Patrons
SWAS has two patrons who continue the work of the late Dr Ern Manea AO, the inaugural patron of the South West Academy of Sport.
Dr Manea was a champion of regional development, health provision and an active supporter of a wide range of sports.
Rolf Stene AM
Rolf has been extensively involved in the development and enhancement of business, employment, community and sport in the South West for more than 30 years. As initiator and past president of the South West Chambers of Commerce and Industry, Rolf initiated the idea of creating the South West Academy of Sport, working with the late Wally Foreman to conduct the first feasibility plan. Rolf’s strong connections with South West sport include the establishment of the West Coast Athletic League, support of the Australian Rowing Championships at Wellington Dam and leadership of the Bunbury Golden Classic Committee.
Lyn Foreman
Lyn Foreman has been coaching athletics for almost 30 years. While her primary focus has been the elite athlete, she's also coached children as well as athletes with disabilities. Lyn was awarded the Australian Sports Medal for services to athletics in 2000 and is a life member of Athletics Australia, Athletics WA and Canning Districts Athletics Club. Lyn worked at WAIS (the West Australian Institute of Sport), initially as senior track coach and then as head coach of track athletics at WAIS. In 2013 Lyn put her energies into Run Jump Throw, a program which is run in primary schools across Perth.

The Program The South West Academy of Sport was formed to provide support for talented young athletes to help them reach state, national and international levels of competition.
An individual athlete support program and talent development pathways in Australian Football Rules, cricket, netball, tennis and hockey, give local athletes the best possible chance of making it to the top of their sport.
Access to top tier coaches, specialist training and services such as sports mental skills and nutrition, round out the program and present athletes with the skills to build a long and rewarding career in sport.

Professional Service Providers
The South West Academy of Sport (SWAS) has qualified professionals to help with the training and development of talented athletes in the South West of WA.
A key strategy in the delivery of support services to athletes is the register of providers in the areas of, but are not limited to:
• Sports Science • Sports Medicine • Sport Psychology/Mental Skills • Sports Nutrition • Sports Physiotherapy • Life Skills • Coach Educating • ASADA – Drug Free sport
Sports Science This involves an elevation of the overall physical fitness of the high performance athlete. It includes, amongst others, an assessment of cardio-‐respiratory endurance, muscular endurance, speed, muscular strength, power, flexibility and body composition and a sport-‐specific physical evaluation. The physical evaluation is conduction by qualified and accredited exercise scientists. The evaluation is conducted in accordance with standardised sports-‐specific physical testing protocols. After assessment and evaluation, practical recommendations for training are provided to the coach and athlete to assist in maximising performance potential.
Sports Medicine The medical screening included a general medical assessment and a sports specific assessment. An injury history and haematology screening is also recorded. This assessment is either conducted at an accredited testing centre or at the physician’s practice. The medical screening is conducted by doctors with a postgraduate Sports Medicine qualification from a University.
The results of this screen are strictly confidential. Prior written authorisation is required for; All medical interventions (including medication and surgery)
Sport Psychology/Mental Skills The psychological assessment is conducted with the aim of improving the athletes’ mental skills before, during and after competition. The focus areas include achievement motivations, visualisation, self-‐confidence, concentration and goal setting. A sport-‐specific Metal Skills Inventory forms a part of the initial assessment. Where appropriate the Sport Clinic Intake Protocol is also applied. Applicable interventions are recommended. In addition to mental skills training interventions are provided when indicated. The sports psychologist is also available for sessions with the athlete’s coach and his/her parents if applicable. Accredited sports psychologists and mental training consultants perform the psychological assessment. The results of this assessment are strictly confidential.
8
Sports Nutrition Sports nutrition assessment and interventions are to facilitate the athlete in optimising their diet for sporting performance throughout training and competition, to aid recovery post-‐exercise, achieve and maintain body composition goals and maintain their health (e.g. prevent infection, fatigue). Based on comprehensive assessments that take into account nutrition on training days and competitions days, dietary advice and nutrition education is tailored to meet the individuals’ needs. The athlete’s fluid requirements, nutrition supplements, meal planning and travel nutrition strategies are also addressed. If applicable, the dietician may also be available to liaise with the athletes’’ coach and his/her parents/guardians. The following services may also be available upon request; menu planning for travelling teams, liaison with food services personnel and hands-‐on shipping/cooking classes for the athletes. Accredited dieticians who have a BS in Dietetics conduct assessments and interventions.
Sports Physiotherapy Physiotherapy intervention covers aspects of prevention, therapeutic and rehabilitative services, which an athlete will derive, benefit from to optimise his/her performance.
Physiotherapy assesses the first level of the optimal sports pyramid, functional movement. This addresses stability, flexibility, mobility and core control.
If applicable further in depth assessments of athletes with niggling biomechanical injuries will be done and an exercise program will be developed to address these issues.
Ideally these assessments and preventative programs are undertaken in pre season or early in the athletes program. This allows the body to be ready for strength and conditioning (the functional performance level of the pyramid) and for the athlete to achieve optimal performance in their chosen sport.
Life Skills
SWAS together with the Department of Sport and Recreation and the WA Institute of Sport (WAIS) will ensure the delivery of a holistic Athlete Career and Education program, namely Developing Champions. This Athlete Career and Education program will be made available to all SWAS athletes. SWAS will be responsible for providing suitable dates and ensuring that all athletes are notified in advance of the program delivery dates.
Developing Champions The Department of Sport and Recreation (DSR) in partnership with the Western Australian Institute of Sport (WAIS) have created a life skills program for developing athletes. The DEVELOPING CHAMPIONS program is designed to assist the development of aspiring young athletes to gain personal development skills. The program has strong links with the Athlete Career and Education (ACE) program at WAIS.
The Developing Champions program aims to assist young aspiring athletes to engage in healthy behaviors and make positive decisions. This will enable athletes to successfully enter and then progress along the high performance pathway. The program will achieve this by developing athletes’ interpersonal and personal life skills and their ability to apply these skills within different contexts.
The program will be delivered to athletes in three stages consisting of development workshops and intensive servicing:
·∙ Stage 1: Foundations for My Success ·∙ Stage 2: Advancing along My Sporting Pathway ·∙ Stage 3: Strengthening My Skills
