survey that pop is mainly preferred by many people, besides this is also my ideal genre of music. I also believe that this genre relates well with my target audience.

• My magazine will include interviews with Pop artists, new releases, reviews, stories/Articles related to Pop artists, upcoming Pop music events.

Similar Magazines

• My magazine will be similar to these magazines, the only different thing is that my magazine will be a music magazine.

• The things that will be the same are the layout, composition, so where each convention will be placed. It will be a monthly magazine, meaning that the front cover will be less busy.

Masthead Ideas

• Replay – relates well to music and songs, by referring to the replay button.

• Repeat – I thought repeat will be suitable for a music magazine masthead as it easily links to music. When you think of the word repeat, you immediately think ‘music’.

• Shuffle- this word relates to songs, when you think of ‘shuffle’ you think of songs, different genres of music, however my magazine will only be based on pop.

• Play – I like this masthead idea because it easily links to music and its short and snappy.

• Retune – this masthead sounds classy and very unique to other magazines.

Page 8: Initial pitch

I created a poll on my website, and got people to vote which masthead they thought was the best, and most appropriate for a pop magazine. Most people voted ‘RETUNE’. I think the typography is suitable for a music magazine, and is also most importantly easily read.

Font FacesWith my chosen title name I have found suitable font faces. I have decided on one of these as the previous set of fonts were very stylish and too much was going on. These font faces are more simple and clear. They seem more original and meet the expectations of a classy and professional looking magazine. I am choosing to use the second font Nouvelle Vague as it is the most original and classy looking one on there.

Price

£3.80My music magazine will be an expensive monthly magazine,

which means it will be available to buy every month. It will be less busy with professional photography/models.

• 6 months: £24.99• 12months: £39.99

Concept

• The music genre I will base my magazine on will be pop music.

• Potential target audience will be young adults, ages 16-21. • The unique selling points will include celebrity gossips, fact

files, release dates of latest singles/albums.• My front cover will always have a famous artist at the

current date on it in the Pop genre, male or female. I could mainly use male celebrities in my front pages as my target audience is females and they are most hooked to the magazine if there is an attractive male on the front cover.

Colour Scheme

As I’m thinking to take photographs outside in a park where there are lots of trees I will use the greens tones from the trees, and the rest of the colour will match with my models outfit and style! The colour scheme will include at least 3 colours. I will used the darker colours for most probably text so it is easily seen/read. These colours will include white, green, and pink/purple tones.

USP• As my music magazine will be sold monthly, each time you buy a

magazine every month you will receive a coupon. For every 5 coupons you win a free CD featuring all the latest pop songs.

• Plus if you are subscribed to my magazine, it will be delivered to your door every month, by being subscribed you benefit from 25% discount.

‘Retune is music, without music life would be a mistake.’I think this USP is my favourite which is why I am choosing it for my actual magazine front page. The reason for it being the best is because it is very meaningful and contains a very famous saying ‘without music life would be a mistake’. The slogan is also very encouraging, as it persuades people to buy the magazine.

‘To make life worth living music is important, Retune is essential.’This USP slogan was also very attention seeking and meaningful, however I think the fact that I was longer than the previous idea, makes it degrade. I think the best USP for a magazine is where it is short, concise and to the point; which is why I did not choose this one.

Story Ideas

Story ideas for my double page spread:

• First story- Dream come true!- How Jessie became a pop star.

• Second story- Breast Cancer Alert- Lady Gaga with the cases of breast cancer.

• Third Story- Whitney Houston’s last words.

Page 15: Initial pitch

“Jessie is a pop star!”I decided to pick the first story idea, as I have to link all my images that will be in my front cover, contents page and double page spread. So I will stick to the same set of photos throughout. Though I will use the other photos as posters maybe on the contents page.

Narrative: This story line can be about a new pop star and how they have become famous. The person’s hobbies and daily routines can be included so that new fans can get to know him/her better. Photographs of their home, family and close mates and even pets can be photographed. Other things that can be talked about, are school life and university life if they have studied that far and degrees along with jobs they are already in. They can tell us about their lifestyle what the like and dislike, like the food and hobbies and their daily routines. How their lives have changed after becoming famous, what they have given up and what has not changed. Any future aims they have in mind. My double page spread will be an interview type spread, with ‘Jessie’ talking about the changes of her life.

LocationsI have many locations in mind of where I will take my photos for my magazine.

• Green Screen

• Bedroom• Park with loads of

trees

My media teacher would be able to provide a green screen and give me permission touse it. By taking photo’s of my model(s) infront of a green screen I will be able to easily cut around them using Photoshop, which will enable me to place my model against a different background, or possible against a solid colour such as white on my front cover which is conventional of my genre of magazine.

With this location I plan on photographing my model laying on bed sheets. I believe in using this location/prop that readers would associate the white sheets with purity but also subtly symbolisesSex, which supports Laura Maulvey’s theoryAs the reader would look at her image, and also view her as a sex icon.

Taking photo’s of my model in an open park as such would connote that they are free and pure. The natural light may not work well for me and make it difficult when taking my photo’s as I can not control the direction of the light and how it affects my model. To take my photo’s in this park I will need contact the local council in order to receive permission to take my photo’s here.

Marketing

Social Networking Sites

BillboardsPosters

TV Advert

Through marketing my magazine on social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook, I will be directly reaching my target audience of 16-21 year olds, as they most commonly used these websites to socialise.

Those within my target audience over the age of 17 who drive are more likely to see my billboards in their daily routine, which will be bright and eye-catching, attracting them to buy my magazine.

Advertising my magazine on TV would reach a very large audience and grab a lot of attention . My target audience would be very likely to see it, however this is the most expensive form of advertising out of my choices so may be unsuitable, and is a possible choice to consider after my magazine has been out for a few months and has brought in money.

Posters advertising my magazine can be situated in various places where you would find my target audience such as schools, colleges etc. this is the cheapest form of advertising making it easiest to do, and also allows me to target various places.

Marketing & Advertising

Social NetworksI have created a Twitter page and a Facebook like page for my pop magazine.• @retunemag• www.facebook.com/retunemag

I have created these pages to promote my magazine, and so that it is recognised. It is an easy way of advertising.‘Retune’ magazine will also be advertised on billboards.

Page 20: Initial pitch

Marketing

The easiest way to market my magazine would be online. This is as my demographic are very into websites and socialising and therefore if I advertised on websites they know and like, I could reach a high percentage of my audience. Also, sites such as Facebook and Twitter would be crucial in advertising my product especially with such a young demographic. Creating a ‘like’ page for my magazine would create a buzz around it, and every young girl clicking like on that page, will predominantly open the door for me to reach a bigger audience which are her Facebook friends. Using such social media will allow for synergy between my magazine and its online presence.

Publishing and Distributing

There are three options when it comes to who can distribute my magazine. This includes a major publishing house such as IPC and EMAP, a small independent publisher such as Independent Publishers Guild or Water stone's or I could also publish my magazine by myself which essentially means publishing it online.I researched these organisations and came to the conclusion that EMAP would be the best choice for my magazine which is aimed at young girls.EMAP is a well known publishing house. It doesn’t publish a magazine which would directly compete with mine. EMAP try to provide the best service they can for their customers and they give their customers commercial understanding which I would need. Also as they are well known they will have more recourses available to them. As the Marxist ideology states, ‘power resides with those who have ownership and control over the means of production and distribution’.According to this theory, EMAP as well IPC are very powerful publishing houses and there this could help my magazine sell. As EMAP have much more resources they are also much richer than small independent publishers. This would mean that the promotion budget would be much higher than if I chose to use an independent publisher. Therefore my magazine could attract a much higher audience if I decided to use EMAP. This publishing house will also have the funds to be able to promote my magazine on multi-media platforms to help me reach much more of my demographic. Also having more funds will allow me to have a better website and therefore I can use synergy to promote my magazine.
