White River Wings
Summer is a promissory note signed in June, its long days spent and gone before you
know it, and due to be repaid
next January. ---Hal Borland
June 2016
The weather has finally
warmed up and the
opportunity to ride looks
better all the time. Just
keep in mind that when
riding you can dehydrate
very fast. So drink plenty
of liquids when you are out
enjoying the scenery.
Our last gathering was held
at Niehaus Appreciation
Days in Litchfield,
Illinois. Thanks to all of
Chapter M Members who
attended. Also, thanks to
the Illinois Chapters that
attended. The gathering
was well received by all
who attended. The "Male"
beauty contest was enjoyed
by all. (My, I never seen
so many hairy legs at one
time)!
Ask a friend to join us at
one of our gatherings.
They do not have to have a
Gold Wing or even ride to
attend. They will be
welcome by all of us. If
nothing else they can enjoy
a good meal at the Gasthof.
The ride to Litchfield was
mixed with rain on and off.
I did notice several Wings
from our chapter leaving
with new "Safety" lights.
You can never have enough
"Safety" bling and lights.
Due to several unexpected
reasons (including rain)
our scheduled ride
to The Land Between the
Lakes was postponed. It
will be rescheduled at a
later date.
With all of the Summer
activities going on,
include attending our
gatherings and other events
in your schedule.
Hope to see you at Chapter
M's gathering and other
events!!!!!!!!
Your Chapter Director,
Darrel

We in Indiana have a full month of May. Mother’s Day, Graduations, “The Indy 500” and most important of all GWRRA’S “Spring Wing Warm Up”. Parke County in Indiana was our destination and a little riding fun was our goal. Mainstreet Rockville supplied swag bags with coupons and items for all our attendees even the pets. We started with our dinner ride led by John and Shirley Lee. Rockville is their hometown and it was fitting that they led us through the area. We had a great turnout again for this pre-event ride. John and Shirley also led a “Dam and Covered Bridge” ride both days visiting 12 bridges and stopping for lunch. We also scheduled a ride to the feline rescue center both days. This is a popular venue in this area and our rides were well attended. Ed and Linda Feldt led a ride to Clinton Falls and through the scenic
countryside. Mr. Boatman led a ride through the area on many of the challenging roads. The Parke County visitor’s bureau supplied maps which maps out the bridges and scenic sites in the county. A few of our attendees took advantage of these to create a ride of their own. On Friday evening I led some of our water babies to Bridgeton, in a sprinkle, for Apple Dumplings and Ice Cream. The ride was a little damp, but the food and the band playing there were a nice treat. Many of the local residents were there dancing seemed like a weekly hotspot. With all the rides, a few games, and our vendors we had a relaxing time enjoying the peace and quiet. During the activities of the SWWU we may have overlooked some key people. Lonny and Karen Hunter were everywhere Lonny led a pre- breakfast ride and Karen covered the hospitality area. We had a large number of donations which helped us have plenty of snacks to munch on all weekend. Karen’s decorations were killer she hit the theme perfect made the mood for our meals and closing. Pat and Gerde McKee ran our jail which had many inmates. Pat was the Sheriff and his deputy Bruno walked all over the fairgrounds looking for the
people on his warrants. Gerde was the bailiff and made sure we had certificates for all our games and show winners. Bob Caldwell being one of the more entertaining inmates as people offered to pay his bail in pennies. Some offered to pay more to keep him locked up. We are a fun group. Deb Caldwell had a tough job keeping track of all the registrations and other funds as we held a silent auction and open auction on Saturday evening. All of my team members worked hard on their tasks and many had a chance to enjoy some of the rally. The few I mentioned above spent a great deal of time at the event and were not able to enjoy as much of the rally as I had hoped. Having everyone enjoy the rally is and will continue to be one of my goals. Even the staff should be able to have time to participate in the event.
Well SWWU is the starting gun for all the region summer events. I hope you can attend some of them and enjoy your time with your GWRRA family.

MAY DISCUSSIONS
1. Darrel opened the meeting with a silent prayer.
2. Darrel welcomed the members, visitors and recognized our Couples of the Year past and present and our Person of the Year. 2010-2011 COY Steve & Nancy Whitehead were in attendance.
3. Darrel thanked all the members who braved the weather to attend the Niehaus Honda Open House and attend the gathering.
4. Instead of a “Guess How Many” contest a Half-Pot drawing was held. One of the Illinois chapter visitors was the winner.
5. Darrel reminded everyone to check their membership expiration date on the check-in sheet.
6. Darrel and Don Holtz gave the safety report.
7. Darrel mentioned the newsletter has a new page called the MEMBER SPOTLIGHT. Marilyn will be asking a different member each month to fill out a short questionnaire and submit a couple of photos so you can be “in the spotlight”.
8. Everyone was reminded to keep saving those empty printer ink cartridges – Carol will take ANY empty ink cartridges; and your hotel toiletries will be donated for disaster relief again this winter.
There was not a Guess How Many contest in June.

It's Time to Prep Your Bike for a New Season Spring Riding: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
It’s Time to Prep Your Bike for a New Season
It’s time to ride. Winter has withered and spring has sprung. You’re yearning for the open road, eager to feel the
bracing breeze that heralds a new season of cruising the flats and carving through curves.
In short – it’s time to spruce up your bike for spring. Here’s a quick checklist of items to make sure everything is tip-
top before you hop on for your first spin.
Yet there’s one more duty to pay to the inactivity of the off-season. Like the lethargy you battle during the dark
months, motorcycles need their own metamorphosis from idleness to the return of that sleek mechanical marvel you
reluctantly retired last fall.
Fuel
Did you add a conditioner to the tank before you parked it for the winter? If not, try adding some now before you
crank it over. Between varnish from evaporation and moisture from condensation, your fuel could delay your spring
breakout. If your bike is tough to start and runs rough, you may need to clean the carb float bowls and possibly the
jets. Just think of it as getting up close and personal with your favorite machine. And next fall – remember the
conditioner!
Tires
Good rubber is one of your best friends. Check the tread for condition and wear. Starting the season with a new set
makes you feel like the bike is brand new again. And if you decide to squeeze out a few more miles on your existing
tires, be sure to check air pressure.
Plugs, oil change & filter
Spark plugs are only a few bucks. It’s well worth any hassle avoided by getting rid of worn electrodes. You don’t
even have to gap the new ones these days – they’re preset at the factory. New oil and a new filter are the cheapest
engine protection you can invest in. You’re talking your motor’s lifeblood here. Keep it strong.
Other fluids
When was the last time you checked your radiator? How about the brake fluids? Take a spin through your owner’s
manual for the recommended intervals. Here’s a rule of thumb – change out coolant once a year, or every 6,000
miles; brake fluid needs a change at least every two years – more often if your manufacturer recommends a
different schedule.
Battery
It’s a fact of battery life that they lose charge as they sit. If you’ve kept on top of a trickle charge throughout the
winter, chances are you’re in good shape. If not, allow several hours to give it a slow charge. Check the terminals for
corrosion and give them a shine if necessary.
Spring Riding: The Good, The Bad and The Ugly
It’s been a wild winter, so those who’ve been snowbound for months are more than ready to cure cabin fever with a
spring ride. But the legacy of all that snow, ice and cold can be a roadway fraught with hazards. On the flip side, the
pleasures of getting back in the saddle again are many and just in time to shake off all those dark and dreary days
with a big blast of sun.
The good
A large dose of riding is bound to be therapeutic because you’ll get back together with biking buddies. The
camaraderie of cruising is an unfailing way to lift spirits. The simple act of engaging in small talk about how quickly
your machines came out of winter storage, stories about your spring maintenance routine, comparing notes on little
things like where you’d like to take your first roadside lunch break – it all adds up to renewal of the solid friendships
you find in the riding world.
Add in a few other springtime factors and you’ll activate a sea of all those feel-good brain chemicals that runners
want you to believe can only be experienced through pounding the pavement. Gliding over the road feels great,
especially as you take in all the wildlife just awakened from their hibernation, all the budding flora in the process of
building up to vibrant spring blossoms – not to mention the hints of warmth in the air that promise a summer of riding
directly ahead.
The bad
Spring riding hazards can be very real. Here are a few to keep in mind:
The after effects of winter road treatment, chiefly salt residue and sand. These can derail your first ride in a very unpleasant
way. Watch for swirls of this stuff that can collect in depressions in the pavement and along road margins.
Potholes are a rite of spring we all could do without. Your first rides need to be cautious ones, at least until you generally know
where the potholes are or you can wait a while until they get filled in.
Watch out for patching material. Some invariably gets scattered across the road near the patched pothole and can be more
than a little unstable under your tires.
The ugly
Possibly one of the most difficult hazards to guard against in springtime is the automobile driver who has to go
through a retraining period before they are as watchful as they need to be of people on bikes. Most have gone
through an entire winter without seeing motorcycles. You should wear visible gear to help guard against not being
seen on the road. Finally, be sure to turn on that headlight and practice caution at intersections.
