala region, the commission proposed that the

Family Day could be conducted at various zones viz. Thope, Vaduthala and DB Bhavan

(Mannuthy). This will be organized in November, December and January. However, a

wider consultation will be made in August 2012 among the family members of the

region.

k) In order to revive the units that are inactive, the commission proposes the following:

i. Appointment of the local delegate should be based on his interest for the growth

of the movement.

ii. The Provincial delegate is requested to keep a personal contact with the local

delegates and to encourage the local delegates so that they may take an active

role in the animation of the Co-operators.

iii. To encourage and revitalize every unit, the delegate will visit every unit at least

once a year through his animation along with the local delegate.

iv. The local delegate is requested to visit the inactive members of the respective

unit and make them aware of the Salesian call they have received.

v. Let the commission make sure with the help of the local delegate that regular

monthly meetings and activities are organized in each local unit.

vi. The Provincial delegate and Provincial coordinator of the Co-operators of the

province will write a letter to every local delegate and the coordinator to prepare

an action plan for the current academic year keeping in mind the four

dimensions of the youth ministry. This action plan as well as the final evaluation

at the end of the academic year will have to be presented to the Provincial Co-

coordinator/ the delegate. Hence this year each unit is requested to do the

following:

a) Make family visits in order to help the sick and the aged to rid

loneliness.

b) Conduct Bible quiz for the altar boys

c) Organize a programme for the young people of the locality viz. career

guidance

d) Try to identify young people who show inclination to religious and

priestly life.

e) Animate various groups of young children: eg. Altar servers, Mission

League, KCYM, CLC, BOSCO Youth etc.

l) The commission will try to initiate new units at Prakashpalaya, Lourdunagara, and KGF

with the help of the respective community animators. The commission will also follow

up the formation of the aspiring co-operators at Bathery and Angadikadavu.

m) The vocation directors of the region will be informed in advance to address the zonal

meetings of the co-operators to prepare strategies for promoting vocations to the

members of the Salesian family.

n) For the Formation of both the regular and the new members the provincial delegate will

prepare animation notes on various themes and send them to each local unit.

3.2 DON BOSCO ALUMNI

a) Every unit will hold an Annual General Body Meeting (AGM) during which the Salesian

Community, teachers and alumni members along with their families will have an

occasion to get to know each other.

b) In all formal and non-formal settings, alumni movement will be officially initiated.

Alumni members will be of great benefit to our institution at every stage by way of

expertise, financial assistance, legal assistance etc. The Rector/ Principal/ Headmaster/

local delegate will see to the animation of the local unit. The colleges and schools will

make a special effort to begin the units.

c) A list of well trained and qualified alumni members will be prepared and their service

will be made available to our institutions.

d) The Rectors/ Principals/ Headmasters/ Local delegate will keep up the contact with the

alumni through e-mail especially during Christmas and Easter Season through e-

newsletter, face book etc. An update on the various events of the institution will keep the

spirit of alumni alive.

e) The students passed out through MoRD Project as well as in the YaR sector too will be

included in the alumni movement.

f) The alumni movement will be extended also to our past aspirants. The Rectors of

aspirants will maintain a data bank of the aspirants. Most of them seem to be well placed

in the society.

g) Better follow up of GEX (Young Alumni) to be ensured by having more batch gatherings

under the supervision of the Rector/Principal/ Headmaster/ Local Delegate on a day that

is fixed earlier. There can be more than one GEX unit within the same institution.


a) At least once in two months the local delegate will meet the alumni members and animate

them.

b) Half day animation will be conducted for the alumni during Christmas and Lent.

c) A combined animation for the local delegates of alumni, co-operators and ADMA will be

conducted at the provincial level.

d) The delegate and some of the members of alumni will address the students of philosophy

and novices to brief them about the movement.

e) As far as possible, every unit will be visited by the Provincial delegate or by one of the

Provincial council members.

f) Alumni movement will be introduced to the students in the schools and colleges at least

one year prior to the passing out rather than at the end of the academic session.

3. VOCATION

a) At least twice a year the alumni will address the school/ college community to inspire the

present students.

b) Encourage all the registered alumni members to have Don Bosco Bulletin in their homes.

c) Career Guidance, Soft Skills and Life Skills will be imparted to schools and colleges

using the resource persons from the alumni.

d) A booklet regarding the working of alumni and a short PowerPoint presentation will be

made available to all the institutions to motivate the students to join the movement.


a) Every institution should maintain a data bank of the alumni for future reference. When

Salesians change, the continuity of the movement is to be ensured.

b) If possible, the alumni should be given the provision to register on the website year-wise /

batch-wise.

c) Newsletter of the alumni will be published once a year.

d) The commission will meet twice a year to monitor the functioning of the alumni in the

province.

e) The houses in Karnataka shall be encouraged to begin as many alumni units as possible.

f) Every existing unit should take up more activities at the unit level to attract more alumni

to get involved into the unit.

g) Batch gatherings are to be encouraged in our campus provided at least one Salesian is

present.

h) The alumni members who are able to extend financial support to our apostolate should be

encouraged to take up specific and concrete project at the local and provincial settings

rather than giving monetary assistance to the former Rector/ Principal/ Headmaster etc.

3.3 ASSOCIATION OF MARY HELP OF CHRISTIANS (ADMA)

ACTION PLAN

Introduction

There are three units of ADMA in our Province. They are 1) Don Bosco, Irinjalakuda,

2) Don Bosco, Vaduthala and 3) Don Bosco Bhavan (Mannuthy). All together there are 160

active members in these three units. In the past scholastic year (in July 2011), 8 members

took their promise as ADMA members in Don Bosco Bhavan (Mannuthy). 20 members are

getting ready for their promise in the coming months at Don Bosco Bhavan (Mannuthy). Don

Bosco Angamaly and Kristu Jyothi College have under the leadership of Fr J. Joseph and Fr

Gilbert Choondel respectively started giving initial formation to the would-be ADMA

members. Don Bosco, Angadikadavu, and Don Bosco, Pavur, under the leadership of Fr Jose

Koyickal and Fr Aloysius respectively, are taking steps to initiate ADMA in their

communities.


a) The ADMA members to be given animation on Don Bosco and on the preventive system

twice a year in the months of October and March 2012.

b) The ADMA members to be given animation on the importance of the bi-centenary of

Marian Congress in Italy


a) Trimonthly recollection to be held for the ADMA members.

b) The ADMA members have the special privilege of plenary indulgences on nine days

a year. The following are the days on which they get plenary indulgences: 25 January, 31

January, 25 March, 24 May, 31 May, 15 August, 08 September, 8 December and 25

December. Hence special spiritual animation in preparation for the above will be done

for them.

c) One of the important duties of ADMA members is to pray for vocations in the church and

for Salesian family. Hence whenever they gather together they do pray for this intention.

They also pray daily for this intention personally.

d) Another important responsibility they take upon themselves is to spread devotion to the

Eucharistic Lord and Our Blessed Mother. Hence they do the needful to propagate these

two devotions dear to the heart of Don Bosco by giving Marian Prayer Booklets.. These

Eucharistic and Marian prayer booklets in English, Malayalam and Kannada would be

distributed to all the catholic staff and students in all our Salesian communities by the

Province spiritual Animator of ADMA after having given a meaningful introduction to

the same in the coming scholastic year.

e) The ADMA members to initiate chain Rosary and Eucharistic adorations for the

intentions of the Salesians and the Salesian family.

3. VOCATION

a) Promoting vocation is an important responsibility of every ADMA member. Hence they

help the vocation promoter in promoting vocations to Salesian life by identifying

candidates from their neighbourhood.

b) Once in three months (June, September, December, March) ADMA members to be

animated on their unique vocation to be an ADMA member.


a) ADMA Members meet together monthly.

b) Birthdays and feast days of the members to be celebrated when they gather together

monthly.

c) Annual Marian Pilgrimage according to their regulations to be conducted unit wise.

d) Spread devotion to the Eucharist and Our Blessed Mother by free distribution of leaflets

on the above topic and prayers on the same.

e) The members to celebrate Annual Marian day. (Article 11)

f) Local level Salesian Family Day to be celebrated annually. (Article 11)

SUGGESTIONS TO INITIATE MORE UNITS OF ADMA IN THE PROVINCE

1. At the Provincial Level:-

a) Identify the communities of the Province where ADMA can easily be started.

b) The Provincial to appoint a spiritual animator for ADMA in these communities. (Article

13)

c) The ADMA Animator of the Province to meet together with the ADMA animators of the

communities and make an action plan to initiate ADMA.

d) ADMA to be part of the syllabus for the Novices, the final year students of the

Philosophate and the Deacons of the Theologate to make them aware of Don Bosco's

Marian and Eucharistic Ministry.

e) The Rector Major has recently introduced the concept of Youth ADMA and thus he has

also stressed the need of family apostolate to be more effective. Any Catholic who has

completed the age of 18 is eligible to become a member of ADMA.

f) According to Article 7 of the regulations, it belongs to the Salesian provincial to erect the

ADMA in the institutions of the Salesians and of the Daughters of Mary Help of

Christians. This is to be implemented in the F.M.A convents so that ADMA can be

initiated.

g) The ADMA Spiritual Animator to promote ADMA by initiating satellite units in distant

places where there are Don Bosco Alumni and others who are Marian devotees, after due

preparation, and attaching them to a Mother unit of ADMA existing in a Salesian

community.

h) Initiate ADMA in as many Salesian communities as possible as it is more of a pious

association in which ordinary faithful devoted to Our Blessed Mother can form part and

thereby enjoy the spiritual benefits of the nine days of plenary indulgences. The Rector

Major exhorts us to bring in a vast movement of persons to be in communion with the

Salesian family. ADMA which has typically Salesian spirituality with the devotions to the

Blessed sacrament and our Blessed Mother is indeed a wonderful tool in our hands to

spread these two devotions and thus to obtain grace for the Salesian family and the

Church at large. Among the ADMA members the more committed ones could be invited

to become Salesian cooperators as well. In order to receive the spiritual benefits of the

nine days of plenary indulgences granted to ADMA members the Salesian cooperators,

past pupils and other Marian devotees to be initiated to ADMA.

i) As ADMA is still in the initial stage in our province, a PowerPoint Presentation of

ADMA could be presented to the leaders of the communities by the Animator of ADMA

during the Rectors meeting 2012 and promote ADMA in our Province .

2. At the Local Level

a) Where can ADMA be started?

i. ADMA can be introduced to people who attend Holy Mass in our houses.

ii. ADMA can be introduced to the Catholic staff of our institutions.

iii. ADMA could easily be introduced to the Co-operators and Don Bosco Alumni and

their family members.

1. Re-releasing the film ‘Mission to Love’ with Malayalam and Kannada sub-titles

The commission through Fr C.J Sebastian will work towards garnering the copyright of the

widely esteemed film on Don Bosco „Mission to Love‟ produced by RAI, Italy. Once the

copyright is bagged, the film will be re-released in the Province in DVD format with sub-

titles in Malayalam and Kannada.

2. Media Literacy Sessions for Parents

The commission will assist the schools, colleges and parishes of the Province to organize

media literacy seminars for parents, during one of the PTA meetings to educate them into the

right use of the modern means of communication especially television, internet and mobile

phones from the perspective of the formation of their children.

3. Regional Level Media Education Package for teachers

The commission will offer a media education package for teachers of schools and colleges in

Vaduthala for those in Kerala and at the Provincial House for those in Karnataka, equipping

them to respond to the challenges posed by the media to the children and the young.

4. Membership in SIGNIS

The commission will work towards more Salesians and Salesian Houses taking individual

and institutional membership in SIGNIS and ICPA, the official media bodies of the Catholic

Church, that offer financial assistance for various media projects.

5. Translation of ‘Media Guide’

The commission will translate the media literacy textbook in Malayalam „Media Guide‟ into

English and Kannada to groom the young generation with the required media management

proficiency.

6. Publication of ‘Christ Times’

The commission will re-launch „Christ Times‟, the Catechetical Newspaper in English, to be

distributed in schools and parishes. Fr Gilbert Choondal will do it in English, Fr C.J

Sebastian in Malayalam and Fr Anil D‟Sa in Kannada.

7. Constitution of Editorial Boards for Don Bosco Magazines

The commission will propose the editorial boards for the Salesian Bulletins in Malayalam

and Kannada to be approved by the Provincial Council. Fr Bobby Kannazhath will prepare

the editorial policy for the magazine to be submitted to the Provincial Council for ratification.

8. Promotion of Don Bosco Magazine and books on Don Bosco

The commission will prepare a practical package for the promotion and distribution of the

Salesian Bulletins and Salesian Literature across the State.

9. ISBN Certification

The commission will process the ISBN certification for the books published by Don Bosco

Publications in Kerala.

10. Launching Don Bosco Bookstall at Vennala

The commission will explore and process the opening of a bookstall at Don Bosco Vennala,

on the pattern of St. Paul‟s, to sell Salesian literature and books published by Don Bosco

Publications.

ACTION PLAN

a) The commission proposes to facilitate setting up of a desk/office towards local fund

raising in each local house. This will be begun with those institutions wanting to take this

initiative and willing to participate. The commission will support in setting up of such an

office/desk and equip the persons allocated through training and support. They will also

be followed up to ensure the task is taken up and to monitor the same.

b) Support and enable all communities to take up a visioning and strategic planning exercise

to have an integrated “Development Plan” for next 15 to 20 years. The commission

proposes to offer the support and facilitation in this matter through required training and

assistance of expertise towards realizing this.

c) The commission will study and inform/instruct the communities particularly the

administrators on the approved “Manual for Administrators” approved by SPCSA.

6. Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS)

Bosco Institute of Social Sciences (BISS) is a resource centre of excellence in research,

training, documentation and advocacy. Established in 2004-05 as the Silver Jubilee memorial

of the Salesian Province of Bangalore, BISS marks the flowering of over four decades of

dedicated service experience of rehabilitating and mainstreaming of marginalized and

vulnerable sections of the society such as bonded labourers, fisher community, delinquent

and vagrant youth, children on the streets, child labourers, school-drop outs, abused and

trafficked children, etc., by the Salesians of Don Bosco in the states of Karnataka and Kerala.

BISS intends to scientifically and systematically capture the rich experiences from the above

fields and place the wealth of knowledge gained and the lessons learned before the larger

society. Essentially, BISS is a knowledge management centre where knowledge is collated

through systematic and scientific data and information gathering processes, knowledge is

created through research and advanced analysis applications and knowledge is disseminated

through various capacity building programmes and modes of communication. Thus it aims to

contribute towards improving the quality of life of the socially, economically, culturally and

educationally deprived, marginalized and at-risk sections of the society, especially the young.

BISS is confident of being able to contribute towards motivating that section of society which

is more fortunate, to participate in all the efforts to provide a life of joy and dignity for every

human being, particularly the young. BISS is also hopeful of sharing in the on-going

processes towards empowering and orienting young people, including those who plan and

execute programmes in the public space, in an effort to bringing about wellbeing and balance

in society.

BISS has been registered as a Society under the Registrar of Societies, Karnataka. It has also

obtained 12A and 80G registration under IT.

Action Plan

1. Administrative

- Work towards strengthening the staff position.

- Initiating the process for an FC number for BISS.

- Looking for funds for BISS.

- Initiating the physical infra-structure for BISS.

2. Research

- Complete the Research Study on DBCLM, Davangere.

- Taking up one more Research Study on another institution of our province.

3. Training

- Organizing two training programmes during the year.

4. Documentation

- As part of its documentation activities, BISS is intending to prepare a series of

documentary movies on some of the unique apostolates in our province. This year

BISS will prepare two documentary films of about half-an-hour duration each, on

Snehabhavan, Palluruthy. BISS has already started working towards this.
