HOW IS MIDDLE SCHOOL DIFFERENT?

Different Classes You go to a different classrooms for many of your classes. You learn where each class is and what time it starts.New Rules Student Handbook will be taught and reviewed at the

beginning of the year. It’s your responsibility to become familiar and follow the

school rules.A Busier Schedule Have 5 minutes to get from one class to the next

MAKE THE MOST OF MIDDLE SCHOOL

Get Organized ‘Binder’ with dividers (see tips on KiMS PTSA site) PowerSchool Learning/HAIKU websites with

assignments and due dates Bring all supplies to class and be prepared. Create an after school schedule for your

homework and activities. Regularly check grades online –Skyward

WHAT’S TYPICALLY IN YOUR BACKPACK? LAPTOP COMPUTER -heavier item; pack it closest to your back

BINDER -try lightweight individual or ‘accordion’ folders

PLANNER/CALENDAR -can tear out used pages- store or recycle

WATER BOTTLE -Refill during the day as needed

Pencils/Pens/Calculator- bring only as much as needed day to day

LUNCH (if not buying) – consider light weight lunch container

PE uniform -store in PE locker (and take home to laundry!)

GET INVOLVED Take Action Join a club, participate in sports, explore and

experience Elective class interests

BE A SELF ADVOCATE! Asking your Teachers for help when you need it

During class; before- or after-school; email teacher directly

Check in with your Counselor if you need… Help with a plan to improve your grades. To report any Harassment, Intimidation, Bullying Ask questions about your schedule. Talk about a personal problem. Seek financial supports (lunch,supplies,fees,etc) Just want to say hello and get acquainted.

Band or Orchestra- NOTE: it is not too late to start in 6th grade.

Take home, discuss, get Parent/Guardian SIGNATURE and return it to your elementary teacher !
