The FMA Informative was very fortunate to be able to talk with Wesley Crisostomo while he is currently is visiting Arizona and Cali-fornia and has been traveling here and there recruiting warriors to the Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas art. In this FMA Informative issue Kuya Bunal Wesley Crisostomo discusses the very basic concepts and principles of Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas. Since visiting the west coast Wesley has started to establish a root base of students for Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas, he has 5 qualified students with 2 promoted to full Palaban status at this time. Wesley goes to Arizona from Long Beach, California to maintain the training program he has with 2 Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas practitioners. If you remember Wesley Crisostomo was the Filipino martial artists that When he went on vacation last August of 2015, he had initially wanted to just meet the local faces of Eskrimadors that he had met and heard of during his younger days in the then town of Mandaue City. Wesley was the one of the main persons responsible in putting together the Visayan Eskrimadors Friendship Gathering (VEFG). This gathering honored the presence of Eskrimadors with direct lineages to Saavedras and Anciong Bacon. Also the direct heirs of the systems left behind by families of Canete, Maranga, Lapunti, Velez, Villasin, Ceniza, Patalinghug, Heyrosa, Marapao, Elizar, Carin, Berdin, and the local manongs in the area.

Synopsis of Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas (PAS)

Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas is generally considered a close quarter style of Filipino martial arts. It is a cu-vi-linear concept with a spice of bluffs and feigns. The techniques acquired do not conform to common rules in competition and one and is often times branded as a Dirty street fighting style. It incorporates deceptive moves and strikes using the flicking or snapping method. It takes advantage of the speed of the weapon hitting its target unnoticed as there is never a chance to telegraph the intent to strike. The angles of attack are no different than when in a defensive mode. Counters are always managed by the empty hand while the weapon hand delivers the strikes only to specific targets in the body. Expertise takes longer to attain than other systems because this style is practiced with another practitioner who moves and counters each move or strike done. There is an intellectual sparring done because none of the practitioners acts as a dummy partner. Precision and accuracy of all strikes are very much set in mind. It also practices exercises that makes it possible to perform such strike even in awk-ward positions. Exercises include upper body strengthening for killer strikes and striking techniques. Other ex-ercises include punches, elbows, head butts, forearm strikes. Finger jabs, palm thrusts, knee strikes, kicks to the lower part of the body. Analyzing your partner’s body language based on footwork is constantly in one’s mind. None of these is new as other arts work on the same principles but Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas give more emphasis in repetition and perfection in real time and not for show. As with dirty fighting, Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas mimics actions like spitting onto the face, tearing on the facial features. Another important mindset of a Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas practitioner is “never be touched or locked and never means “NEVER”. Learn Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas and be better than where you are now.

History of Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas in America

Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas (PAS) started in the United States of America in 1994. It was and still is under the banner of Ultimate Eskrima International co-founded by Brothers Wesley and Walter Crisostomo. It was first introduced to a few retired fire-fighter karate practitioners in Washington DC even before other Filipino martial arts groups were formed around the DC area. The small group of 6 individuals remained active until Kuya Bunal Wesley Crisostomo relocated to Palm Beach, Florida. Kuya Bunal Wesley Crisostomo was then joined by his brother Kuya Walter and they were able to form another group in Florida under the lead student Guro Craig Palenzuela They had met other practitioners in the area but contained their style because of the nature of training and fighting concepts. Their traditional style does not seem to conform to their ways and manner of training. They relocated back to Maryland and settled for good successfully pooling a good number of practitioners learning the Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas (PAS). This name is still under the umbrella of “The Ultimate Eskrima”. It is then that they had created connections with the Philippine Embassy, and many US government institutions including the Smithsonian Institute, the different military bases in and around the DC-MD-VA area. They established 3 schools in Mt Rainier, Md., Silver Spring, Md. and Springfield ,Va. Wesley and Walter man-aged their schools quite well with very dedicated and worthy students that are branded as “Palaban” or warrior. Currently, the school is managed by Palaban Lexi “Spider” Crisostomo who is able to handle the stress of train-ing, work and school schedule.

Interested students undergo the same warm up process as everyone else except the details that goes with principles used in handling the stick for maximum impact and the art that goes with each strike. Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas had develop a special training that allows each practitioner to move with ease while performing mobile offense, evasive and defense maneuvers. One has to train with Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas to understand how the art of the stick is done distinct-ly different from most arts.

Salutation of Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas (PAS)

Step 1 From any standing position, make a motion as follows: Holding the stick from the right side hip, presenting it in front on you in a diagonal angle with the tip positioned in the line of sight between you and the teacher’s eye. This show Greetings while still on guard. Left hand is half bracing the stick 4 inches from the top tip. This is still on guard for possible “bugsay” (Paddling defense / offense) when needed. This motion is simultaneous with one step backward of the right foot. Getting ready to move either side or forward or backward.Step 2 From Step 1 position, pull the right hand to the right hip while maintaining the angle of the stick and still in front of the body. This is showing respect by pulling back the weapon but still keeping it between your opponent and you. This is also a request to have your opponent bring down his weapon to a comfortable and visible position. All this motions are done while maintaining eye to eye contact.Step 3 In one motion from Step 3, pull left foot back to join the right foot and simultaneously putting the stick in front of you vertically with each hand holding the stick firmly and placed on each side of the thigh and exe-cute a bowing motion but keeping the eye glued to the the teacher’s gaze. Then after this Salutation move, it’s either keeping still to listen and learn (start of session) or to relax, turn around and leave dismissal). The senior Palaban moves forward with the left foot instead of the right mov-ing a step back and steps forward on step three to finish the salutation.Steps 1, 2 and 3 comes after the teacher yells “Mga/ Palaban” (warrior/s), “Handa” (ready), “Pugay” Salute). After each session, the rank disappears except as sign of respect as a friend or elder is established.

Established Striking Points of Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas

Numbers 1-2 (left and right chins)Numbers 3-4 (left and right hips)Number 5 thrust to the vertical center line from crotch to foreheadNumber 6-7 (left and right shoulders or clavicles)Number 8-9 (left and right sides of the knees, not the front of the knee)Number 10-11 (left and right temples)Number 12 delivered from above or frontPinakatay Arnis Sgidas generally targets these areas only as they contain bones and skin locations. 95 percent of the time, these targets are our main aim regardless of any positioning of either warrior or opponent. These targets are eyed in pre-meditated attacks and are done in succession (Sigidas) while manipulating the opponent using body mechanics. These motions are explained in action and practiced vigorously before moving on the drills intended for muscle memory and strength.

Principles and Concepts of Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas (PAS)

PAS maintains a high level of awareness. PAS keeps the body fit and well trained. PAS practices always. PAS scrutinizes all the given drills with the goal of finding flaws and bad sparring habits . PAS Listens more than anything else. PAS requires practitioners to question anything or everything that is less understood. PAS Maintains humility at all times. PAS respects all other arts regardless of its nature and style.

Mindset Before Any Sparring or Engagement

1. Relax and treat each spar as another play session 2. Maintain awareness and keen study of the opponents’ way of holding the stick and which lead foot of the opponent is stronger 3. Plan a specific attack and diverse when position of the opponent changes. 4. Fight INTELLIGENTLY using the learned principles and concepts of Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas.Swinging the stick as commonly executed by most styles is a no-no to Pinakatay Arnis Sgidas and engage only when you are ready. Always be Ready.

(4 snaps) Offense and defense at close quarters does a first strike in an overhand #1 (PAS strikes) to the opponent’s right temple followed by a short Number 12 to the forehead /clavicle area while the checkhand neutralizes the opponents weapon hand.

Guy on left bluffs a strike to the midsection but performs a snapping strike to the Achilles heel and another snapping strike inside to the face andan quick Abani-co to the toes while the check hands handles the opponents motions. This maneuver is done in a little over a second on regular sparring but can be achieved much faster through repetitive practice. Learn Pinakatay and have fun.

When the opportunity presents where guy on the left manipulates the opponents body to the side, a fast triple strikes to the back done in a half second count should inflict pains without knowing where the strikes come from.

Guy on the right executes a very basic close quarter attack using a generic one -two move .... snap to the face and a killer backhand to the knee.

All these explanations are better off doing the actual motions in real time and for that you have to learn Pinakatay Arnis Sigidas. and have fun.

Palaban (warrior) on the right executes a “Punyo” (butt end of stick) bluff to the midsection in a tight defense but instead penetrates with a face slash while the checking hand is doing a modified serrada doubled by a forehand number 8 (PAS strikes) on the inner knee and finishes the kill strike with a snap to the right temple number 10 target. This is done swiftly before the opponent can blink an eye otherwise, a counter can be established and will have to be countered with possibly Drill number 6 (not shown)

At very close engagement, one can execute a generic strike .number 1 (PAS strikes) and a short modified backhand 12 and another modified strike number 5 of drill 1 right into the right face or temple whichever is closer. This is Pinakatay Arnis Sigi-das style of fighting. This maneuver is done in 1 second or less and can be achieved by constant practice.
