s we go to press with this issue ofChamber Matters, I am wonderinghow many readers realized thatthey missed a March 2016 issue.

Following our February issue, we decidedto go from a monthly publication to a bi-monthly schedule. Note that this issue isfor April/May, reporting on events ofFebruary/March and providing informationand a schedule of coming events for Apriland May.

Our reasons for making this change arebased on several factors. Of course timeand costs come into play, but our major rea-soning evolves around society’s changingmeans of communication. Print media,such as this newsletter, has a limited out-reach compared to Facebook and othersocial media outlets. In years past, printmedia was the only, and the best, communi-

cation method available to us to inform ourChamber membership and the public aboutbusiness news and events and the work ofthe Chamber. We realize if we want to con-tinue and expand the reach of Chambernews we have to continue refining ourmulti-faceted communication program. Wealso realize that we have a limited budgetfor print cost and personnel time requiredto administer all the different communica-tion outlets. In the coming months we willbe evaluating the different ways available tous to produce, print and distribute theChamber Matters newsletter, both as printmedia and digital media.

As we are evaluating our options of com-munication methods, we are evaluating thecontent of Chamber Matters. In the past,newsletter content has been a mixture ofentertaining and informational articles,

reports on events andhappenings and keep-ing you informed aboutcoming events. Withthis issue of ChamberMatters, our focus is toexpand our reporting ofnews from the business community. Weshare with you good news regarding effortsof the Economic Development Commission(EDC), happenings at CCC&TI, new busi-ness openings and opportunities to networkand learn more about doing business inCaldwell County.

he Caldwell County EconomicDevelopment Commission hostedits annual celebration on February16 at the J.E. Broyhill Civic Center

in Lenoir. With Gov. Pat McCrory as thefeatured speaker, the Caldwell EDC recog-nized local businesses and industries, whilealso marking the 175th anniversary ofCaldwell County.

The 2015 Industry of the Year Awardwas presented to wholesale lumber proces-sor and distributor Associated Hardwoods.In operation in Granite Falls since 1982, thecompany is made up of several subsidiaries,including Associated Hardwoods, Jordan-Holman Lumber Company, and Associated

Trucking. Overall, the combined operationsemploy more than 140 people.

Recently, the company announced sever-al major expansions, including the acquisi-tion of a Hudson site to allow additionalwarehousing capacity as well as fleet serv-ice and maintenance. By shifting its truck-ing operations to this new site, AssociatedHardwoods and its Jordan-Holman lumberoperation began the process of furtherexpanding its existing Granite Falls facility.With the added capacity, the companyhopes to dramatically expand production.The award was accepted by AssociatedHardwoods President Rick Jordan.

The 2015 Herman Anderson Award was

presented to Granite Falls Town ManagerJerry Church. A native of the Valmead com-munity, Church worked for nearly 30 yearsfor Broyhill Furniture, including a stint asinterim CEO, before being chosen for theGranite Falls post in 2009.

During his tenure, Church has assistedin a host of economic development projects,including Ccon Metals, Lubrimetal, NewFarm Road, Jordan-Holman, and KrystalEngineering. A graduate of CaldwellCommunity College and Technical Instituteand Appalachian State University, Churchhas been a member of the CCC&TI Boardof Trustees since 1996.

KRYSTAL ENGINEERING COMING TO CALDWELL COUNTY

Caldwell County will be the new home for KrystalEngineering – a high-tech manufacturing and processing com-pany that will be based in Granite Falls and ultimately employup to 100 people.

Founded by former Caldwell County resident MarkRauchfuss, the company engages advanced manufacturingprocesses to grow crystals that are utilized in advanced tech-nology, sensors, medical, aerospace, instrumentation, andindustrial applications. The end product is sold to originalequipment manufacturers (OEMs) aroundthe globe.

Caldwell County was selected for the project over sites inSouth Carolina and Virginia. N.C. Gov. Pat McCrory made theofficial announcement during a ceremony on February 16.

BAKERS WASTE EQUIPMENTRECEIVES STATE GRANT FOREXPANSION

Industrial waste container and compactor manufacturerBakers Waste Equipment has received a more than $400,000grant from the N.C. Department of Commerce to renovate itscurrent facility in Lenoir and expand its operations.

According to Bakers Waste Equipment President andOwner Ric Raines, the grant will allow the company to fully uti-lize its 300,000-square-foot location and to expand its marketreach for the company’s personal “Smarter Trash” product.

Located in the former Broyhill 55/3 plant, Bakers WasteEquipment will be hiring an additional 42 people as part of thegrant. The company began operations in Caldwell County in2014 after previously having locations in neighboring Burkeand Catawba counties. The renovations are expected to becompleted by the end of the year.

he Foundation of Caldwell Community College andTechnical Institute held its Annual Fund Campaign kickoffluncheon on Tuesday, March 1 at the J.E. Broyhill CivicCenter in Lenoir.

Featuring community leaders, campaign volunteers, and col-lege faculty and administrators, the event starts fundraisingefforts for the Foundation’s Annual Fund Drive. Peg Broyhill,Chair of the Foundation’s Board of Directors, offered openingremarks and welcomed the crowd of supporters. Broyhill alsoannounced the goal for this year’s campaign as $360,000. “Eachof you is a critical part of our success. You do an amazing job andyour work makes it possible for us to help so many individuals,”said Broyhill. Broyhill also introduced CCC&TI President Dr.Kenneth Boham, who is serving as this year’s Annual FundCampaign Chair. “We are honored and thrilled to have Dr. Bohamleading this effort. With his leadership we will blast through our$360,000 goal – our highest goal ever.”

Boham expressed his gratitude to those in attendance fortheir work on behalf of the Foundation. “You all are the peoplethat make this institution the excellent institution that it is. Youare the difference-makers,” said Boham. “Think of the thousandsof lives made better by the work that you have done – it’sabsolutely amazing.”

Deborah Murray, Vice Chair of the Foundation and Directorof the Caldwell County Economic Development Commission,spoke to the group about the value of CCC&TI in the community.“Over the past several years, our county has seen an increase inavailable jobs, new companies locating in our area and vacantbuildings put back into use. Our unemployment rate hasdropped to its lowest in decades,” said Murray. “We’ve seen thenew blended with tradition and once again we have a strong andgrowing economy. None of that would have been possible without

CCC&TI.”Broyhill introduced each of the team captains for this year’s

campaign. They are Dr. Kenneth Boham, Peg Broyhill, BarbaraFreiman, Wayne Keller, Joan McGee, Deborah Murray, Dr. MarkPoarch, Mary Frances Sullivan, Guy Walters, Marty Waters andBarbara Weiller.

Board priorities for this year’s campaign include funding forscholarships, the Dream Award Program, childcare, studentemergencies, academic support and professional development.
