OBSERVATORIOBARCELONA
• TOTAL BCN (ene – jun 2013): pasajeros -1,8%; capacidad -12%.
• EUROPA (ene–jun 2013): pasajeros +3%; capacidad -5%.
• INTERCONTINENTAL (ene–jun 2013): pasajeros +14%; capacidad +14%.
• TOTAL BCN (Jan – Jun 2013): passenger -1.8%, capacity -12%. Bar-celona maintains the passenger numbers stable in the first half of the year (-290,000). However, it suffers a significant reduction in capaci-ty, especially due to the decreases in the Spanish routes. The capacity reduction in the Spanish routes has accelerated in the second term of the year (-32%). European traffic grows, but at a moderate speed. The second quarter has seen a speed up of the growth up to 4.9% but this has not fully countered the decrease of Spanish traffic (-12%). In-tercontinental traffic keeps growing due to the growth of capacity and passage towards Africa and the Middle East. capacity reductions in all markets except the intercontinental. Intercontinental capacity grows +22.7% in the second term, above its passenger increase (+14.6).
• SPAIN (Jan–Jun 2013): passenger -13%, capacity -26%. Spanish traffic diminishes 11.5% in the second term. capacity takes a hard dive (-31.5%) in the same period. The capacity and traffic diminishes towards all the big airports, even if Madrid sees the largest absolute decrease.
• EUROPE (Jan-Jun 2013): passenger +3%, capacity -5%. European traffic grows 4.9% in the second term, and brings the passenger total back into the black. nowadays capacity and passenger numbers are extremely close together, with average load factors around 85%.
• INTERCONTINENTAL (Jan-Jun 2013): passenger +14%, capacity +14%. Intercontinental traffic keeps growing strongly, both in capacity as passenger numbers. This is specially true for the north African and Middle East routes. The north American routes have opened again for the Summer season.

• During the Summer season seasonal operators open routes in Bar-celona. This causes the % of total traffic flown by the top 15 airlines to diminish slightly.
• Iberia (-25% pax in the first half of the year) and Air Nostrum (-78%) withdraw from the airport. Vueling benefits from this (+12%). despi-te Iberia’s retreat, the IAG group controls 40% of total traffic in Bcn, mostly due to the specific weight of Vueling (32,9%) on the total num-ber of passengers of the airport.
• Ryanair and Easyjet decrease their presence at the airport, even if they remain the second and third airlines.
• Iberia, Air Europa and Air Berlin keep reducing their capacity at the airport. lufthansa surpasses them in terms of transported passengers for the first half of 2013. Iberia has transported less than half the num-ber of passengers of Easyjet.
• Norwegian grows 41% in the first half of the year and becomes the 10th airline in the ranking.
• The passengers losses of Ryanair (-305,000 passengers), Easyjet (-114,000) and Iberia (-186,000) in the first half of the year counter the great growth of Vueling (+583,000 passengers). This airline is the pri-mary beneficiary of the growing weakness of some of its old compe-titors in Barcelona, acquiring a clearly dominant position with a 33% market share.
• The number of new destinations served from Barcelona has also in-creased significantly, but the growth of Vueling and the partial retreat of Ryanair bring on a significant number of routes with a single ope-rating airline.
• Despite the economic crisis, the routes of Paris (Charles de Gau-lle +43.6% in the first half; Orly +14.7%) and Frankfurt (+9.7%) grow strongly.
• The increase of seasonal routes and operators compensates the de-crease in the top 15 routes of the airport (-7% passengers in the first half of the year).

• Istanbul consolidates itself as one of the Top 5 European Airports moving Madrid to the sixth position. Munich also challenges that po-sition and is likely to beat Madrid in the summer season if the current traffic trends continue. Barcelona is surpassed by Gatwick and oc-cupies the 10th position in the passenger ranking. However, given its seasonality curve, Barcelona can still recover the ninth position. The Moscow airports continue their constant growth.
• Air freight grows 2.7% in the first half of the year. This positive trend is maintained in July (+0.3%).
• The top 15 airlines concentrate most of the airport’s growth: they grow 10% on average. This is caused by the entry of Emirates in the ranking and the growth rates of Qatar Airways and American Airlines.
• Singapore Airlines suffers the competence of the Gulf airlines; they capture traffics that previously were travelling with SQ. The Gulf air-lines grow strong and consolidate themselves as the third and fourth cargo airlines at the airport, after the UPS and dHl courier compa-nies.
• Cargo airlines or the ones that maintain weekly long haul flights accumulate most of the air freight in Barcelona. Their traffic is quite balanced betweeen exports and imports, except for the American air-lines (mostly exports) and cargolux (mostly imports to Bcn). The case of Aeroflot is interesting, since its demand is totally biassed towards exports. The IAG group seems to be losing presence at the airport. .

• Barcelona is the third world airport in terms of low fare seat capacity: 66% of the seat offer in Barcelona belong to low fare airlines. This highlights the attractiveness of Barcelona as a direct destination, since these airlines operate mostly point to point passage. In fact, during 2012 Barcelona was the 4th city in Europe in terms of O&d traffic. Most of these travelled to Barcelona directly from Europe.
• All the major low fare airlines of Europe operate in Barcelo-na. This makes the fares to fly to Barcelona very competitive. This helps to maintain a high demand and to diversify the risk among a large number of different operators. • Barcelona has a large unserved intercontinental demand and it still lacks a based airline offering long haul services. When the low fare airlines offer long haul services in the me-dium term, Barcelona might play a significant role in their strategies.
• In the first half of 2013, Spain has a higher decrease of traffic than other large European markets like Germany or Italy. france (Paris), UK or the netherlands have even rea-ched positive growth rates despite the slow economic situa-tion in Europe.
• Barcelona manages to minimize the loss of passengers that affects most of Spain. Barcelona takes advantage of its posi-tioning for better European travel than Madrid as well as its better attractiveness for tourism. Barcelona is also the main Spanish gate for the intercontiental passengers from canada, Israel, India or Japan among others.
