Admission to the School at 11+ At eleven years of age there is a threeform entry of around 60 pupils.Applicants should have attained the ageof eleven before September 1st in the yearof entry. Places are offered on the basis ofa satisfactory performance at the 11+test, interview and school report. Theentrance examination is held during theSpring Term and the aim is to test theskills of the candidates whatever theirbackground. Papers are set in English andMathematics and Reasoning. If AldenhamSchool is the only choice, an early offermay be made, subject to a satisfactoryinterview and school report. The testwould be sat in the normal way.

Admission at 13+ Up to 30 places are available at 13+ to jointhe pupils moving up from Martineau’sHouse. Places are offered on the basis of13+ test, interview and school report. Thetest is during the Spring Term and papersare set in English, Maths, a ModernForeign Language, Science and VerbalReasoning. If Aldenham School is the onlychoice, an early offer may be made,subject to a satisfactory interview andschool report. The test would be sat in thenormal way. Candidates must be under 14on 1st September following the exam.

Admission to Sixth Form Places are available at Sixth Form level forboth boys and girls. Offers are based on aschool report and individual interview. Aminimum of 5 GCSE passes at grade C orabove is required, with at least B gradesexpected in the subjects to be studied atAS/A2 Level.

Admission at other ages Vacancies do sometimes arise other than at11+, 13+, 16+ and enquiries for admissionshould be made in the usual way bycontacting the Admissions Co-ordinator.

Induction Programme

Year 7 Induction ProgrammePupils new to Year 7 will attend an off-siteovernight induction experience at the startof the academic year. This is a team buildingexercise and is an essential part of theInduction Programme.

Year 7-11 Induction ProgrammeAll new pupils joining Years 7-11 will attendan Induction Day on the day before the startof the new academic year.

UK Sixth Form Induction ProgrammeA 3-day Induction Programme for UKstudents entering the Sixth Form will takeplace during the last week of the summerterm prior to them joining. A furtherinduction morning will take place the daybefore term begins.

Overseas Induction ProgrammeStudents joining from overseas are invitedto arrive by 4.30pm 2 days before the startof the new academic year to enable them tosettle in.

Open Days Open Days are held for prospective parentsin the Autumn and Summer Terms eachyear, with a Sixth Form Open Evening in theAutumn term. On these occasions theHeadmaster will speak and there is anopportunity to meet both staff and pupils.Please telephone the Admissions Co-ordinator for further details.

Notes

i) The Registration Fee is payable at thetime a boy or girl is registered and before anoffer of a place can be made.

ii) During the year in which a boy or girl isdue to enter the School, an acceptancedeposit of £1,000 is payable to be set offagainst the final term’s extras bill. Foroverseas students the deposit is a term’s feesand again this is set off against the finalterm’s extras bill, and the balance returned.Otherwise this deposit will be returned onlywhen the School has to cancel the entry as aresult of exam performance or for health orother reasons as specified in the StandardTerms and Conditions.

iii) For convenience the annual Fee ispayable termly in advance in three equalamounts and may be paid either in full bytermly Direct Debit, bank transfer, chequeor on a monthly basis through a SchoolsFees Plan scheme. We also take debit/creditcards (there is a small charge for creditcards).* If the fees are not paid by the due

date the School reserves the right to imposea surcharge or to require that a boy or girlleave the School until the relevant fees arepaid. It is the Governors’ intention to holdfees at the level stated for the full AcademicYear 2017/2018 but they reserve the rightto change them if circumstances so require.

A term’s notice must be given if it isnecessary for a boy or girl to leave theSchool, otherwise a full term’s fees in lieu ofnotice will be payable, notwithstanding anyincrease there may have been from theabove date. A term’s notice must also begiven for a change of status from boarding today, and a half a term’s notice for otherchanges.

iv) The School can provide details ofschemes involving lump sum payment offees in advance and is always ready todiscuss other ways of providing for schoolfees.

* Any other method of payment must beindividually agreed with the School.

Music Tuition Fees (Individual) 40 minute lesson £30.10 per lesson. Forfurther details of music lessons availableplease refer to page 15.

English as a Foreign Language Fee Individual 40 minute sessions (25 lessonsper year) will be charged at £380 per termfor 25 lessons for the academic year.Therefore a pupil requiring 2 sessions aweek will be charged £760 per term, and 3sessions a week £1,140 per term.

A number of awards are made each year forexceptional performance at the time ofapplication in academic work, art, music,technology or sport. Occasionally fine allrounders are given an award. Sixth Formscholarships are available either for thosealready in the School or those joining at thatpoint, based on potential to succeed in theSixth Form.

Bursary funding is available to support anumber of students each year whose familycircumstances mean that they would beunable to join or continue in the School, butwhere their potential of success is judgedsignificant. The Foundation utilises theservices of an external body, BursaryAdministration Ltd (BAL)(www.schoolbusaryguide.com) who maycomplete a home visit with the parents toreview documentation and to have a generalconversation regarding their application. Allawards are subject to an annual reviewwhich is carried out during the Summerterm for the following school year.

All Scholarships and Exhibitions are tenablefrom the time of the award until the boy orgirl leaves the School. Holders of awards are expected to remain at School until they

have taken their A Level exams and thecontinuance of the award is subject tosatisfactory progress and conduct.

Academic Awards At 11+ and 13+, awards are made on thebasis of performance in the Entry Test and asubsequent interview.

Other AwardsAt 11+ candidates who have a special abilityin Music or Sport should inform theAdmissions Co-ordinator well before theEntry Tests as an audition or portfolio ofproject work will be required.

At 13+ all candidates who show a specialability in Art, Music, Design & Technology orSport should inform the AdmissionsCo-ordinator well before the Entry Tests asan audition or portfolio of project work willbe required.

At 16+, awards are made on the basis ofGCSE performance and interview.

All scholarship applications need to besupported by the candidate’s current HeadTeacher.

Scholarships and Bursaries

Music Awards Candidates at all ages should offer twoinstruments (this includes singing,especially at 16+, which forms an importantpart of the musical life of the School as awhole) and the standard of one of these at11+ should be Grade III / IV of theAssociated Board, at 13+ Grade V/VI and at16+ Grade VI / VII. Music Scholars andExhibitioners receive free instrumentaltuition for one instrument. Considerationwill be given to candidates according topotential and the candidate’s enthusiasm totake part in musical activities such asconcerts, music competitions, choir,orchestra and chamber groups.

Art Awards Awarded at 13+ and 16+. Art Scholars areseen as ambassadors for the departmentwithin the school. Candidates shouldtherefore be able to demonstrate anexcellent drawing and painting ability aswell as strengths in using a wide variety ofmedia within their A3/A2 sized portfoliobrought to interview for discussion (all 3-Dwork & large scale pieces to be presented asphotographs within the portfolio).Candidates should show a well advancedvisual perception, being able tocommunicate ideas and feelings in a visualway based on both perception andconception (observed, remembered andimagined). The portfolio work shouldconsist of the most recent and up to date artwork completed either in school or in theirown spare time beyond the class room.Students must bring their school Artsketchbook with them as well. There willalso be a drawing task during the interview.Potential art scholars should be able todiscuss their work confidently and expresstheir deep interest and enthusiasm for thissubject fluently at interview.

Design & Technology Awards Awarded at 13+ and 16+. We look for an abilityto explore and resolve design problemsthroughout the many areas of the subject;these will include timbers, metals, electronics,textiles, polymers, boards and papers. As wellas an ability to correctly communicate a designidea, we will be looking to see evidence of thestudent’s interest in the world of design andinnovation. Candidates should expect todemonstrate evidence of their design andpractical experience through an informalportfolio of work as well as finished productsfor handling. They will be interviewed abouttheir experiences and invited to talk about thework presented. Candidates will alsoundertake a series of short multi disciplinetasks to establish their creative potential.

Sports Awards An Aldenham School Sports Scholarship isnormally awarded to candidates who show avery good level of performance in TWO of themain sports played at Aldenham, as follows: For boys (Football, Hockey and Cricket)For girls (Hockey, Netball and a range of

other sports including Athletics, Rounders and Tennis)

As a guide a very good level of performancewould equate to an excellent School 1st Teamplayer with the ability to affect a match in apositive way. However, consideration will alsobe given to candidates who specialise to aparticularly high level in one sport. Referencesmust normally be supplied from theappropriate team or club if you are applying foran award based on one sport only.

From the candidates applying, a group will beinvited to attend a session at Aldenham to takepart in a selection procedure. This will involvefitness testing (‘bleep test’ / cooper run / Illinoisagility) hockey tests, cricket nets, football,netball. Further details may be obtained fromthe Director of Sport.

The School Day ‘Call’ in Houses for boarders is at 7.30amfollowed by breakfast from 7.35–8.05am.Registration for all pupils is at 8.30am.Lessons begin at 8.40am. On Monday thereis a Headmaster’s Assembly. On Mondayand Friday the whole school meets inChapel for Assembly or an act of worship.There are five lessons every morning. Thereare three lessons on Monday afternoon andalternate Wednesday afternoons and twolessons on all other weekday afternoons.There is one games afternoon each weekexcept in Martineau’s where there are two.Extra curricular activities run twice weekly.Pupils meet with their tutors everyWednesday afternoon. Life matters (PSHE)is delivered in Yr 7-11 by specialist teachers.

The School day finishes at 5.30pm every dayexcept Friday when there is an early finishat 4.40pm.

Homework (Prep) ‘Prep’ at Aldenham follows the best ofmodern practice: staff set tasks that testunderstanding and provide more evidence ofprogress. It should be assumed that some‘prep tasks’ will require the use of a computerand the internet. The amount and length of‘Prep’ is gradually increased as pupils moveup through the School. Sixth Formers areencouraged to work independently inaddition to any set tasks. In every case, ‘Prep’is a key part of learning at Aldenham.

Monitoring Pupils’ Progress Aldenham has created a culture of learningand improvement for all. Our excellentpupil/teacher ratio and small size allows usto monitor progress and provide individualcare with the aim of everyone reaching hisor her full potential. Pupils are given closeguidance by their tutor and housemaster /mistress and pupils are constantlychallenged by enthusiastic and effectiveteachers. We aim to maximise theopportunities for all to flourish so pupils andparents can value the achievements of everypupil at the School.

Medical Facilities The School has a well equipped HealthCentre staffed by a team of highly qualifiednurses to deal with minor ailments andinjuries. Health education, as well assupport and advice, is available to allstudents and is an important part of themedical service.

The School Doctor holds a daily surgery forboarders at the School and is available foradvice in between visits. Medical screeningon entry to the School is available alongwith the option to take part in the School’simmunisation programme which includesall relevant vaccinations for each yeargroup. An Independent Counsellor isavailable to see pupils wishing to discussissues in confidence.

The School and the Wider Community

Catering Holroyd Howe are the School caterers withfull time management on site withresponsibility for all catering and domesticservices within the School. A wide selectionof food is available from the dining room atbreakfast, lunch and dinner, with a saladbar always available as an option at lunchtime. Hot and cold vegetarian options areavailable at all meals. Special requirementsfor medical reasons can be discussed withthe Catering Management. Holroyd Howealso operate the Tuck Shop which is open atbreak Monday-Friday.

The School Shop The on site School Shop is operated byStevensons and is open Monday, Tuesday,Wednesday and Friday from 1.00-4.00pmand Thursday 2.00-5.00pm during termtime. Also on an appointment basis in thesummer holiday. Telephone 01727 814368.

Parents Good liaison between home and school is anessential part of life at Aldenham. We valueour relationship with parents who cancontact the School at anytime. Closecommunication between school and home,whether boarding or day pupils is one of thefoundations for a pupil’s successful journeythrough the School. An enewsletter is sent byemail to parents each Friday giving updateson events and school news.

The Aldenham School Parents’ Association (ASPA) Our community extends to parents, many ofwhom are involved in ASPA. The associationis open to all parents with children at theSenior School and is structured to promotesocial occasions and encourage exchange ofinformation. The committee of parents iselected each year and ASPA activelysupports School events and runs various

fund raising activities during the year, e.g.Summer Ball and Fireworks Display, theprofits of which help to fund items for theSchool.

The Old Aldenhamian [OA] Society All pupils have the opportunity to join theOA Society at the time of leaving the School.

The OA Society and the School worktogether to provide opportunities for socialoccasions and the continuation of sportsand other interests developed at school. Italso offers valuable business networkingand career development opportunities.

Members of the OA Society have access to asecure, online, database which enablesthem to update their own personalinformation, search for friends, viewphotographs of events and downloadpublications. They will also receive anannual magazine and invitations to a varietyof events.

OAs are part of a worldwide, extendedfamily and the OA Society offers membersof all ages the opportunity to keep in touchwherever their lives may take them. Theaim of the Society is to help the School andits former pupils to prosper and retain linkswith each other well into the future.

Charities Pupils are encouraged to develop anawareness of sociological andenvironmental problems and exercisecare, concern and respect for others. Toco-ordinate this programme there is aSchool Charity Committee which works tosupport a number of charities by raisingmoney through a range of events. Thecommittee is run by the School Chaplainand aims to offer practical and financialsupport to charities at home and abroad.

The Sixth Form Aldenham offers a wide variety of choice inthe Sixth Form. Most students will take 3 ALevels over the two years of the Sixth Form,although the possibility exists for the beststudents to take 4 A Levels. Those taking 3A Levels have the opportunity to study asubsidiary subject including the ExtendedProject Qualification (EPQ) alongside their 3main subjects. In combination with ourextensive extra-curricular programme, workexperience and UCAS advice, thecurriculum in the Sixth Form continues togive pupils their best opportunities andprepares them for university entry.

Sixth Form Leavers 2016The majority of this year’s leavers gainedplaces at their chosen universities includingCardiff, Durham, Edinburgh, Exeter,Goldsmith, Imperial, Loughborough, LSE,Nottingham, Oxford, St Andrews, UCL, UEAand York.

The GCSE Programme Pupils follow an extensive ‘core’ programmeof study, which involves work in bothEnglish Language and Literature, Science(taught as three separate sciences, leadingto a double or triple GCSE award),Mathematics, Religious Studies andPhysical Education. In addition, pupilschoose from a wide choice, including aModern Foreign Language, History,Geography, Music, Art, Design Technology,Latin / Classical Civilisation, PhilosophyReligion & Ethics (PRE), PE, ComputerScience and Drama. Pupils are set insubjects where appropriate. Coursework iscarefully guided and all pupils have accessto the Computer Science Centre to supporttheir GCSE studies.

The Lower School Pupils in Martineau’s follow an extendedcurriculum in 15 subjects, including Latin.All pupils have an introduction to playing amusical instrument. Emphasis is placed onEnglish and Mathematics, as literacy andnumeracy provide the foundation forsuccess in other areas. Pupils are alsointroduced to Drama. The curriculumequips pupils with the knowledge, skills andunderstanding for them to make a reasonedchoice of subjects for GCSE.

Sport and GamesSpecialist Games teachers, assisted bymany members of the Common Room,coach Games to individual year groupswithin the school timetable. Each yeargroup has one regular slot allocated withinthe timetable for the coaching of Games andin addition Tuesday afternoon is also setaside for School matches and House Games.The emphasis during Games sessions forMartineau’s pupils is on the major teamsports (football, hockey and cricket forboys, and hockey, netball, and rounders forthe girls), although greater choice andvariety are introduced as pupils progressupwards through the school. School fixturesagainst neighbouring schools take place onTuesdays and Saturdays for year 9 pupilsand above, while Martineau’s fixtures arenormally on Wednesday afternoons.

BOARDING

Aldenham has always been a BoardingSchool with a boarding school ethos basedon a strong House system. The School offersthe full range of boarding options to pupilsfrom 11-18 years of age. The aim is to offer anumber of opportunities for families withina traditional framework of Day and Boardingthus allowing children to move from Day toBoarding status to reflect familycircumstances even if only on a temporarybasis.

Boarding Houses There are 4 Senior Boarding Houses,Beevor’s (Boys), Kennedy’s (Boys), McGill’s(Boys) and Paull’s (Girls). Each is run by aHousemaster or Housemistress, helped byspouses, a matron and resident tutor. Thereare around 70 pupils children in each Houseof whom around 40 will be boarders.

There is also a Junior Boarding House,Martineau’s, where space is available for 16boys and 9 girls to board on a weekly basis.

Flexi Boarding For some pupils the need exists to board on avariable or limited basis and the School ispleased to be able to accommodate theserequirements recognising the needs of themodern day requirements of workingfamilies, subject to the availability of space ina Boarding House. Pupils have their ownregularly allocated bed and facilities in theHouse.

Flexible dayboarding offers the advantages ofan evening meal, supervision and otherfacilities in the Boarding House withoutstaying overnight. Pupils will have a regularlyallocated study space within each House.

Occasional Boarding or Dayboardingenables a pupil’s needs to beaccommodated within the House on aninfrequent basis. Places are by necessitylimited and will depend upon availability,but every attempt will be made to meetparents’ requests. A charge per night islevied for this service and added to the endof term bill.

ACTIVITIES

We offer all pupils from Year 7 – 13 theopportunity to participate in over sixtyrecreational, artistic, community or sportingactivities. All activities take place duringperiods 8 and 9 every Tuesday and Thursday.Pupils opt for activities on a termly basis. Weencourage the development of skills over alonger period of time as well as giving studentsthe chance to experience a variety of newpursuits and challenges. Some pupils mightstay with one activity, such as sailing or CCF,throughout most of their school career, whileothers might participate in new activities everyterm. Some of the activities we offer atAldenham include fives, Young Enterprise,cookery, street dancing, photography,climbing, golf, archery, horse riding andsquash. There is the chance to participate in aschool play or one of the many music groupssuch as the Choir or Orchestra. We run a Dukeof Edinburgh scheme and also offer a numberof community service activities. There is anEAL programme for overseas students.

Sixth Form Year 12 & 13 pupils have the option of privatestudy. Alternatively they may choose fromoptions which have a theme of service to thecommunity, including visiting local elderlyresidents, entertaining a group of visitors tothe School or doing voluntary work on site.The Young Enterprise business scheme, theDuke of Edinburgh scheme (Gold Award) andthe CCF are all popular choices for pupilswishing to gain leadership experience. Theaim is to accustom pupils to take onresponsibility for other people or thecommunity’s welfare as well as forthemselves.

Years 9, 10 and 11 For these year groups, the activitiesafternoons are designed to allow pupils topursue a sporting or other activity which maybe new to them or which is not available atother times in the School programme. Manyof the options can be used as componentstowards pupils’ bronze or silver Duke ofEdinburgh award. Pupils tend to pursue adifferent activity each term but can choose toremain with one for longer. The CCF (Army &RAF sections) is available to all students inYear 9 and above.

Years 7 and 8The emphasis at this age is to introduce thepupils to new activities in a fun environment orto accelerate their learning of new sporting andnon-sporting interests. In one of the threeterms Year 7 students will participate in acarousel of activities - adventure, first aid andcookery. This is organised by House with 2/3Houses allocated to the carousel each term.

Music AwardsThe Music Dept offers a wide range of individuallessons on instruments ranging from Guitar andDrums to Orchestral instruments and Voice.The School Choir, Concert Band, Strings Group,Brass Group and Bell Ringers all take an activepart in the major school events throughout theyear. Do you run a coach service?Yes, we currently run eight bus routes pickingup across North London and surrounding areasfrom 7.25am. For further details see next page.

How far in advance do I need toregister my son /daughter?Ideally by the term before the entranceexam takes place. This enables us to obtainreferences and interview him/her before theexam. Late applications can be accepted butthey may have to be placed on a Waiting List.

Do I need to come for interview ifI have been to an Open Morning?If Aldenham is your first choice school, theHeadmaster likes to meet you and your son/daughter personally. This should be during theacademic year preceding the date of entry.

Do I need to meet the Headmaster?The Headmaster likes to see all prospectivepupils and their parents if possible.

Why can’t my son /daughter come at11+ if he / she is at a 13+ Prep School?Unless there is a specific reason, pupils shouldstay at their Prep School until they are 13. Thisgives them the responsibility and advantagesof being a senior member of their school whichis an important part of their development.Martineau’s House was primarily openedfor pupils from schools which finish at 11+.

When does the Entrance Exam take place?11+ and 13+ – Entrance exams in early January.16+ – Pupils are primarily taken on predictedresults, report from current school andinterview.

What does the Entrance Exam consist of?13+ – English, Maths, A Modern ForeignLanguage (French, Spanish), Science andVerbal Reasoning.11+ – English, Maths and Verbal Reasoning.

Can I have a copy of past Entrance papers?Yes, these are available on the website.

Can we be offered a ReservedPlace before the exam at 11+ / 13+?Reserved places are only offered if you arewilling to commit yourself to Aldenham and noother independent school, a School Reporthas been obtained and you have beeninterviewed by the Headmaster. He wouldthen be in a position to offer a Reserved Place,if he felt Aldenham to be the right school foryour son or daughter. It is a two waycommitment. Your son or daughter would stillsit the Entrance Exam in the normal way toconfirm the place.

How do I apply for a scholarship?You need to write in separately or put a noteon the application form specifying theparticular scholarship for which you wish yourson/daughter to be considered.

We are seeking a bursary,how do we applyfor this?Please indicate in the space provided on theRegistration Form if you are looking for abursary. Bursaries are limited in number andare strictly means tested. An additionalinterview is given to bursary candidates.

Do you cater for pupils with learningdifficulties?We have an extremely good Learning SupportDepartment. However, pupils do need to beable to cope in the normal classroomsituation; they are not taught separately, buthave extra tuition as and when necessary.

How co-educational is Aldenham now?Around one third of the pupils are girls and twothirds are boys.

a) From London the easiest route is from St

Pancras International Thameslink to Elstree

& Borehamwood, taxi for the 5 minute drive

to the School. Trains run every 20 minutes

and the journey takes 20-25 minutes.

b) From the North West most InterCity

trains stop at Watford Junction on the way

into Euston. Aldenham School is a 10

minute taxi ride from Watford. It is

important that the driver knows you are

going to the School and not the village of

Aldenham.

BY TUBE

Jubilee Line to Stanmore and taxi from the

station.

BY ROAD

a) M25 Junction 19: Follow A41 South

towards Watford. Continue following signs

for Aldenham Country Park (approx 7 miles).

Turn left towards Letchmore Heath and at

the end of the road turn left and continue

along this road for about 1 mile until you

reach the School car park on the right, over

the brow of a hill.

b) M25 Junction 23: Follow A1 to Stirling

Corner. A411 to Elstree, across the traffic

lights, then 1st right into Aldenham Road.

Continue along this road for about 2 miles,

the car park is on the right, over the brow of

a hill.

c) From M1 Junction 5: Follow A41 South

towards Watford, proceed as in a) above.

DO NOT FOLLOW ANY SIGNS TO

ALDENHAM VILLAGE.

d) From London: Take M1 to Junction 5,

proceed as in (a) above, OR from Apex

Corner take the A41 North to the Elstree

roundabout. Turn right uphill into Elstree

and left at the traffic lights. Take the 1st

right into Aldenham Road and proceed as in

(b) left.

e) From Radlett: Take the A5183 going

south towards Edgware. Proceed 1½ miles,

turn right into Butterfly Lane, continue until

you come to a T-junction, turn right and the

School car park is on the right after ½ mile.

f) From Borehamwood: From Allum Lane

take the A5183 towards Radlett for 1½

miles, turn left into Butterfly Lane and

proceed as in (e) above.
