BACK TO INDEXINTRODUCTION

DIGITAL CITIES The Summer School is a part of the Innovation and Entrepreneurship (I&E) education component of EIT Digital. The principal objective is to teach you how to transform knowledge into innovative business ideas, and how to turn these ideas into concrete business proposals. The Summer School is intended for students between the first and second year of the Master Programme

The digital transformation of cities takes place through centralised, participative and collaborative interactions among city actors: government, city service providers, industry, and citizens. Mobility, information and security are the anchor points for the innovations supported by the EIT Digital Action Line on Digital Cities. A multidisciplinary approach including service design, urbanism, and social sciences is used to provide an accurate understanding of the concrete problems cities are facing, and the means to overcome them through the development of sustainable business models.

Mature technologies will be summoned in products or services allowing a quick deployment on the market and addressing today’s cities’ problems and challenges. Cities will provide criteria and foster iterative improvement of user experience. In order to be able to gain commercial positions quickly, these products or services need to be ready for the market, albeit as beta versions.

PREDICTIVE ANALYTICS FOR DIGITAL CITIESPredictive Analytics play a role in cities on several important domains: citizens’ participation, contamination prevention, risk management, public and private transportation management, etc. Predictive analytics offer concrete tools for transforming field data into strategic and operational actions. Thanks to new business models, and inserted in sustainable economic frames, these can be a source of true value for individuals, groups, and institutions.

OVERALL APROACH

During these two weeks you will work in teams on concrete projects. A significant part of the programme will be dedicated to team building, enhancing entrepreneurial spirit, setting business and start-up finance basis, and pitch coaching.

The first week will introduce the topic of Digital Cities through several business cases; you will explore the market and user profiles, as well as product and service concepts, and the whole will be complemented with company visits.

The second week will focus on drafting your business project proposals and preparing pitch presentations. Throughout this week, you will address the technical and technological aspects, perform market studies and competitor analysis, and explore the social and usability aspects of the proposed business projects. The latter has to be an ICT product or service, related to one of the use cases.

Each team will present its project to the evaluation panel, which will select a winning team in regard of the quality of the proposals and their pitch presentations.

Guidelines on Methods & ObjectivesStudents will work together on a business development process related to a socially relevant theme. Additional objectives include: fostering a community of students coming from different universities; and creating interaction between them and other companies and start-ups.

LEARNING METHODS

Topics will be introduced through lectures, business cases presentations, tutorials and workshops. Enhancing entrepreneurial skills and specific business capacities from idea to a clear business proposition remains the key objective of the Summer School. All I&E assignments will be completed through teamwork, under the guidance of experienced business coaches, mentors and lecturers. In addition, guest start-up leaders will share their experience with students.Learning will prioritize hands-on assignments with focus on: business project work, team building, (personal) networking, cultural exchange, interactions between ethics and society, and global societal and business trends.

The practical approach will ensure:

• A balanced combination of theory and practice

• Horizontal & vertical approaches;

• A combination of lectures, tutorials, mentoring, visits, and teamwork

• A preparation for speaking in public and for project presentation

• Social events to identify project ideas.

Business casesThe cases provided during the Summer School are provided by the CLC local and European ecosystem. Cases will be assigned on the first day of the Summer School. Five generic business cases will be proposed to participants. (See the business cases booklet.)

Team workThe project work will be done in groups of 5-6 students Teamwork is an essential part of the learning process as it gives students the opportunity to work within culturally diverse groups and to practice peer-to-peer learning.

Since the Summer School has also invited external (non-EIT) Master and PhD students to participate, special attention will be given to the leveraging of diversities: i.e. teams mixing EIT with non-EIT students, and maximizing cultural differences within teams while keeping an even gender balance. Master students from non-EIT Masters may have more specific domain knowledge but in general they may not have the required business background and training.

EIT Masters and non-EIT Masters students will be mixed within the groups so that each group has enough I&E and technical expertise on board. A tailored approach will be implemented by a specialized trainer to ensure a process of team-building where interests and competences of the students are harmonized with a balanced composition of the team membership.

Working places for groups will be assigned by the organising team

ECTSThe I&E Summer School is worth 4 ECTS (112 hours) aiming to rehearse – through a hands-on approach - the knowledge received in I&E courses (Basics and Business Development Lab – BDLab), which provide students with an introduction to entrepreneurial thinking and behaviour, proactive spirit of innovation, business processes, high-tech ventures marketing, business model generation techniques and start-up finance.

The principal objectives are:

• to demonstrate the importance of predictive analytics applications in Digital Cities;

• to point out the market needs and business opportunities in the area;

• to teach students how to transform the gained knowledge into innovative business ideas;

• to mentor teams on how to turn these ideas into concrete business proposals;

• to coach students on how to present their pitches to investment companies.

Follow-up opportunities for the selected project:

The team presenting the best project proposal will benefit from:

• Communication on each of the wining team students on the EIT Digital website;

• Invitation of one team member to the next EIT Digital Master School kick-off;

• Project development support plan during their study visit to discuss case-by-case based on specific project needs (coaching/mentoring and support from EIT Digital BDA);

• Depending on conditions of the Exit-year University, EIT Digital Master School students may be offered further support;

• The opportunity to do their Exit year I&E Study course as a follow-up of their Summer School project (subject to conditions).

Social Activities Social and team aspects are considered crucial for the successful completion of the summer school. The programme includes time for entertainment, relaxation, and cultural visits. It is recommended that students restrict alcohol consumption and respect the time-table of organized social activities.

BUSINESS CASES TEAM WORK

As previously mentioned, the Summer School consists of lectures for academics and practitioners, but also of a project-based task.

During this two-week event, students will work in a competitive environment, setting on a project with 4-5 other students. Business cases will cover applications in mobility and be about the smart use of information and data in an urban environment. The cases have been provided by national and international entrepreneurs facing problems in developing their activities.

Students will have the opportunity to meet those entrepreneurs in order to better understand and figure out their needs. The emphasis of teamwork relies on developing a solution to solve an initial problem, providing expected or new services, and developing an associated marketing strategy and business plan.

The results of the project will be presented on the last day and will be graded by a business panel. Students will present their projects in a pitch session.

Evaluation Criteria

EVALUATION OF EIT DIGITAL STUDENTS

Since for the EIT Digital Master School students, the I&E summer school course is a regular course, it will be graded. The student projects are graded on two aspects (50% of the score each):

• The business proposal as presented in front of a business panel (independent company representatives, business consultants, entrepreneurs, complemented with EIT Digital Action Line and BDA representatives, the local I&E coordinator, and representative(s) of the summer school business coaches/mentors),

• An individual written report (only for the EIT Digital students and external students who can integrate the 4 ECTS with their home university), to submit within two weeks after the Summer School.

The business panel will only judge the quality and feasibility of the business proposal (“will it fly?”).

The written report will document the project, the motivations for taking particular directions and decisions, and the team process, including the contribution of the student.

EVALUATION OF NON EIT DIGITAL STUDENTS

Since business proposals will be prepared in teams, non-EIT Digital students will also be concerned by their evaluation. For this category of students, it is not mandatory to draft a report as it is for the EIT Digital students, , but if they decide to write it and depending on its quality, they may receive 4 ECTS in their own university.

STÉPHANE PÉAN DIGITAL CITIES ACTION LINE LEADER EIT DIGITAL EUROPEAN INSTITUTE OF INNOVATION AND TECHNOLOGY

Stéphane Péan has been appointed Digital Cities Action Line Leader at EIT Digital, the leading European open innovation organisation driven by a go-to-market mindset. Prior to joining EIT Digital, he held various roles in automotive and future mobility, particularly as international Project Man-ager at Toyota Motor Corporation. He previously held positions as Consul-tant in collaboration with IHS Markit Automotive, Analyst at PSA Group in its Tokyo branch and Head of ITS France. He holds a Master’s Degrees in Urbanism from Sciences Po Paris and in Intelligent Transportation Sys-tems from École des Ponts (ParisTech), as well as an MBA in Global Busi-ness & Leadership from Globis University in Japan.

Stéphane will present a business case onnew services for shared con-nected vehicles. New sharing mobility services have been expanding in major cities as well as middle sized ones. The vehicles are usually con-nected with very basic telematics options but only to support the opera-tion (payment, fleet management, etc.). It would be a great interest to de-velop an embedded solution that provides contextual information (virtual or augmented reality expected). The services could target small business-es, points of interest and events (e-tourism) or social innovations at large.

MAXIME BRICET FORMER STUDENT OF THE RENNES1 ENGINEERING SCHOOL WITH AN IOT SPECIALIZATION

“I had the opportunity to do my final year internship at Incube, where I took part in an EIT Digital call (MyCarlot).

This project aims to set up a smart parking system for niche markets (electric vehicles, delivery, taxis ...) focusing primarily on places for people with reduced mobility. Our solution will be based on artificial intelligence to allow a prediction so that our users can optimize their trips in advance.

According to reports from associations for people with disabilities, it would be necessary to equip disabled carholders with a tool which allows them to visualize the available places in the city, and which is reliable and easy to use. On the other hand, the objective would be to equip the dedicated parking lots to know their occupancy status. In case of high demand and lack of available places, the system could also allow a change of state of one or more places available in the area, from “free for all” to “only for disabled”.

We are deploying our system on all the reduced mobility parking lots of the Rennes 1 university campus in order to test our solution. This experiment will serve as a demonstrator for Rennes metropolis and other possible clients.” [email protected]

Saint Malo “corsair city”, capital of the sea, a jewel of the Emerald Coast... whatever adjectives attributed to him, Saint-Malo has always been, throughout its history, the appointment of all adventure. The city invites you to the heart of its ramparts, in the footsteps of famous travellers and under the protective gaze of the forts of Grand Bé and Petit Bé. Grand Bé is a tidal island near Saint-Malo, France. It is located at the mouth of the Rance River, a few hundred metres from the walls of Saint-Malo. At low tide the island can be reached on foot from the nearby Bon-Secours beach. On the island are the remains of an ancient fort. Petit Bé is a tidal island near the city of Saint-Malo, France, close to the larger island of Grand Bé. At low tide one can walk to the island from the nearby Bon-Secours beach. Of all the best things to do in Saint Malo, one of the top activities is to sit, stay and watch the waves roll in at the beach. ↗ www.ville-saint-malo.fr/tourisme
