S.P.I.C.E. (Society of Peri-Operative Inter-Professional Collab- orative Education) is the educational division of Circle of Care (CoC) and is actively involved with organizing collaborative clinical education semi- nars with IAHCSMM, AORN, APIC and AST. Our goal is to ensure that these esteemed groups collaborate and foster a culture of teamwork so they can take back to their facilities transformational improvements in patient outcomes through clinical competence. Overview Speakers SPICE HAI PREVENTION CONFERENCE Sharon Greene-Golden Heather Hohenberger Heather [BSN RN CIC CNOR CPHQ] is the Quality Improvement Consultant for Peri-Operative Services at Indiana University Health in Indianapolis. An avid patient advocate, Heather facilitates collaboration of multidisci- plinary teams focused on increasing compliance with high-quality care and decreasing patient harm for both adult and pediatric patient populations. With her background in Perioperative nursing, Infection Prevention, and Quality, she encourages and enables teams to turn concepts into operational goals at the point of patient care. Heather is an active member of both AORN and APIC. She serves as a SME and the APIC liaison to the AORN Recommended Practices Advisory Board. Heather has published several times on subjects pertinent to infection prevention and perioperative services. “Breaking Down Silos - Connecting the Disconnection” Sharon Greene-Golden When Reprocessing Devices, Human Factors Matters: Explore the challenges of reprocessing reusable medical device and the human factor that must be taken into consideration. With more than 25 years of experience in the sterile process- ing profession, and countless more years serving the industry through her lively, informative and eye-opening speaking engagements and educational presentations, Sharon [FCS, CRCST] knows how to engage, captivate and ignite passion in her audiences and staff members. She also has a knack for injecting raw honesty and humor into serious subject matter, and having all in her presence sitting up and taking notice. In addition to serving as sterile processing manager for Bon Secours-Mary Immaculate/DePaul Medical Center in Hampton Roads, Virginia, Sharon has actively served on numerous boards and committees for the International Association of Healthcare Central Service Materiel Manage- ment, and presently serves as the Association’s Immediate Past President. Sharon has presented at national, regional and local IAHCSMM meetings, as well as on an international circuit at the Aesculap Academy in Germany, the World Sterilization Congress in Portugal in 2012 and Turkey in 2013, Christ- church, New Zealand and Abu Dhabi, UAE this year – all sessions that garnered terrific reviews. She has also authored numerous articles, which have appeared in various healthcare trade publications and peer-reviewed healthcare journals. In February 2012, she was featured in the TODAY Show segment on “Dirty Surgical Instruments,” serving as a prominent face for the profession, and a sterile processing experts who demonstrated the importance of cleaning and processing instruments according to standards, best practices and manufac- turer Instructions for Use. She’s a strong advocate for state-required certifica- tion of sterile processing professionals, and an outspoken proponent for always doing what’s right, each and every time, in the name of patient safety. Heather Hohenberger Busting down silos: Building relationships across disciplines helps foster a sense of collaboration and understanding among all departments within the Peri-Operative arena. Shawn serves as SVP of Customer Operations for Restore Medical Solutions. Prior to Restore®, He was Manager of the Sterile Processing Department (SPD) at one of the largest Level-1 Trauma Centers in the Southeast. In this position, he focused on optimizing all areas within the department in order to meet future demands and to distinguish the SPD as a model for other hospitals to emulate. Some of his improvements included restructuring the distribution/sterile storage department for a more efficient workflow, replacing antiquated equipment to meet current standards/demand, implementing a career ladder with the focus on retention/recruitment, consolidating High Level Disinfectant (HLD) within SPD and thereby minimizing patient/compliance risk to the hospital, and updating all policy and procedures to meet current AAMI, AORN, and CDC standards. Prior to this, Shawn had a lengthy career in the tissue recovery and tissue banking industry assisting individuals in need of tissue transplant surgeries. His experience also includes post consent planning/preparation, and training staff on recovery techniques in accordance with FDA, OSHA, and AATB standards in a surgical environment. He also served in the US Army as a surgical technician and a Field/Combat Medic.
