Welcome to the 25th Annual IU Undergraduate Research Conference. We are so glad to have you! Throughout the day, we hope you’ll find IU Bloomington is a supportive community that seeks to empower and support undergraduate researchers. The IU Undergraduate Research Conference offers students an opportunity to showcase their work and to learn more about the types of research their peers are engaging in across the Indiana University system. We encourage all of you to listen, learn, and help build a strong community of scholars who we hope will go on to contribute to knowledge. We hope that you enjoy your time at the conference. Kelly Berkson, PhD Assistant Professor, Linguistics
Indiana University
Kelly Harper Berkson is an Assistant
Professor in the Department of Linguistics at
Indiana University, Bloomington, where she
runs the Phonetics and Phonology Lab
(PhonLab). Her research focuses on (1) field
work with under- and undocumented
languages and (2) phonetic and phonological
investigation of typologically rare speech
sounds. Dr. Berkson employs a multi-modal
approach (e.g. instrumental acoustic analysis,
3D/4D ultrasonography, perception and
corpus studies) to investigate the complex
connections between the physical
instantiation, perception/ interpretation, and
phonotactic distribution of typologically
under-represented sounds and sound
patterns. She is especially interested in
phonation type contrasts and nonmodal
sonorants, and prioritizes working with under-
and undocumented languages.
Dr. Berkson works mainly with Kuki-
Chin languages from the Tibeto-Burman
language family which are spoken both in Chin
State in Burma/Myanmar and by many of the
>25,000 Burmese refugees who call Indiana
home. Members of the Indianapolis Burmese
refugee community who are students at IU
have become essential members of Berkson’s
lab. Together with other graduate and UG lab
members, and faculty members from around
campus, they are helping to shape a
developing collaboration between IU speech
scientists and Indiana’s Burmese refugee
community. The twin goals of this work are to
develop linguistic resources (e.g.
documentary, analytical) and practical
resources (e.g. speech technology for use in
emergency rooms, literacy materials).
Dr. Berkson earned her PhD in
Linguistics and MA in Global Indigenous
Nations Studies from the University of Kansas,
and her BA in English from Vassar College.
