EMERGING­POLLUTANTS:­FINDING­SOLUTIONS­TO­ELIMINATE­THEM

For­more­than­15­years,­Saur­has­focused­dedicated­research­resources­on­evaluating­the­risks­posed­by­micropollutants­and­developing­solutions­that­guarantee­the­safety­of­drinking­water.­The­CarboPlus®­process­that­eliminates­micropollutants­such­as­pesticides,­hormones­and­drug­residues­is­central­to­these­solutions.­The­principle­behind­its­effective­action­is­simple:­it­uses­adsorption­to­trap­micropollutants­on­fluidised­activated­carbon,­which­is­then­eliminated.­This­is­a­major­advance­over­alternative­processes­that­work­simply­by­breaking­down­molecules­(using­ozonation)­or­concentrating­them­(using­reverse­osmosis).

Cise­TP­designs,­ installs­and­refurbishes­all­ types­of­water­supply,­wastewater­collection­and­stormwater­drainage­ systems.­ The­ service­ provided­ fits­ perfec-tly­ with­ the­ need­ to­ monitor­ network­ assets,­ which­poses­a­very­real­technical­and­financial­challenge­at­a­time­when­performance­is­being­measured­in­ever-­increasing­detail.

(NODUS:­NETWORKED­EXPERTISEIn­Nodus,­Coved­has­invented­an­innovative­organisational­model­and­datacentre­that­gathers­and­concentrates­all­the­data­generated­by­waste­collection,­treatment,­recovery­and­recycling­services.­Bins,­recycling­points,­containers­and­trucks­are­connected­via­field-deployed­smart­systems,­such­as­waste­level­measurement­sensors,­RFID­(Radio­Frequency­Identification)­chips­and­a­GPS­system­that­tracks­collection­data,­including­weight,­volume,­route­and­times.­Sorting­centres,­composting­centres­and­landfill­sites­are­all­interconnected­with­Nodus,­which­centralises­operating­data­to­optimise­maintenance­operations,­enable­detailed­monitoring­of­electricity­generated­from­biogas­capture­and­optimise­site­operation.­This­process­of­data­centralisation­is­achieved­using­computing­applications­designed­primarily­to­be­decision-support­tools.­Analysis­of­the­data­gathered­allows­Coved­experts­working­at­the­Nodus­Centre­to­model­and­optimise­their­proposals­to­dovetail­with­the­expectations­and­needs­of­each­local­authority.­The­real-time­availability­of­specific­waste­management­data­for­its­own­area­of­operations­gives­customers­complete­control­of­their­own­waste­management­policy.

REUT: A GREEN IDEA FOR GREENSFor­nearly­ten­years,­the­Rhuys-Kerver­golf­course­in­the­Morbihan­region­of­France­has­used­hygienically-treated­wastewater­from­the­neighbouring­(14,500­PE)­Saint-Gildas-de-Rhuys­wastewater­treatment­plant.­Depending­on­rainfall­volumes,­65,000­m3­of­water­are­required­for­between­5­and­6­months­of­the­year­to­water­the­tees,­fairways­and­greens­of­this­

60-hectare­course.­Located­on­the­Rhuys­peninsula,­the­Rhuys-Kerver­golf­course­stretches­for­6­km­along­a­Natura­2000-listed­coastline.­Five­other­courses­managed­by­Blue­Green­also­use­the­REUT­(Reuse­of­Treated­and­Purified­Water)­technique:­Baden,­Pornic,­Port-Bourgenay,­Mazières-en-Gâtine­and­Sainte­Maxime.­

Its­close­working­relationship­with­local­authorities­makes­the­Saur­a­natural­partner­for­the­manage-ment­of­leisure­facilities,­such­as­campsites,­leisure­centres­and­golf­courses.The­golf­courses­managed­by­subsidiary­company­Blue­Green­lead­the­way­with­their­strong­com-mitment­ to­ a­ ‘green­ golf’­ environmental­ policy,­as­do­the­campsites­managed­on­behalf­of­local­authorities­by­the­Flower­Campings­chain.­ In­all­these­specialist­areas,­the­vocation­of­Saur­is­to­offer­its­local­authority­partners­innovative­multi-service­solutions­appropriate­to­the­way­society­is­developing,­backed­by­recognised­expertise­in­the­management­of­outsourced­public­service­facilities­and­amenities.

InternationalAs­a­major­contributor­to­optimising­water­sup-ply­and­wastewater­treatment­worldwide,­Saur­develops­tailormade­packages­of­technical­and­financial­ services­ to­ meet­ the­ specific­ needs­of­ each­ customer.­ In­ Saudi­ Arabia,­ local­ com-pany­Marafiq­has­set­up­MaSa­joint­subsidiary­with­ Saur­ to­ operate­ and­ maintain­ urban­ and­industrial­ water­ supply,­ wastewater­ treatment­and­ cooling­ services­ for­ the­ new­ cities­ and­industrial­complexes­of­Jubail­and­Yanbu.­2014­saw­ the­ commissioning­ of­ a­ new­ desalination­and­ water­ treatment­ plant­ with­ a­ production­capacity­ of­ 100,000­ m3­ per­ day­ in­ response­to­ fast-growing­ demand­ for­ drinking­ water.­ In­Scotland,­Saur­Services­Glasgow­(SSG)­is­opera-ting­the­Glasgow-Dalmuir­wastewater­treatment­plant­until­2026­under­the­terms­of­a­PFI­(Private­Finance­Initiative­-­Fund,­Design,­Build,­Operate)­contract­ with­ Scottish­ Water.­ In­ October­ 2013,­work­began­on­extending­the­plant­with­a­pro-ject­ involving­ 2­ years­ of­ construction­ work,­followed­ by­ two­ years­ of­ testing­ to­ meet­ ad-ditional­ environmental­ challenges.­ In­ Poland,­the­ long-term­ public-private­ partnership­ (PPP)­agreement­ signed­ with­ the­ local­ authority­ of­

Konstancin-Jeziorna­ to­ provide­ wastewater­treatment­ services­ for­ this­ city­ of­ 30,000­ resi-dents­ on­ the­ outskirts­ of­ Warsaw­ is­ a­ perfect­example­ of­ Saur­ DNA.­ In­ Cyprus,­ the­ Vathia-Gonia­wastewater­treatment­plant­near­Nicosia­is­another­example­of­a­successful­partnership­with­a­demanding­customer:­the­Sewage­Board­of­ Nicosia.­ Constructed­ and­ operated­ by­ the­Group,­this­plant­is­the­largest­in­Europe­to­use­membrane­filtration­technology;­all­the­treated­water­ produced­ is­ reused­ for­ agricultural­ irri-gation­on­ this­ island­of­high­water­stress.­The­treatment­plant­is­operated­exclusively­by­local­staff,­ marking­ the­ successful­ outcome­ of­ the­associated­knowhow­transfer­programme.Regardless­ of­ the­ contractual­ model­ adopted­-­from­outsourced­public­service­contract­to­ma-nagement­contract,­service­contract­or­technical­support­ -­ Saur­ and­ its­ subsidiary­ companies­contribute­ cutting-edge­ expertise­ in­ construc-tion,­ operation­ and­ maintenance.­ Close­ to­ its­customers­ geographically­ and­ interactively,­Saur­ is­ distinctive­ for­ applying­ its­ integrated­and­tailormade­approach­to­every­project.

The­Vathia-Gonia­wastewater­treatment­plant­in­Cyprus

MECCA: SAUR SERVES 5 MILLION PILGRIMSWorking­in­partnership­with­the­National­Water­Company­(NWC),­Saur­ensures­that­drinking­water­supplies­are­maintained­throughout­Mecca’s­annual­Haj­pilgrimage,­when­the­city’s­population­increases­from­1.6­million­to­5­million.­Intensified­monitoring­of­pipeline­systems,­mobile­analytical­laboratories­and­air-conditioning­systems,­and­management­of­exceptional­hi-tech­facilities­(23­reservoirs­with­a­total­capacity­of­2­million­m3)­have­all­contributed­to­the­faultless­service­delivered­every­year­since­2011;­a­feat­for­which­the­Group­has­been­congratulated­by­the­Saudi­authorities.
