Jamaica’s Central Location and Global Trade
! There is no doubt that Jamaica has benefited significantly in the past form its central location. ! However, Jamaica’s excellent location is no longer sufficient to effectively compete and maintain its
preeminent position, as a leading transhipment hub. ! Global trends have seen ports evolving from being just a gateway to international trade to become an
integral part of global supply chain and logistics industries through integration with in-land port and multi-modal facilities .
! Jamaica’s Vision 2030 envisages Jamaica becoming a major global logistics hub, capitalising on its transhipment success with a view to transfer this into becoming a major logistics hub. It is within this context that the GOJ and MTW, has developed a series of projects to enhance and support a multimodal strategy of integrating all modes of cargo transportation to enhance Jamaica’s competitiveness within global trade. Tinson Pen was conceived as playing a major role in enhancing KCT position as being the premiere transhipment hub of the Americas, especially in the post-Panama expansion era.

container ports as published by Containerisation International. It operates 24 hours a day, seven days per week on a 365 day basis. KCT has a current operating capacity of 2.8 million TEUs and has the ability to accommodate vessels carrying up to 10,000 TEUs. KCT is one of the busiest Caribbean ports and one of the region’s principal transhipment centres. It is served by a comprehensive range of liner and allied shipping services, with sea links to major global ports, supplemented by feeder links to regional destinations – Caribbean, Central and South America.
The 25-hectares KWL terminal offers 22 hectares of open storage with 30,000 square meters of covered warehousing and cold storage. The company also has 53, 000 square meters of secure off-dock storage for motor vehicles. Operating 24 hours per day, this public wharf, a multipurpose terminal consists of continuous quay of nearly 1,600 meters, provides nine deep water berths for ro-ro, lo-lo activities, limited container handling, general break bulk and bulk shipping services accommodating vessels with draft of 9 metres (29 feet) to 13 metres (42 feet). KWL has several subsidiaries including, Harbour Cold Stores Ltd, a public cold storage facility; and Security Administrators Ltd, providing security services at the port of Kingston, Montego Bay and Port Antonio.

Market assessment of Jamaica’s competitiveness within the global ICT sector | 19
14243-184
3 Key Service segments
In Section 2 above, we presented our audit of Jamaica’s ICT outsourcing sector. This included our understanding of the factors affecting the sector such as telecoms, electricity, office space and human capital, the issues faced by potential and existing investors and the principal areas of strength of Jamaica’s ICT offering.
In this section, we will define five service segments that are best suited to the existing capabilities of Jamaica’s ICT outsourcing sector. We will also discuss a specific niche market that is worth targeting by Jamaica.
In determining the priority segments, we first examined all ICT outsourcing activities. Figure 3.1 shows a breakdown of global ICT outsourcing activity.
