Welcome to MUNOTH 2015!

This brochure should serve you as a guide through the coming days. Please take the time to browse through it, as it contains much useful information.

The conference theme, “Adapting to an Evolving World: Globalization, Governance, Geopolitics” is incorporated into all committees, and we invite you to explore the different angles of your topics. Whether it be in developing arguments, creating resolutions or writing press-releases: be innovative!

Although expectations are high for the level of debate, the aim of this weekend is not solely related to finding solutions to some of the world’s most pressing issues. Ultimately, we think MUNOTH will be best if you take the opportunity to socialize with our vast amount of international participants. Indulging both academically and socially is the optimal way to take advantage of MUNOTH 2015.

We wholeheartedly hope you will enjoy the conference. If at any time there is something we can do to enhance your experience, we would love to hear it from you.

Opening Ceremony Keynote Speakers

Christophe Verhellen

Despite the fact that Mr. Christophe Verhellen has background in movie-making and TV production (he even worked as a freelance director in the late 1990s), his most recent career has been oriented in a different direction. Mr. Verhellen serves as a Public Information Officer of the United Nations for Benelux and prior to this assignment, he worked as a UN Volunteer in various stations all around the world. Interestingly, between February 2011 and August 2013, he was based in Kabul, Afghanistan, as the Head of Public Information. He has very close to the student body, as he was employed as a Lecturer at Katholieke Universiteit Brussel (2000-2003) and today, he aims to advance values behind the work of the United Nations especially at MUN simulations and other similar conferences.

Professor Jang Jin-Sung

Mr. Jang’s background is truly extraordinary. Mr. Jang was one of Kim Jong-il’s favourite propaganda poets and a psychological warfare officer until he defected from the North Korean regime. In 2003, Mr. Jang escaped from North Korea into China across the frozen Tumen River with his friend Young-min. He defected to South Korea in 2004. Today, Mr. Jang is one of Pyongyang’s most vocal critics.

Post-exile, he worked as a senior research fellow at the Institute for National Security Strategy in Seoul. He is the founder and publisher of New Focus International that offers insights into North Korea, reports, and analysis rooted in firsthand experiences and understandings and it also maintains access potential into the economic and power nexus of North Korea (see http://newfocusintl.com). Besides his other published works, his memoir, Dear Leader, was published by Random House (UK/Worldwide) and Simon & Schuster (US/Canada). He has close ties to Leiden University and serves as a Lecuturer at the Korea department of the School of Asian Studies.

Welcome word by the Secretary-General followed by a lecture about working for the United Nations by Mr. Christophe Verhellen from the United Nations Regional Information Office for Benelux (Location: Anna van Buerenplein 301, auditorium).

Registration ends.

Delegates and Journalists break into their committees and follow their Chairs and Editors-in-Chief to Committee Workshops (rooms 3.01-3.06 and the auditorium).

Opening ceremony ends. Delegates and Journalists travel to the main conference venue (Address: NH Hotel Den Haag, Prinses Margrietplantsoen 100, The Hague). Journalists are required to take the tram. Delegates may choose whether they will walk (approximately 2km) or whether they wish to take the tram. Both groups shall be accompanied by the organizers. You need to indicate whether you intend to take the tram or to walk during the registration.

Committee work begins.

Lunch begins. Committees are split into two groups, one of which will go for lunch at 12:45 (GA and HRC) and the other at 13:00 (all other committees).

Opening Ceremony > Conference VenueTake tram 3 (direction Zoetermeer Centrum-West) or tram 4 (direction Zoetermeer Javalaan) from Spui (note: station is underground!) to Beatrixkwartier. The tram ride should take around 10 minutes. You can also walk, which will take you around 25 minutes.

Conference Venue > Closing CeremonyTake tram 3 (direction Den Haag Loosduinen) or tram 4 (direction Den Haag De Uithof) from Beatrixkwartier to Central Station. The tram ride should take around 5 minutes, walking around 15.

Social Program

The Hague Highlights City Tour (Thursday 23 April – 14:30-16:30)

Local student tour guides will walk with you along some of the highlights the beautiful city of the Hague has to offer. We will gather and leave from Anna van Buerenplein (registration day 0 location) and depart in different groups. In the end, we will all come together at Grote Markt where we can grab a drink if you’d like, and walk back to Anna van Bueren.

Diplomat Soiree (Friday 24 April – 18:00-19:30)

After committee session on Friday there will be the occasion for MUNOTH Participants to meet with professionals from the work fields related to international relations, whilst enjoying a drink and bite. Obviously, this is also the opportunity to socialize with your committee members or other participants.

MUNOTH Student Party (Saturday 25 April – 21:00-03:30)

MUN is not MUN without a party! On Saturday we invite all the participants of MUNOTH to put on their dancing shoes and join us at La Bodeguita! This Latin bar guarantees a fiesta where you can show off your sexy dance moves and have fun! Do you have friends in The Hague and you’d like them to come? No worries!
