Gumbaynggirr culture and the ocean:
a big day for mid North Coast students
350 students from seven mid North Coast schools used World Oceans Day as an opportunity to learn more about the Gumbaynggirr culture and the ocean’s central place in it. The students undertook a series of activities including local Indigenous calendar art, dance, didge, language and weaving. The day was supported by the Unkya Local Aboriginal Land Council, Scotts Head Public School, NSW Health’s Go4Fun children’s healthy lifestyle program and Ready Mob anti-smoking program.

Hello, Giinagay, Hai,
Ocean Day was a great success on Friday, with the students and
staff gaining a deeper understanding of the Gumbaynggirr people
who have occupied this land for thousands of years, forming one
of the largest coastal Aboriginal nations in New South Wales.
They were renowned as the ‘sharing people’ because their land
was so rich that food and other resources were commonly shared
with other nations.
Ocean Day is one step further on the path to mutual respect and
with understanding comes knowledge. Taking the time to learn
and experience Indigenous Australians cultural and customs
builds bridges to reconciliation. The ocean is significant
throughout the Gumbaynggir Country, as it is the Totem of all
Gumbaynggirr people connecting them all together. Thanks to all
involved a great time was had by all.
Working towards a School Vision
Whatever the context, the point is the same. If a group wants to
move forward, it needs to develop an understood and an agreed-
on purpose. Stopping to confirm common goals among the
various groups on our site will help our school community grow an
inclusive culture.
With student and parent input we are developing a strong vision
and mission statements that are helping our school reach a
common understanding. Our vision is our school's goal—where we
hope to see it in the future. Thanks to all the parents and SRC
students who are creating and positively building a shared
purpose. Thanks to the time and effort of Janet Granek for
guiding this process.
Thanks, yaarri yaraang, terima kasih.

Got It! Tip of the Week
Slow things down and tune in to how your child is feeling. You might
need to use your ears to listen to what she is saying; your eyes to no-
tice her face, her body language, and what is going on around her; your
imagination to put yourself in her shoes; your words to reflect back
what you hear and notice; and your heart, to feel what she is feeling.
Let her know that you understand and accept her feelings, and that all
feelings are OK. For example, you might say, “I think I would feel sad
too if I lost my favourite toy”.

Ocean Day
On Friday Medlow, Stuarts Point, Eungai Public Schools and Toormina and
Bellingen High Schools all came down to the Scotts Head reserve to celebrate
Ocean Day. We got to participate in awesome activities such as weaving,
dancing, listening to Dreamtime stories, making beeswax wraps and raising
awareness about pollution, learning Gumbaynggirr, playing at the park and
meeting new people and having a fabulous time.
By Elkie and Grace
Last Thursday and Friday our two teachers Lyndsey Caldecott and Deborah
Swan attended the EDUTECH Conference for teachers in Sydney at the
International Convention Centre. The conference is the largest teaching
conference held in the Southern Hemisphere with over 10,000 attendees.
Mrs C and Bu Deb had the opportunity to hear from a range of world class
speakers about the future direction of learning and teaching. They were able
to trial the newest forms of digital tools including virtual reality, spheros,
robotics and furniture for more flexible learning environments. They saw
demonstrations from HP, Dell, Google and Microsoft. It was a fantastic
opportunity for two teachers from a small rurally isolated country school to
see learning on a large scale.

Robotics Day
Last Tuesday Elkie, Jalaara, Dimity, Siska, Kasimir, Grace, Chloe and Kalahni
went to Melville High School to attend a robotics expo. Many schools attended
including Lake Cathie, Medlow, Stuarts Point and Melville. There were 4
activities. One was an Expo which is where you perform to the other schools
what you can do. In the others we got to trial VR (virtual reality) where you have
a phone and choose a theme then put on a mask that makes you feel like
you’re in a different place. We also completed a maze. We had to program our
robot to make its way around a maze and touch certain colour boxes, if you
touched the wrong it was a minus point. We had 50 minutes to complete each
task. We expected there to be only EV3S but there was dash and dots and
sphero’s too! It was lots of fun. Thank you to Mr Simpson for your assistance in
preparing and Mrs C and Jo Brady (Siska’s Mum) for driving us! We had an
awesome time. We also made a little video which we will share with school
soon! Mrs C is attending an EDUTECH conference soon so we hope she learns
lots more to share with us. By Elkie
