Theatre Programmes

There are extensive collections of programmes and playbills from plays and musicals staged between 1828 and 2005

•The core collections were donated by the late Alec Reid, who was theatre critic for The Irish Times, and by David Lass, former cataloguer of English literature at TCD Library, who attended virtually every production in Dublin over a thirty-year period from the mid-1970s

• These document the development of Dublin over eight centuries

•Dublin City Charters, 1171-1727 The later charters form the basis of municipal law in Ireland

•Medieval manuscripts, including the White Book of Dublin (Liber Albus), 13th-17th century, and the Chain Book of Dublin

•Dublin City Assembly Rolls, 1447-1841 (The Assembly Rolls together with the White Book and the Chain Book were transcribed and translated by Sir John T. and Lady Gilbert, and published as Calendar of Ancient Records of Dublin which is available in the Research Area (Stall 82)

•Moriarty CollectionPart of the Royal Dublin Fusiliers’ Association Archive, it contains over 180 letters written by Jeremiah Moriarty, a travelling magistrate in India during the 1850s and 1860s. These offer a personal account by an Irishman of life and society in the sub-continent during a time of conflict and change

Archbishop Marsh’s Library

•When Archbishop Marsh arrived in Dublin to take up his post as Provost of Trinity College, he set about creating a reading space for “graduates and gentlemen”. Marsh’s Library (built in 1701) was the result of this project and became Ireland’s first public library

•The library contains over 25,000 books relating to the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, covering medicine, law, science, travel, navigation, mathematics, music, surveying and classical literature. The collections include the story of the first blood transfusion done in Ireland – which was from a lamb to a boy! The transfusion was not a success

•Marsh’s Library is one of the very few 18th century buildings left in Dublin that is still being used for its original purpose




Major collections:

•Edward Stillingfleet (1635-1699), Bishop of Worcester. His library was purchased in 1705 by Marsh. It was regarded as the finest private library in England in the later part of the 17th century

•Archbishop Marsh (1638-1713) left all his books to the library. He was interested in science, mathematics, music, oriental languages and rabbinical and medieval writers

• Dr. Elias Bouhéreau (1643-1719), first Keeper of the Library. Bouhéreau was a Huguenot refugee who fled from France in 1685, managing to bring his books with him. His collection constitutes a unique source for the study of Calvinism in 17th

century France

• John Stearne (1660-1745), Bishop of Clogher, bequeathed his books to Marsh’s in 1745. Amongst them is a book which is considered one of the most beautiful in the library: Cicero’s “Letters to his Friends” printed in Milan in 1472

•Joly Collection – rich in Irish material including rare books and pamphlets, maps, music, topographical prints and some important manuscripts. There are first editions of many seventeenth-century Irish authors.Dr Jaspar Robert Joly was one time Vicar General of the diocese of Tuam, Killala and Achonry

•Swift Collection – This collection consists of 500 copies of early editions of the works of Jonathan Swift

•Yeats Collection – in 2002, the personal library of William Butler Yeats was acquired by the National Library of Ireland. The content of the Library is described in a book by Edward O’Shea called “A descriptive catalogue of W.B. Yeats’s library” (Call Number HIB 828.912 YEAg M51)

•The Periodicals collection of the National Library of Ireland contains many interesting and often overlooked publications, dating from the eighteenth century to the present day

•The National Library newspaper collection is one of the most heavily used collections in the National Library. It covers titles published from the mid-seventeenth century to the present day. Irish titles are the primary focus of the collection. The policy is to collect all newspapers with substantial news content published in Ireland and Northern Ireland, including free newspapers

Among the writers whose papers are well represented are Brendan Behan, Christy Brown, Maria Edgeworth, Patrick Kavanagh, Benedict Kiely, George Moore, Kate O’Brien, James Plunkett and Colm Toibin

Of particular importance are the large collection of papers of W.B. Yeats presented by his family, and the James Joyce/Paul Léon Papers presented in the early forties and opened to the public in 1992

Among the playwrights whose papers are well represented are Samuel Beckett, Brien Friel, Hugh Leonard, Tom MacIntyre, Liam MacUistin, Seán O'Casey, George Bernard Shaw, Richard Brinsley Sheridan and John Millington Synge

There are also manuscripts relating to theatres, such as the Abbey, the Dublin Gate, the Focus, the Lantern and the Project

•There are up to 100,000 works in the Prints and Drawings collection including a very rich collection of original drawings relating to Irish literary and theatrical society

•This is comprised principally of material acquired by diarist and collector Joseph Holloway. The original drawings collected by Holloway are of well-known theatrical and literary figures by various artists. Writers such as W.B. Yeats, George Bernard Shaw and Lennox Robinson are depicted

The National Library's photographic collections comprise approximately 300,000 photographs, the vast majority of which are Irish. While most of the collections are historical there are also some contemporary collections

• The photographic collections of the National Library of Ireland are now housed in the National Photographic Archive in the Temple Bar area of Dublin

•Initiated in 1996 by the National Theatre Society Limited

•Primary function is to acquire, preserve and make accessible relevant archival records illustrating every aspect of the activities of the National Theatre Society Limited

• A corollary of this function is to acquire and preserve archival material relating to the history and development of theatre in Ireland and so provide a direct context for the history and development of the Abbey Theatre

• RTÉ is the National Public Service Broadcasting Organisation. The radio service was inaugurated in 1926 and the television service in 1961

• The RTÉ archive collections consist of a selection of news, current affairs, music and programme material, and a large selection of unique archive material

• There are 3 main archives: television, radio and stills…




Major collections:RTÉ Television

•Since the inauguration of television in 1961, the collection has grown to upwards of 160,000 hours of film and video content, comprising of news, current affairs, features, entertainment, drama and a wide variety of other television broadcast materials. Additionally there is a premier selection of Irish interest film material acquired from international news agencies and local sources dating from about 1913. There are also a growing number of smaller film and video collections deposited with RTÉ for preservation, restoration and digitisation from a variety of film and programme makers of the 20th century

•The RTÉ Television Libraries and Archives holdings are divided between the off-site conservation and digitisation centre, and the broadcast libraries at Montrose




Major collections:RTÉ Sound Archive

•RTÉ is the curator of the largest single collection of audio-visual archives in Ireland

• RTÉ Sound Archive holds or has access to over 150,000 hours of programmes dating back to 1926 produced by four national radio stations

• In the absence of a National Sound Archive, the RTÉ Sound Archives fulfills this role holding the audio history of the state with much of the collection comprising of news, current affairs, sport, music and other social, cultural and historical material

• In addition to material produced by RTÉ, the collection also includes small deposits of locally produced or acquired interviews and recordings

•RTÉ Stills Library holds an estimated 2.8 million photographic images acquired from a number of sources

•There are a number of historically important collections that date from the early twentieth century. These collections cover a wide range of social and political events such as the 1916 Rising, the War of Independence, the Civil War, the visit of George V to Ireland and the 1932 Eucharistic Congress

• The Body in the Library – the great detectives 1841 to 1941

22 January to 15 June 2009

The detective novel is a genre which generates great popular interest and also growing academic and critical attention. The library’s collections across the past two centuries reflect the development of this form of imaginative writing. This exhibition will illustrate the origins of the detective story in the mid 19th century, the growth in popularity of fictional heroes such as Sherlock Holmes, Father Brown and Hercule Poirot. There will be a focus on the first golden age of crime writing in the 1920s and 1930s
