Message from Lisa McAuley
The Export Council of Australia is honoured to once again be organising the Premier’s NSW Export Awards. Entering its 52nd year the awards program will continue to recognise and honour business excellence in the field of international trade.
It truly is a great honour to be associated with the awards program and to follow the tremendous success of our NSW exporters. Last year our state winners travelled to Melbourne to compete at a National level and did not disappoint by taking out four of the industry category awards including Small Business, Manufacturing, Information and Communication Technology, and Creative Industries - that’s more than any other State or Territory!
As long term participants in the awards we would like to thank our exporting community for their commitment to this highly regarded program by continuing to share stories of resilience, passion, dedication and international success.
Kind regards
Lisa McAuley COO Export Council of Australia

Now in its 52nd year, the Export Council of Australia encourages all exporters to apply for a 2014 Premier’s NSW Export Award. The awards celebrate the innovative talent and spirit of our top exporters by recognising the significant contribution they make to our state and national economy.
The program is a state wide competition that rewards businesses, regardless of size or location that has shown a commitment to growing a global business by competing on the international stage.

The Industry Awards presentation dinner on Thursday 23 October will bring New South Wales exporting companies together to celebrate another exciting year of achievements. The evening will be hailed as the industry’s networking event of 2014 with exporters from across the state convening
in Sydney to enjoy fine food and wine among industry peers and Government dignitaries.

About The Australian Export Awardscontinued
“It was exhilarating for us to finally win the Education & Training Category award at the NSW Export Awards in 2012 and to be nominated for the National Award. We work very hard to provide quality education and exceptional service to our students and to be recognised at a state level was a significant achievement for our small and closely knit team.”AMJAD KHANCHECHIEF EXECUTIVE AUSTRALIAN INSTITUTE OF PROFESSIONAL EDUCATION
“Winning an export award means a lot to our company and more particularly to the export team. Our team strives to be their best every day, and it is especially encouraging for us all to be recognised among our peers when there are so many external challenges to our external business. It is the perk up that we needed to keep doing what we do.”MATTHEW MCKENZIESANITARIUM HEALTH & WELLNESS

Tips for completing your application
The quality of the application submitted is an important factor in demonstrating your organisations achievements and thereby enhancing your prospects of winning. The main basis of judging will be the responses to the questions outlined in the application form.
It’s not just about what you did – it’s how you did it• The financials, including the export
financials, are important but are not the only criteria.
• It is essential that the application tells the export story, realistically and yet interestingly, of how your company has broken into and built up sustainable overseas markets.
Stand out from the crowd• Market your organisation in your
application by highlighting your strengths, illustrating how innovative and special your achievements have been.
• If you have been exporting for several years ensure that your application demonstrates what you have done differently to consolidate and grow your position in the past year, (e.g. new
markets, new technologies, focused marketing strategy).
Spell it out in a concise and effective way • You need to tell your story in the
application, so make every word count. The judges will base their decisions solely on this information.
• Do not assume that the judges are aware of your organisation, its products and successes.
• Explain in non-technical terms what your products or services are.
• Dot points can be utilised as appropriate to identify your key strengths and strategies.
• Outline your international competitive advantage and your organisation’s export aspirations and strategies, before moving on to look at your activities in particular markets.
Conquering export markets• Explain your firm’s strategy in gaining
a secure foothold in a new market in your key markets, what did you do to secure international contracts and market acceptance?
17
Tips for completing your applicationcontinued
• What actions did you take (e.g. product adaptation to meet customer preferences, building relationships with distributors and buyers, addressing cultural issues in marketing materials and products, attending trade events etc.), and techniques to overcome buyer resistance. Identify the key factors that you consider made your organisation a successful exporter.
• For organisations that have applied previously, and possibly won, it is important to clearly detail what was been achieved since your most recent success in the Awards, (e.g. new marketing strategies, entering new markets, introduction of new technology, new products etc.).
• Special emphasis should be made on the contribution of innovation (e.g. marketing strategies, new technologies etc.) in achieving export success.
Tracking your achievements• Help the judges follow your road to export
success. Identify the significant landmarks (e.g. In 2012/13 we broke into the Chinese market for the first time).
• Clearly outline what your most outstanding export achievements have been (e.g. Last year we signed a distribution deal with the largest supermarket chain in the US).
Which category? • Apply for more than one category. As
you can select multiple categories & increase your chances. But please only select categories that are relevant to your business!
• Judges always reserve the right to determine the category of award you best belong in, normally they will adopt your stated preference.
• Where there is an industry-specific category that clearly relates to your business, e.g. agribusiness or education and training, then you should select that category. Where there is not, you should apply under the relevant generic category e.g. Small Business.
• If your head office is based in a non-metropolitan location you will be eligible for the Regional Exporter of the Year Award.
