Industrial dyes and pigmentsIndustrial dyes are used very often in many industries these days, so is the case of the pigments. Speaking of industrial dyes , which are basically coloring , ionizing and aromatic compounds are used in numerous applications in various industries. Dyes having the property of showing an affinity for the substrate . But should be used with caution because some industrial dyes are toxic and carcinogenic in nature. However , at present, colorants are applied in industries such as plastics , cement , cosmetics , rubber, paper , textile , medicine, to name a few . Some main varieties of industrial dyes listed in :

Pigments Dyes

1) Digital Printing Textile Dyes: In digital printing, jet nozzles or by computer controlled ink loaded drums are used. Physical surfaces on which the fingerprints are reproduced include plain paper, photo paper, plastic, cloth, etc. Popular varieties of dyes used for this purpose are acidic inks, dispersed inks , reactive inks , and inks to stain base.

2) Leather Dyes : Tanneries usually make use of about 50 to 100 different varieties of leather dyes . Each produces a different desired coloring effect on leather . The dyes used in this industry include direct , acid , mordant, reactive , and basic dyes , among others.

3) optical brighteners : also known as optical agents , optical brighteners are dyes which have the attribute of absorbing ultraviolet and violet region of the electromagnetic spectrum , which results in prominent re - emission of light in the blue region . This dye is not suitable for use in water ( as in the tank , etc. ) due to its toxic nature .

4) Sublimation dyes: These dyes are mostly applied in various types of printing . They can be found in several forms , such as inkjet inks , thermal transfer ribbons and laser toner . Sublimation dyes applied by the process called heat transfer . Its main varieties are acid , disperse , Cuba , direct and reactive .

Now, as you might have an idea about industrial dyes and their main varieties , we will discuss about industrial pigments and their types. Pigments are mainly the materials comprising a modification in the color of the transmitted light due to the attribute of the selective absorption of wavelength . The change in light transmission varies with the fluorescence , phosphorescence , and other forms of luminescence ,

in which a material emits light. Pigments are generally used in inks, paints , cosmetics , foodstuffs, etc. Today coloring Various types of pigments are commercially available , of which some primary types of pigments are given in :

1) CLC Pigments: cholesteric Liquid Crystal ( CLC) pigments are made from CLC films . These pigments are nowadays increasingly used in security machines and also as a deterrent to counterfeiting bank notes, legal documents, etc.

2) Fluorescent Pigments : These pigments have the quality to change the ultraviolet light in the desired color. They are the lifeblood of any type of fluorescent material. Fluorescent pigments are mostly used in textile , paper coating based solvent, and aerosol paints and coating .

3) Organic pigments : Organic pigments consist of solid particles that are insoluble in the application medium . There are two basic varieties of these pigments , namely , natural and synthetic . Organic pigments are generally used for purposes of coloring or coating ( protective and decorative ) in plastics , candles , paper, rubber materials , pharmaceutical products, etc.

4) Pigments Overseas : A type of inorganic pigments, which are non-toxic and non-irritant in nature. They are also one of the oldest varieties of pigments. They have two basic types , viz. Powder Blue and ultramarine violet. Ultramarine pigments find application in coating , dyeing , printing inks , cosmetics , and the colors of the artists.
