dear Readers

leather, one of the first man-made materials, has transformed from a necessary product into a luxury item, especially in the developed world. leather is employed in varied applications due to its wind resistance and exceptional abrasion quality features. The prime factors driving the demand for leather over the years comprise the higher disposable income of women, fashion consciousness, influx of innovative designs, affordable prices, and exposure through departmental stores. Increase in the proportion of women in the corporate world translates to higher demand for leather products such as document and office cases, briefcases, wallets, checkbook holders, and business cards holders. The demand for computer, mobile phone, and other accessory cases has also increased in recent years.

Indonesia whose population is happy to eat meat or animal producer’s potential quite precisely cut the leather industry and leather products difficult to develop, so this raises a question mark, while the leather and leather products manufacturers of the world, saw Indonesia is still a potential market for them.

In general, the characteristics of leather and leather products industries, among others the following: (1) Solid works; (2) Capital intensive, (3) Solid Technology, (4) manufacture of leather and leather products including the industry that are not environmentally friendly; (5) leather products industry consists of small, medium and large industry.

Indonesia leather tanning industry for about 70 percent shortage of raw materials. Therefore, the tannery businessmen asked the government to open the faucets to restrict imports and exports of raw skins to overseas. Each year, 67 factories and 120 tanneries tannery industries households in Indonesia shortage of raw material supply as many as 3 million pieces of cowhide and 15 million pieces of leather goat / sheep. In order for this industry to survive, the government we hope to induce the import of raw materials and pikel hides from all countries.

and, Naputo Bali, one of the Indonesian leather manufacturers, with high export products quality, produce a wide range of leather products for international market.

market review

INDONESIA AIMS 2014

TO BE THE CENTER OF MUSLIM CLOTHING INCLUDING LEATHER GOODS

Indonesia whose population loves to eat meat or animal products have great potential in leather industry with so many animals, especially cow, goat and sheep, being slaughtered for consumptions. However, this raises a question on why the Indonesian leather industry still finds it difficult to develop further while at the same time the world’s manufacturers of leather and leather products still sees Indonesia as a potential market for them.

The Industry ministry has targeted Indonesia to be the world’s center for muslim clothing in 2014. director General for Small and medium Industries, Euis Saedah said the fact that the world’s market demand was so great to be a model muslim clothing had become the main reason for the intention, including accessories made of leather.

market reviewThere is a quite alarming problem in the shoe industry, such as in the Cibaduyut footwear center, with the absence of capable human resources in shoe design. This is a contrast when 20 to 30 years ago Cibaduyut was a thriving footwear center but now there is only a handful of artisans remaining who can make shoes, not to mention old machines which need to be replaced.

another sets of problem is shortages of raw skin and auxiliary materials (glue, soles, accessories and others). This is due to limited supply of domestic raw skins and procurement of imported leather experiencing technical and administrative obstacles at quarantine agencies. Indonesian skins with good quality are mostly exported abroad.

High quality auxiliary materials are also mostly imported. Items which can be bought from within the country are usually glue, soles or poor-quality accessories.

Indonesia imports about 70 percent of raw materials for the leather industry. Therefore, Indonesian leather Tannery association (apKI) has asked the government to loosen import restrictions while at the same time limit raw skin exports.

Imports of raw skins are constrained by government regulations allowing imports only from countries which have been declared free from foot-and-mouth disease (Fmd). Imports from countries that are not free of Fmd has been stopped, such as from Brunei darussalam, Thailand, Vietnam and latin america.

In addition to restricted imports, the government has allowed the export of rawhide as many as 2 million pieces of cow rawhide and 5 million pieces of rawhide from goat and sheep. This has led to further shortage of rawhide for domestic leather industry.

If the demand of rawhide for domestic leather industry is met, then local leather industry would be able to develop further. Currently, only 60 million square-feet (sqf) of cowhide is available from a demand of 150 million sqf while for goat and sheep rawhide, the local supply is only 25 million sqf from a demand of 60 million sqf.

apKI believes that allowing imports from countries that are not yet declared as Fmd free, especially african and middle East countries, will not only meet all of those demands but will also expand the industry.
