Steph had always said she could skydive
‘easily.’ I however had no desire to perform
this seemingly ridiculous act and she knew
very well of it. Having made this point many
times in our relationship, it unwittingly
created the space for me to organise an event
that she would never expect.
I decided to propose to her just before
dropping out of a plane at 14 thousand feet.
It was the perfect idea and guise, as every
time I acted a little strange or easily shocked,
it was ‘understandable’-let’s face it, jumping
out of a plane for the first time doesn’t exactly
land naturally with many.
So, I got into the organising of this production
whilst filming Hi-5’s 13th series. I had
arranged for all immediate family members
from both sides and a handful of our closest
friends to be covertly hiding up in the Hunter
Valley for us. A bulk of them live overseas
which meant a few covert trips to the airport
on the days proceeding. All invitees knew I
was proposing, but only a few knew exactly
how.
The majority of them thought I was simply
proposing in a park and that they would
suddenly appear when instructed. As I have
since been told, there were some pretty
nervous looks when they saw that their
eventual meeting point was clearly marked
with a sign exclaiming it was a ‘Drop Zone’.
But, my plan was that by this stage, Steph
and I had already suited up, taken off and
were well out of contact from my Mother, so
everything would be sweet!
Finally when the day rolled around, it had
turned out to be a picture-perfect and
cloudless day to propose to Steph. When the
clock struck 2pm, it was finally our turn to
go up in the plane. The skydiving company,
Just Jump Skydive (who were all in on the
plan), called Steph’s Dad, Andy, to let him
know that we had both taken off and that they
were to quickly drive to the meeting point at
the airstrip.
Meanwhile, Steph and I were now both
strapped to skydive instructors and climbing
ever higher and higher. I had a fake
engagement ring in my pocket and the plan
was to show Steph the ring, throw it out the
door of the plane, act shocked and then jump
out after it. However, when the pilot informed
us that we were almost at the drop zone. I
went to get the ring from my pocket and found
the harness that connected me to the man on
my back made it impossible to get out of the
pocket. So, I quickly adjusted the plan and
just before we reached the drop zone I turned
to Steph and simply said...“Steph, I love you….
will you marry me?”

the romantic

tim has always been full of romantic ideas and was never shy of expressing his love to me through grand gestures and surprises.”

She was so blindsided by this question that I
had to ask twice in the end and even then she
was still confused. So, quickly showing her the
ring then biffing it wouldn’t have been clear
enough anyway! Steph finally comprehended
the seriousness of my question, and instantly
tears started to form in her eyes. Then with
a nod of her head and a yes from her mouth,
they formed in mine.
In what then seemed like a few seconds, my
feet were hanging out the side of the plane
14,000 ft. up and I then dived out with another
human still strapped to my back.
Poor girl, in just over a minute she had been
proposed to, watched her now fiancé fall right
out of the plane and now she was hurtling
towards the ground at terminal velocity.
For me, the skydive was easy compared to
popping the question. After the relieving jolt
of both the parachutes opening, we all glided
closer to the ground. At around halfway down,
Steph noticed my homemade banner with the
words ‘Love you Bubs’ on the ground and the
tears began to flow from her again.
Thanks to our wonderful instructors, we glided
safely back to earth. My two little nephews,
who Steph is very familiar with, ran out onto
the landing area with the real diamond ring
in the box. By this stage, Steph was actually
in absolute shock-she didn’t recognise them
at all! Then after a little nervous laugh I got
down on one knee and asked her once more,
this time traditionally and with the diamond
ring presented.
With another tearful nod of the head, the
engagement ring was now firmly on Steph’s
finger. She then turned to see where all the
commotion and screams were coming from
and for the first time, noticed both of our
families rushing towards us! I think this was
the point where Steph’s adrenalin re-filled her
body and she started to sway and could barely
hold her body up-let alone walk! I thought she
was about to pass out from more shock! We
didn’t have a faint but we weren’t far from it.
That for me was the highlight of the day-
not seeing her waver on the border of
unconsciousness but for both of us to be able
to share this moment with the people who
mean the most to us both. We all shared a
barrage of hugs and kisses cried, laughed and
checked out the ring before then heading off
to enjoy the rest of the weekend together in
the lovely little town of Wollombi in NSW.

watcH tHe video HereHere are some handy tips and thoughts to help you and your partner
with your wedding day planning. Some will further help your
photographer and videographer on the day to ensure they get the
best out of you and all the wonderful details you’ve spent so long
on attending to.
2.
When selecting your ceremony time, look up
when the sun sets of the day and as a guide aim
for 1.5 to 2 hours of daylight after the ceremony
for family and location shots with the bridal party. Allowing two hours
is much more preferable given that congratulatory and family photos
usually takes up about 30 minutes. If you have hired both photography
and videography services for your day, each will want to capture your
location coverage differently.
Buttonholes are commonly up for discussion on the wedding day. Which
side do they go on and how do you pin the damn thing? The buttonhole,
sometimes mistaken for a corsage which is worn by women around
their wrists, are placed on the lapel of the groom and groomsmen’s
jacket - on their left. If the groom and groomsmen are going for a more
open collar look, place the flower as per the above. Check out this video
link for a how to in pinning a buttonhole to the lapel.

3.
Some packages will contain a second photographer to assist in the
day’s coverage. Ask whether they are a fully fledged photographer with
adequate training and ask to see a sample of their work. A second
photographer is commonly utilised to provide a secondary point of view
from the day. They may look after the groom prep whilst the primary
photographer photographs the bride. Once finished, they meet at the
ceremony and carry through the day. Generally, second photographers
may also be added to your package in the event you are expecting a
large number of guests.
4.
Choosing to have your wedding on a weekday usually
attracts cheaper rates from many wedding services.
Nowadays, it isn’t uncommon for weddings to fall
on a Monday, Thursday and Friday. As they do not
impede on the weekend bookings, establishments
and suppliers are able to take more jobs on board and provide more
inclusions in your wedding package. If this applies to you, ask if your
wedding photographer and videographer can include some added value.
When selecting a wedding album package, ask your photographer how
many sides come standard and the cost for each additional sides. Ask
what cover and page options are included? Do you have choice or are
these built into the package price. Some of the common cover choices
include leather, leather with inset plaque, acrylic and photo covers.
Some of the common page designs include a magazine style (photos
can reach the edge), matted (traditional photo mounts are custom cut
and overlayed providing a beveled framing of each photo) or duo (a
combination of magazine and matted).
5.
6.
Streamline the shooting process by placing all
your details such as the dresses, veil, jewellery,
the rings, the ring pillow, bouquets, buttonholes, perfume, garter,
shoes, programs, cuff links, ties, belts and suits in an accessible area
for the photographer and videographer to capture. Hang your dress
using a nice hanger. If the dress is a lace up corset, allow at least 30
minutes of prep and holding your breathe. As the corset will loosen as
the day unfolds, ensure to tighten it a little tighter at the beginning to
allow for this.
www.frankfarrugia.com www.facebook.com/frankfarrugiaphoto
10.Don’t get caught up in all the photography jargon
photography and videography studios use. An example
of this is HD DSLR coverage. This is simply referring
to the type of cameras used in the coverage and that
they will be capturing your day with a high end digital
camera capable of filming in high definition quality. Unfortunately some
do try and catch out on prospective clients who aren’t familiar with the
terminology. Majority of professional photographers will certainly use
a camera to the specifications mentioned above. This makes them no
different to the next photographer in respect to gear, base your choice
on their work, the quality of inclusions and your experience with them.
8.
Your wedding day is exactly that. Appropriate your day so that it reflects
you and your partner. Look at different styling blogs like The Knot and
Pinterest boards for inspiration. Quirk is the new black!
If you have guests arriving from interstate or overseas, a great way for
them to view your wedding photographs and video is naturally by way
of the internet. Ask your photographer if you want this service included
in your package. Photographs can be uploaded to a private server and
accessed by using a password. Facebook, Instagram and other social
media websites are great for sharing your images but not everyone
has jumped on the social media train. So, to keep things private and
accesible no matter where you are, consider this option for your guests.
It also minimises people bugging you to see your photos after the day.
7.
9.
A photographer, like any other small business owner, needs to factor
in a ridiculously large list of expenses into the cost of their wedding
packages. Spending $3500 on the coverage alone may seem like
a lot of money and certainly, clients do need to work within their
means, however after stripping the cost of equipment, insurances
and marketing just to name only a few things, the photographer isn’t
pocketing a large amount of money. A wedding with 8 hours coverage
and an album involves approximately 40 hours of work, from meeting
you through to the final exchange of your package
inclusions.
Part of a professional photographer’s role on
your day is to capture at least one photo of every
guest. To highlight the VIP guests who have flown
from overseas just to see you walk down the aisle,
perhaps create a must-have shot list. This is also
very helpful for family group photos. Provide the list with someone
who is familiar with both sides of the family and have them assist the
photographer in making sure they are included in their relevant family
photos. This will also streamline this part of your coverage and will
ensure no one important is forgotten.
11.Destination weddings are great for all involved.
Everyone is on a high not only to witness the
marriage of a couple but also for the simple fact
that they are on holidays. If commissioning a photographer locally and
flying them interstate or overseas to the destination, it is a common
requirement to fly them over one day before the wedding day to allow
for location scouting and to be on top of the possibility that the flight
may be delayed due to unforeseen bad weather systems.
12.
www.frankfarrugia.com www.facebook.com/frankfarrugiaphoto
14.
Pack the kit with the styling essentials: hollywood tape, some lippy,
tissues and your perfume.
I will not be the first to mention this leading up to the day, but just
remember to take moments throughout the wedding day to absorb
what is happening around you. The day usually unravels faster than you
hope it to and it is easy to become detached from the time. Stop, take
it in and remember, this is you and your partner’s day, no one elses!
It is vital to back up your wedding photos and video in
two separate locations. Whether they are provided to
you on DVD’s or USB flash drives, digital media has
a life span and unfortunately it isn’t infinite. Indeed,
photographers will guarantee a length of time to which
they will hold onto your photos, however once this period is over it is
your responsibility to hold your end of the bargain. Further, printing
your images is considered to be a backup in itself. If something were to
happen to your digital files, knock on wood, prints can be scanned at the
same size or even bigger with some quality compromise.
13. Another good question to ask your photographer
and videographer is what the projected turnaround
for your product and service inclusions. This
certainly varies between studios so don’t be afraid to ask how long it’ll
take. After all, there are some horror stories where couples have waited
several months for their photos. It should not take more than a month
or two to get your proofs from your nominated photographer.
15.
17.
16.
High resolution disks contain high quality files
for you to freely print to your hearts content. Full
res refers to the largest file size that the camera
produces where low res are files downsized and
customised for screen based displays like computer monitors, web and
televisions. Low res files are not suitable for printing.
Location photos are great fun for you, your partner and the bridal party.
If you are considering heading down to a park or grassy area, you may
want to consider having some heel stoppers on the girl’s shoes to stop
them from sinking into the ground.
18.
19.
Your choice of location for photos between the ceremony and reception
is a chance for you and your partner to do something a little different.
If you are tired of seeing the same location over and over, ask your
photographer if he or she knows of any cool spots that go a little
against the grain.
www.frankfarrugia.com www.facebook.com/frankfarrugiaphoto
Standard processing of all images should certainly
be included in the cost of your package. This involves
colour and exposure corrections, additional intricate
retouching may not. Standard processing takes
photography studios approx twice the length of the
coverage. For instance, if a wedding coverage is 10 hours, standard
processing will take approx 20 hours. Further edits are generally made
to images that make the final album design selection. If photographers
retouch all images from a wedding, they will not only be out of a job but
also require a good 6 months to turn around the base product.

There will be many cameras pointed toward you and
your partner on the day. When formal family shots are
being captured, try to remember to concentrate your
attention to that of the commissioned photographer.
If there are a number of guests taking photos, a good photographer will
organise and inform you of which camera to look at and when.
As professional practice, a wedding agreement should be provided to
you by your photographer upon booking. This should outline their terms
and conditions and any other relevant details. If there is something you
feel is not included or transparent in the agreement, be sure to enquire
and suggest an adjustment so that both parties are on the same page. 23.
22.In the event of the all forbidden rain on your wedding day, don’t be
alarmed. An experienced photographer can still have fun with light and
a continguency plan....or two, should be in the photographer’s repertoire
of location ideas. Wedding car hire companies should provide a number
of umbrellas, confirm this before the day. Stick to plain black or white
umbrellas. Black absorbs light, thus reduces an already ill lit situation.
White reflects light, thus makes it a little easier to work with. Hold the
brollies up so that they don’t cast a heavy shadow on you and your partner.
24.Don’t run down the aisle. The speed in which you and your bridesmaids
walk up the aisle is usually relative to its length. Keeping in mind
photography is all about quantity of light, if the ceremony is in a dark
church, slow shutter speeds are required to achieve a realistic level of
brightness. However, this runs the risk of blur. So as a general rule,
walk slower rather than power walk.
If you are someone who isn’t overly fond of being the centre of attention,
the candid photography approach is certainly going to work better for
you. Your decision to select a photographer over another should be
influenced by the degree of comfort you have with them during your
initial meeting. Be straight up and let them know that you prefer a less
contrived approach. A good photographer will know how what to do and
create beautiful photos whilst considering your desires.
25.Overcast is the ideal weather situation for a
photographer because the clouds act as a natural
diffuser, spreading the light and evening it out so that there is an
absence of harsh shadowing or highlights on the face, dress etc. So
when you look out the window the morning of your wedding day and
begin to freak out....remember this piece of information. Instead....
smile. Clouds add drama to the sky creating a more moody atmosphere.
26.
www.frankfarrugia.com www.facebook.com/frankfarrugiaphoto
If your ceremony is partly in another language,
inform your photographer if there are any sections of
the mass that are sensitive. Although it is of common
understanding amongst professional photographers to avoid shooting
during prayer time, if in a language not native to the photographer,
they may unknowingly offend. Simply inform the photographer of the
cultural sensitivities before the wedding.
28.27.
Hotel rooms are ideal for preparation shots as
they are usually furnished nicely and are well lit.
Supposing this is a convenient option where your ceremony is located
nearby, you can save money by walking over. After all, if you save money
here, you naturally should be entitled to a pamper day spa package and
hotel room for you and the girls....right?
To avoid blistering, aim to wear in your bridal
shoes a little so that they are stretched out for the
day. Ideally, wear them around the house once or
twice and keep them as clean as possible. A common fashion industry
tip is to tape the soles with masking tape so the soles remain as new.
30.
29.When selecting an ideal location for photos after the ceremony, take
into account travelling time and how that may impede on the time
spent in front of the camera. If you’ve selected an all in one location,
than fantastic. This means you will not only maximise your time with
your photographer but also not have to worry about traffic congestion.
If travelling reasonable distances, research if there is a football match
or road closures around the area that will inevitably affect this part of
the coverage. Your driver, if a hired professional, should be aware of any
obstacles and select a route that will get you there on time.
