Fellow LionsFirstly I'd like to thank those clubs who have made generous donations tomy chosen charity. I know that fundraising is not getting any easier thesedays so I appreciate your making these hard earned donations forThe MS Society.I thought you may like to know some of the ways your donations can help The MS Society.Support Grants - stair lifts, wheelchairs , car conversions can be made possible where local MSbranches don't have sufficient funds.Helpline - The society provides a Short Break and Activities Fund in order to help those struggling toafford to pay for such experiences. These funds are used for:

At a Charter dinner recently I heard how members of the club had taken some wheelchair bound MSsufferers for a 'walk' in the local park. My thanks to Edwinstowe and Dukeries Lions. This is just onemore way we as Lions can serve our local communiy and support those affected by MS.Thank you for all you are doing.

Lions do more to keep Air Ambulance flying

It seems the Lincolnshire and NottinghamshireAir Ambulance helicopter is being featured in thepages of nearly as often as our DistrictGovernor. That’s because Lions across theDistrict are doing so much to help ensure thatthe Air Ambulance team can continue with theirvtal service.

were the latest Clubto lend their support when some of theirmembers were fortunate to be able meet the AirAmbulance crew. The had at the HarbyCountry Show and Lions were able to enjoy thereal pleasure of presenting a cheque for £550 –some of the profits of the Club’s recentBottesford Open Gardens event.

It was decided to offer membership of the scheme to the general public and 8 trained volunteers werein place when the scheme first went live. Now CFR volunteers are deployed (at the same time asParamedics or Ambulance staff ) to incidents suitable to their level of training. These may includeCardiac arrests, Heart attacks, Angina attacks, Diabetic emergencies, Anaphylactic shock, Strokes,Breathing difficulties, falls and trauma. On some occasions team members have been sent to backup EMAS staff at other incidents. One incident involved a 21 year old student, (a CFR in our scheme) being sent to a 1 day old babywho had stopped breathing and was turning blue. He was first on the scene and inverted the babyover his knee, massaged the baby’s back and removed fluid and mucus that was obstructing thebaby’s airway. The baby started breathing normally again. This was done before a Paramedic,Ambulance crew and Air Ambulance Doctor arrived at the scene of the incident. The Air AmbulanceDoctor said that without the intervention of the CFR the baby would have died before the arrival of theother emergency services. Following graduation this CFR has now moved but has applied to join theLondon Ambulance Service. This incident alone surely justifies the efforts of CFR volunteers and theexpense of purchasing of equipment by Shepshed Lions Club to set up the scheme.EMAS are unable to supply defibrillators and other equipment, but do supply disposable items suchas masks, gloves, bandages, suction pumps and other items including oxygen. Shepshed Lions Clubpurchased a defibrillator, kit bag and other items to set up the scheme. Since then other fundraisingactivities, sponsorship and grants, have enabled the purchase of other equipment and now 4 full CFRresponse kits are in use. Currently 18 fully trained CFR’s cover Shepshed, Loughborough and thesurrounding villages.Such has been the success of the venture that EMAS have now supplied, and funded, a Skoda Fabiasaloon car marked out in EMAS ambulance livery. This has a radio and satellite navigation device foruse by volunteers on call.Operating the scheme has had no affect on the Club’s ability to maintain its normal fundraising effortsmeaning that other local causes have not suffered as a result of this demanding venture... It’s all clearevidence that Shepshed Lions and CFR volunteers epitomize our “We Serve” motto. If you require further information on how to set up a scheme please contact Lion President Bob Lilley01509 508265, 07585 772902 or e-mail: [email protected].

A proposal to purchase a localcommunity defibrillator was putforward by Lion Bonita Irish butfollowing detailed research ClubMembers made a decision to dosomething much more ambitious. They embarked on a project toestablish a Community FirstResponder Scheme (CFR) in theTown to work in conjunction withEast Midlands Ambulance Service(EMAS). The EMAS CommunityResponder Management wereimmediately delighted that Lionswere keen to support them.Above - First responders Andrew Barrass, Barry Cake, Jane Johnson, Gina Wright,

We are still running ourfeature with the aim of encouraging allClubs and individual members to shareinnovative ideas with others... Hopefullyyou will submit one of your ideas:

courtesy of DG Lion Paula prize for the best idea is up for grabs,so...

Bright Ideas don’t always need to be complicated or difficultto apply... in fact, often simple ideas can turn out be amongthe very best... this is a great example! Our November picture shows how cleverlyrecently chose a site for an event advertising poster.A few miles away from the event venue this busy level crossingwas an ideal spot to the forthcoming attraction.Frequently there are cars queued waiting to cross the railwayline at this spot and so very few drivers, or passengers, wouldfail to take in the information given. It would seem that this poster (coupled with other publicity forthe event) was successful. Winterton Lions are reportingexcellent attendance for the two days of the Steam andVintage Rally. Although accounts still have to be finalised theClub is confidently predicting that their efforts were verysuccessful both financially and in terms of raising awarenessof Lions Clubs.

Regular readers will know I’ve tried to encourage storiesof encounters with Lions (UK or overseas) whentravelling on holiday or business. So... please forgivethe use here of but I wanted to sharethese thoughts. They concern encounters with LionsClubs and also fit into our thinking too.Earlier this year as I arrived at Rome’s Ciampino AirportI was pleased to find illuminated displays (includingthose pictured). A fantastic eye catching way ofpublicising Lions - and I understand there is a possibilityof similar displays being seen is some UK airports during the coming year. Signs set on the approach roads to towns are a common site in many countries but I was really pleased to find this one... on one side welcoming travellers and on the reverse side wishing them a pleasant journey. We were in the Sierra Madre mountains in Mexico on the perimeter of Mascota, a small traditional Mexican town. Both of these incidences served as reminders of how International and huge our Lions organisation really is. It also reinforces for me the feeling of pride that comes from being a Lion. During the time of Jane Hall’s Guide Dogs Appeal (herchosen charity during Lion Alan’s year as DG) a promisewas made by Ilkeston President Lion Ray Birch. Heundertook to ensure that during his year as President afurther donation to Guide Dogs would be made... So - tworepresentatives from the Guide Dogs organisation (alongwith ‘Lincoln’ a Guide Dog in training) attended the Club’sCharter to collect a fantastic £3,000 boost for their charity..

Pictured with Lion President are Guide Dogs representatives BarbaraHolbrook (with 10 month old Lincoln) and Sheila Gillott .

Lion Elaine Kitchen who is coordinating this appeal says...‘I would be very pleased if your Club would consider raising money at an event and donating it to this worthy cause. Please send your donations to District Treasurer,Lion Paula Mellows, who is collating all money raised for the Centenary. We will make sure thatprogress is recorded on a regular basis... So, come on - Who is going to be the first to donate?’

Hearing Dogs to mark 100 years...

Throughout MD105 Lions have beenmaking the commitment to mark ourCentenary in 2017 by raising funds tosupport Hearing Dogs. The target is foreach District to raise £18,000 which isthe cost of buying and training a dog.

At the recent Conninsby Show took some honours thanks to enlisting the services of John Travolta...After a ‘straw poll’ the Lions’ John Travolta entry (or Danny to give him his character name fromGrease) captured a creditable second place in the Scarecrow Competition.Meanwhile - not one, not two, but three Hampers drew people to the Club’s PR stall which, for thesecond consecutive year won the Bill Edgar Memorial Trophy for best stall. Message in a Bottle andPlugsters were distributed... all in all a very successful PR day for the club.Pictures show Lions Peter Green and Niel Marshall manning the PR Stall (complete with hampsers)whilst Lion Judy Gibbons takes a crafty opportunity to get just a little closer to John T.

I spoke too about how our club had organiseda concert to raise money for Hope for Tomorrow and are organising another in November. Herr EckartPreen, Managing Director of WFG in Krefeld, joined in the conversation and it transpired he was amember of the Krefeld Lions Club. We discussed a concert they had held which raised €10,000 forcharity.  Some of the UK and German delegates were interested in hearing about the Lions and thework that is done internationally as well as for local communities.’
