A BRiEF HiSTORY OF THE DAMPiER ART AWARDS

JUDGE FOR THE DAMPiER ART AWARDS

“where we love is home - home thAt our feet mAy leAve, but not our heArts.”

- oliver wendell holmes

In 2010 the Dampier Arts Awards made its debut with the support of the local community who were enthusiastic to showcase the talents within the town. The debut theme was ‘By the Sea’ and a beautiful mermaid was the centre piece in which all artwork was a reflection of the local residents’ affinity to the ocean in both work and play.

The Dampier Art Awards are open to anyone living within the City of Karratha region and endeavours to capture the essence of what life is like, living and working in the Pilbara. The theme for 2013 was ‘From little things, big things grow’ and enabled local artists to give us a snapshot of moments of time captured by a drop of paint or a smear of charcoal. Last year the theme was ‘Colour My Life’; capturing the colours all around us and how they make us feel, think and act.

This year, the theme of the Dampier Art Awards is “Home is where the heart is”. Home can mean different things to different people - from the roof over your head, to the family and community you surround yourself with, to a geographical location. It can be all of these things. Many of us who call the Pilbara home have come here from far and wide, meaning that we may have many places our heart calls home. This year’s award theme invites entrants to explore the connection of heart and home.

Whether your specialty is portrait, landscape, abstract or sculpture, the Dampier Art Awards offers a category for all artistic fortés.

We look forward to your entry.

In 2015 the Dampier Arts Awards will be judged by Carrie McDowell.

Carrie is a practicing artist based in Karratha. She has a Bachelor of Art (Art) Hons from Curtin University of Technology and a Master of Visual Art from Monash University. Her art practice focusses on materiality and process and explores various mediums and genres. She makes art with materials sourced from the lived environment, which vary according to surroundings; similarly the making process is informed by the materials and the outcome reflects the experience. Since moving to the Pilbara, Carrie’s art has been informed by her appreciation of the natural environment and landscapes of the region.

Carrie has a well-established relationship with West Pilbara artists and groups. She has run a number of workshops in the region and for the past two years has been working with Aboriginal artists at the Cheeditha and Ngurrawaana Aboriginal communities to develop their art practice to genres other than painting with the view to creating a sustainable income.
