Thank-You Letter. MICA (Mid-Iowa
Community Action, Inc.) recently sent the
Mayflower Residents Association an
appreciation letter for 321 pounds of food
donated in honor of Ariel Lepito’s 23rd
birthday. She is our Grinnell College
graduate intern who has been living on
campus for the last year. This meaningful
gesture, demonstrating how much residents
have enjoyed Ariel, was organized by
Katherine and Kent McClelland.
Walkers and Pushers. In a previous edition
of The Informer, there was a request by
Chery Nelson, Mayflower’s Activities
Director, for volunteers to walk or push
Mayflower residents around campus. It was
accompanied by a clever poem by Netia
Worley who is committed to this concept as
the result of her own service in this
capacity. With the nice weather upon us,
this can be a “win-win”…good for you and
good for a less-abled resident. Please let
Chery know if you can help.
Wellness Resource. Some time ago, we
worked with one of our physical therapists
to take on part-time duties as our Wellness
Coordinator. Because that arrangement is
not working, we have decided to part ways.
At this time, no member of staff has
wellness expertise or responsibilities. We
are working on an alternative, which we
will announce when available.
Beebe Water Heater. You have probably
observed the abstract art painted on the
outside brick near the Beebe building
entrance. Actually, it is solidified seepage as
the result of a leaking water heater on the
second floor above it. That unit broke
down about four weeks ago. Our Facilities
staff has kept it limping along to meet
Beebe’s second-floor hot water needs until a
new one could be manufactured in Atlanta.
That new water heater has now been
installed. Soon, we will begin rebuilding
the water-damaged inside ceiling and wall at
the Beebe entrance…and cleaning up the
outside brick!
Fellowship of Givers. The Mayflower
Foundation Board of Directors hosted their
10th
anniversary dinner for Mayflower
donors on April 25th
. 143 guests were
served a choice of pecan-crusted tilapia or
lemon chicken breast. Besides the
conviviality of friends connecting and new
folks meeting, the evening was punctuated
by 10 examples of giving that have
significantly enhanced Mayflower living
and healthcare. Yet another rose, “Paint
the Town Rose” by Easy Elegance, will be
planted near the north end of Mayflower
Lane in commemoration of these
supporters.
More Giving. Members of the Ripley
United Church of Christ of Traer have
produced 20 quilts gifted to Mayflower’s
healthcare as lap blankets for residents.
This is a timely gift as the theme of May 10th
Ladies Tea is “Quilts.” Marilyn Schuler will
be presenting the program.
Something to Contemplate. Letter to an
individual from the South Carolina
Department of Social Services: “Your food
stamps will be stopped effective March 1992
because we received notice that you passed
away. May God bless you. You may
reapply if there is a change in your
circumstances.”

Mindfulness & Nature Series -- Time in Nature Has Healing & Restorative Power
Physical activity. Beautiful Scenery. Who doesn’t like the occasional hike in the great
outdoors? And when you add a little extra awareness to the experience, your outing can
benefit both your body and your mind!
Hiking/walking with friends while enjoying great conversation is fun! But unless we make a
conscious effort to stop every now and again and really pay attention to where we are and
what we’re doing, we can miss a tremendous amount. Stopping and consciously engaging our
senses (look, listen and savor the silence, smell, taste, touch) when out walking not only calms
and grounds us—but it also deepens our connection to the natural world.

BETWEEN THE BOOKENDS
Accidental Heroes by Danielle Steel is a suspense story. Two planes have just departed for San Francisco from John F. Kennedy airport. At a security checkpoint, TSA agent Bernice Adams finds a postcard of the Golden Gate Bridge bearing an ambiguous message. Who left the postcard behind and what exactly does the message mean? The focus turns to the flight with Helen Smith as its senior pilot. Helen's military service has been exemplary but her husband's death in Iraq was more than anyone should bear. A major film star is on board. So is an off-duty pilot who has just lost his forty-year career. So is a distraught father, traveling with the baby son he has abducted from his estranged wife. Someone
on Helen's plane is planning something terrible. Passengers, crew, and experts on the ground become heroes out of necessity to try to avert tragedy at the eleventh hour.
