There will be a special edition coming out in the middle of June to show the great achievements against the District Plan, but this is my last lead article. I’d like to say it has been an enormous privilege to be your District Governor... and I'm proud to say that I've been able to visit everyone of the 54 Clubs in the District this year either for a Charter, an Official Club visit, or to support an event. In addition I've attended a meeting of the East Midlands Internet Club, a meeting of the Nottingham West Pride Branch Club, Sleaford and District Lionesses Fashion Show and the formation of the Southwell Minster Leos Club. Everywhere I’ve been I have been impressed by the commitment, hard work, positivity and dedication to our motto of "We Serve". It looks like in 2015/16 the Clubs in District 105E will raise over £500,000 for good causes. This is a staggering sum and shows what a force our organisation is in the East Midlands and Lincolnshire. A huge number of individuals and organisations have benefited from the fantastic work and service that has been put in by people right across the District. I think its great to see the progress that has been made by Clubs over the last 12 months. Membership is up. We have a greater profile. Women have been admitted to some Clubs for the first time. New projects have been developed and initiated. We've really embraced social media and this has improved communication. We have had a team of Club Presidents that have led their Clubs with a desire to move the organisation forward and members who have responded. As we move into our Centennial I have great hope for Lions in the Future... to all the District Cabinet... to every Club... and to every Member. Kind regards that we will continue to make a difference throughout the World that we will continue to make a difference in Great Britain - but above all that Lions will continue to make a huge difference in East Midlands and Lincolnshire Is it really almost a year since this happy picture was captured as, following International Convention, DG Paul and Ann returned for their Welcome Home party? DISTRICT GOVERNOR’S WIFE’S APPEAL

Lion Ann Stafford

DON’T BURN THAT BRA! ... use it to provide additional SUPPORT just where it’s needed

Hello again to everyone.

As DG Paul’s year as Governor comes to a close I want to thank all theClubs who have made such generous donations for my chosen charity –The MS Society. I am humbled that you have given so much through theyear and I know that the society is extremely grateful .One lady I met from the Lincoln branch of the Society didn’t believe mewhen I said I would raise money for them. I’m delighted that, with your generosity and support, I canprove her wrong. I have asked the society how they have spent the funds already sent to them andwill let you know the details as soon as I can.But whilst our year is nearly over, the problems, pain and fear of those diagnosed with MS will notbe over. It is something they will have to cope with for the rest of their lives. That may mean notbeing able to work any longer, loss of independence, constant pain or life in a wheelchair. I wouldask you not to forget about The MS Society and do all you can as Lions to help and support yourlocal Branch. Finally I would like to thank all those clubs DG Paul and Ihave visited over the last three years. The company hasbeen wonderful, the food excellent and the flowersbeautiful. It has been a pleasure to be the wife of the DG.

Thank you.

Lioness Anne Moyes of had broughtthis fact to the attention of her fellow Lionesses before sheset off on a trip to Zimbabwe. Lioness Anne was going fora few weeks to help her cousin, Forgiveness Myers, whoteaches children with learning disabilities at the BrydenCounty School in Chegetu. Her fellow Lionesses donatedbras for her to take with her. Forgiveness (pictured right withthe bras) was overwhelmed with this generous donation andnow (with the blessing of the Lionesses) plans to sell thegarments, at a very low price, to fellow students and usethe proceeds to help fund her own college fees...

In February 1945, Lions’ founder Melvin Jones gathered with leaders of other national groups to meetwith Secretary of the Treasury Henry Morgenthau Jr. and Assistant Secretary of State for Public AffairsArchibald MacLeish to discuss forming a United Nations. In April Lions headquarters asked clubs tohold a United Nations week to show support for the initiative.

As World War II raged leaders of the AlliedNations looked beyond the end of theconflict and held talks on the formation of aWorld body for preserving peace... an entitythat would be stronger than the toothlessLeague of Nations. Lions rallied behind theidea. In 1943, at their InternationalConvention in Cleveland, Lions endorsed aU.S. House of Representatives resolutioncalling for an International peacekeepingmechanism once the fighting ended.

Lion Clubs International was one of the first nongovernmental organisations(NGO) invited to assist in drafting the UN Charter.Lion Melvin Jones, along with International President D.A. Skeen of SaltLake City, Utah, and future International President Fred W. Smith of Ventura,California, helped to formulate the NGO section of the charter, participatingin developing the UN’s humanitarian mission... On June 26th1945 the UnitedNations charter was signed by the representatives of 50 countries. Two years later in 1947, in recognition of the importance of Lions Clubs toits mission, the United Nations gave Lions consultative status with the UNEconomic and Social Council, committed to the welfare of people Worldwide. For generations, Lions and the UN have shared many common goals andhave worked together to further peace and prosperity. Each year Lions and the UN celebrate their relationship. From 1978, LionsDay with the UN has called together leaders from government, businessand the nonprofit sector to explore solutions to pressing global needs. Theannual event features a keynote address by a recognised World leader, expert panel discussions and, since 1989, the awards ceremony for thewinners of the Lions International Peace Poster Contest which encouragesyoung people to express their perspectives on peace. Lions Day ispunctuated with a reception for UN diplomats, Lions, speakers and gueststo celebrate this special and enduring relationship. This symbolic recognistion is also a part of our own Lions Calendar. Lionsin the British Isles and Ireland have held a Lions Day with the United Nationssince 1994 and since 2000 it has been held in the Houses of Parliament inLondon. Sponsored by a Member of Parliament (who is usually also a Lion)it is addressed by speakers from Government, UN Agencies and Lions ClubsInternational. As in the USA, here it is also a tradition for the winner of theLions Peace Poster Competition to be introduced and presented with theirprize.

UPDATE E: June 2016 - Page 4

We’re retaining our BRIGHT IDEAS feature in Update E. However, this totally relies on YOU seizing an opportunity to share the secrets behind YOUR INNOVATIVE IDEAS.

Please let the Update E Editor know about events and activities that have been undertaken following some spark of brilliance in your Club... join in the fun, enlighten others and reap the rewards. This month we have stories behind not just one, but THREE Bright Ideas... ( also see next page )

raised a gigantic £1300 from an Elvis Tribute night and decided to present £1000 of it to the Cancer Research UK charity. BUT cleverlythey went along to their local CancerResearch Shop to make the presentation. The Lionesses were given a tour of the shopand were amazed to learn just how muchwork goes into preparing a donated itembefore it can go on sale on the shop floor.Making the presentation at the shop to theShop Manager encouraged attendance ofthe Local Press and, by donating the moneyin this way, the cheque is now prominentlydisplayed in the shop window... possiblyencouraging more cash donations for theCancer Research charity and definitelyproviding great publicity for the Lionesses.

That’s Novel! Reading Chair donated...

...and Cheque this out

No matter what your age it’s great tolisten to a story being told... So - howbright is this idea to remember threefounder members of a Lions Club(particularly as one was named 'Bright')?

have recentlyteamed with the staff and Rangers at theBrocks Hill Centre who wanted to actiontheir idea for a number of projects toprovide visitors with a more enjoyableexperience. Without funding nothing couldmove forward but this was just the sort ofproject the club had funds for!The first stage was to design and constructa 'reading chair' in an area of woodlandwhere schools, literary groups andindividuals could sit and read quietly or beread to.During the year picnic tables designed forwheel chair users along with their families

Judy Day (left) and Yvonne Kershaw try out the chair (a memorial to theirpast husbands Lions Service). Looking at the size of the chair the firstpublic reading should be 'Gullivers Travels'

and friends will be added, and finally a modern wooden sculpture, using wood from the Centre, willbe completed to give extra visual interest to the area. When the projects are completed the club will unveil a plaque remembering the names of clubCharter Members Adrian Day, Roger Kershaw and David Bright.

Share your BRIGHT IDEA with fellow Lions. Please contact Update E Editor Lion Gordon Davison E mail: [email protected] Telephone: 01724 762036 or 07711 153080

constantlyreceive strange requests for helpfrom many deserving causes, butrecently one stood out from the rest.A request to help unload a furniturevan on a Saturday afternoon wasvery quickly answered by the Club. Why? Because the request camefrom fellow Lions from Oxford whowere moving into the locality.Lions Stuart Milsom and LeonieSeymore-Milsom sent an email tothe Blaby Lions secretary asking forhelp and promising tea and biscuitsand a fish supper if the job draggedon.

Lions help Lions on the move...

Lion Rick, the youngest kept on wondering why he ended up carrying all the heavy boxes whilst LionRoger the oldest member kept sneaking off with the lightest boxes. The bad back brigade did theirbest under the circumstances and supervised the others. In the end the whole van was emptied in2 hours just before the heavens opened.A grateful Lion Stuart said... ‘Its amazing. The kindness and generosity of Lions exists all over theworld and this proves it. It took one email and my house move was made so much simpler’

On the move Lions Joe Hackett (on the back of the lorry) RickBaverstock, Leonie Seymour-Milsom, Roger Smith and Stuart Milsom

...continued from page 4 - This month’s 3rd Bright Idea

Great Idea planted have adopted an event which

doubles as a part environmental and part fund-raising initiative. For a second successive year they’ve successfully staged their and raised £400. People are encouraged to bring spare plants and seeds to donate to the Lions to sell, At the same time there is the encouragement to buy something for their own garden which someone else has nurtured. The event takes on a pleasing garden theme with Cake Stall, Book Stalls and also a Trash and Treasure stall!

(friends of Lions members) June Higgon and Peter Taylor (a local man who certainly knows his "onions") were also on hand to offer tips and gardening advice... All in all a great event where...

RETFORD RIDE TO SUCCESS have, over the years,

dabbled in a number of cyclingevents, but this year a particularproposition looked quite enticing.Family members are often quiteinvolved in Lions events and thisevent was just one such occasion.Dominic Battersby (son of Lion JohnBattersby) offered to set up an eventwhich Lions could support and helpto manage and also benefit from theprofit the event would provide...So the a event(importantly a ride and not a race)was adopted.

It was decided to engage British Cycling to oversee the event which included dealing with entrantsand money and providing guidance and insurance. Dominic has a cycling business and is a keencyclist himself and so the technical ‘nuts and bolts’ of the event were not a worry for the Lions Club. The event was announced in January and took place on Sunday 17th April... the cost to each riderwas a modest £11. Almost 300 riders entered from all over the country took part (with a good numberof ladies) and an entrant age range from 12 to 70 plus. The overlying emphasis was to create a happy friendly experience for all and Lions obviously did thatwell as the riders set out on a 70 mile course which had been carefully set to take in the attractiveNorth Notts countryside and some interesting locations.

Some of the 300 riders gathered for the start of the event

Input from Lions came mainly on the day, setting up and managing registration andthe staggered start. All checkpoints hadat least 2 Lions offering sustenance andencouragement. A Good Food village pubprovided the lunch stop and a Velo cafesupported both start and finish.Lions arranged sponsorship for water, bananas and ice cream at the checkpointsand, most importantly really good weather. After more than 20,000 rider miles therewas extremely positive feedback.Retford Lions were delighted to acceptalmost £3000 for their Charity account. And now plans are already underway fornext year when the Club hope to attract500 riders to the event.

President Philip Moult receives the event proceeds from Dominic Battersby

When recentlycelebrated their 25th Charter Anniversarythey made the occasion just a little bit morespecial by presenting three longstandingmembers with MJF awards.Pictured with Lion President Sue Carter areLions Bob Wilmot (far left) Marilyn Gravesand Denis Cator.Hearty congratulations to each one of thetrio... the awards are indeed well deserved.

UPDATE E: June 2016 - Page 7

Many thanks to Clubs for responding to my urgent request for information about their Centennialactivities... And I must congratulate Sleaford Lions for their comprehensive plan for 2017 events. Here are some of the highlights of their plan: A Centennial Officer is to be appointed. The Club President for 2016/2017 has secured a place in the Great North Run to raise funds for

the District project... and at their burger stand at the Sleaford carnival in July they will be joinedby two owners of Hearing dogs who will advertise the run. A Just Giving site has been set up (watch out for reports in ). Business cards will be

distributed giving details of this site and we will be submitting articles for our local paper. During Lions Awareness week the Annual Race Night and earlier in October they’ll run their

bookstall at Sleaford Farmers’ Market and invite Guide Dogs and their owners, blindfold localdignitaries invite them to be guided around the market. Each of these events will have the 100years banner and pull up displayed. The club have secured a medium package of trees from the Woodland Trust to be delivered in

November and have permission from the Council to plant in a small wood. We will have help froma local gardening club but also hope to enlist the help from youth organisations.

The Club’s 2017 Challenge is to specifically focus on activities to raise the awareness of the club. This will possibly include and a event.

So... Sleaford seem as though they are getting to grips with what they want to achieve next year...Hopefully many more Clubs will join in and organise Centenary Events that will lift our profile... Let’sall see what we can do to make the most of this special year and great opportunity.
