The FMA Informative is very grateful to Ms. Joy Lim for providing the com-mentary and re-sources for this issue. And also Ms. Joy Lim has provided the material for all the Arnis Pasindo Invitational Arnis Tournament. It is highly recommended that if you are in the Philippines during one of these events that you make it a point to attend, and if possible compete. The FMA Informative attended the Arnis Pasindo 9th Invitation-al Arnis Tournament. It was great to see a tournament that was well organized, where safety was first, and a overall very profes-sional event.

Master Cris Pasindo “I am happy that we have reached thirteen tournaments,” Master Cris Pasindo said. “Despite the diffi-culty of putting up tournaments, we are energized by the desire for Filipino martial arts to be organized, re-spected, and acknowledged enough to be in the Olympics. It’s not even in the Southeast Asia (SEA) games now but at least we can start with our own. The rules we are using are for clearer, safer, and cleaner plays. Aside from that, it’s also a venue for athletes to hone their skills.”

In this day and age, many Filipinos still believe that the number 13 and the month of August are bad luck. Well, the Arnis Pasindo Eskrima Martial Arts group certainly doesn’t. They recently held their 13th tournament on the 9 August 2015 and consider it as better than the tournaments they organized before it. “Every tournament is different,” said Master Cris Pasindo, the organizer. “This tournament was our big-gest so far and our organizing and officiating are improving.”The morning was hot and humid but fifteen Filipino martial arts clubs arrived eager to compete.

In his message, Master Cris said, “Despite the difficulty of put-ting up tournaments, we are energized by the desire for Filipino martial arts to be organized, respected, and acknowledged enough to be in the Olympics. It’s not even in the Southeast Asia (SEA) games now but at least we can start with our own. The rules we are using are for clearer, safer, and cleaner plays. Aside from that, it’s also a venue for athletes to hone their skills. Afterall, Manny Pacquiao wouldn’t be where he is now if he didn’t have access to local matches when he was young.” And then he thanked everyone for their support.

Tournament Proper The Anyo and Combat Demonstrations came first. It was relatively shorter than before because the new rules limit a partici-pant from repeatedly participating in different Anyo categories. As usual, only Filipino Martial Arts moves were allowed. Moves that were clearly from other martial arts like Wushu, Karate, or even from band majorettes were scored low. The full contact sparring came next. Even with the kids’ division, competition was fierce. “That’s good,” the organizers said, “as long as they respect the rules and exhibit sportsmanship.” What was different with this tournament was that there were more participants aged 40 years old and above. Naturally, their skills, confidence and even their attitude were different from the younger ones, making the competitions more interesting. “Whew, that was a new experience for most of us!” said one official. He said that it helped him become more mature in his officiating.

At 7:30 PM, anxious about finishing by 8 PM (someone else will use the venue), the Awarding Ceremo-ny was done quickly with Master Cris apologizing and saying “We’ll make adjustments so we can finish earlier next time.” Overall, it was a tiring but great day playing Filipino martial arts such that both the organizers and many participants declared “We’ll never stop doing this. See you next tournament.”

End of Event

KAMAO Champion

Mon Tulfo popular multimedia man and a long time Arnis Practitioner (Ilustrisimo) competed and afterwards wrote this articleArnis’ Popular Abroad, Not Known Here By: Mon Tulfo Inquirer.net - August 13, 2015

Why does a policeman usually use a gun instead of a baton or nightstick in subduing an unruly but unarmed law violator? Because he’s not armed with a baton or nightstick. A baton or nightstick is part of the police uniform in other countries, but not here. But of what use is a baton or nightstick if its wielder is not well versed in arnis or eskrima? Arnis or Eskrima, the art of fighting with single or double sticks, is an original Filipino mar-tial art. It is said that a person who is an expert in Arnis or Eskrima can beat multiple armed opponents.

* * * In the 1950s and 1960s, uniformed policemen were issued nightsticks along with pistols. Since they carried night-sticks on patrol, they were proba-bly taught Arnis or Eskrima during their training at the police acade-my. Back then, cops on patrol arrested law violators without drawing their pistols. They arrested law offenders who resisted by clubbing them on the knees or other vital parts of the body. Now, policemen just shoot an unruly but unarmed drunk who doesn’t want to go with them to the precinct. Needless to say, the use of a gun to control a violent but unarmed law offender is patently illegal.

This should be drilled into every policeman’s head.

* * * A policeman can only use his pistol if a crime suspect is also armed and is shooting at him. Otherwise, an unarmed suspect who resists arrest can be clubbed on the knees or applied with a Judo hold to immobilize him. Each uniformed cop on beat patrol should be issued a ba-ton or nightstick, in addition to his pistol, for his weapon. Every policeman should be taught the use of baton or night-stick through arnis or eskrima.

* * * How ironic that in this country, where arnis or Eskrima originated, only very few people appreciate the Filipino martial art.

In the United States and Europe, Arnis is a craze among policemen, members of military special forces and the world of martial arts.

Arnis stands shoulder to shoulder with Karate, Aikido, Jiujitsu and Kung fu in popularity. So popular is Arnis or Eskrima in the United States as a defensive and offensive martial art that the blockbuster “300” and “Bourne Identity” movies were choreographed by Filipino Arnis teachers. The unpopularity of Ar-nis in the country showed in last

Sunday’s Arnis competition held at Quezon City Memorial Circle in Diliman, which was sponsored by the Pacindo Arnis Club. There were only a few participants. I didn’t see a single policeman among the participants.

* * * Republic Act No. 9850, a law declaring arnis as the country’s national martial art and sport, has not made the original Filipino mar-tial art popular. The law was authored by former Sen. Miguel Zubiri, him-self an arnis enthusiast who won a number of awards in many interna-tional competitions. Under the Zubiri law, the Department of Education, the Na-tional Commission for Culture and the Arts and the Philippine Sports Commission are directed to pro-mote arnis as a national sport. It seems the law has be-come a dead letter.

* * * An adjunct to Arnis or Es-krima is knife-fighting. Most Arnis Masters are experts in knife-fighting. An Arnis practitioner is also taught disarming techniques or how to wrest a weapon from an opponent. Even without his stick, an arnis expert is a formidable oppo-nent because he applies the princi-ple that a stick is just an extension of the hand.
