Founded by Professor P.C. Mahalanobis in Kolkata on 17th December, 1931, the institute gained the status of an Institution of National Importance by an act of the Indian Parliament in 1959. Since then ISI has maintained its stature as the most renowned institute in the country in the fields of Statistics, Mathematics, Computer Science and other sciences. The undergraduate programmes offered by ISI are B. Stat. (Hons.) and B. Math. (Hons.). B. Stat. (Hons.), the flagship undergraduate programme of Statistics in India, is a three year programme offered at ISI Kolkata. The students are selected on the basis of an entrance examination, which is regarded as the best examination on Mathematics in India, followed by an interview. The successful completion of B.Stat. (Hons.) brings an opportunity to study M. Stat. at ISI which is the most revered post-graduate degree in Statistics in India. Students who complete a B.Stat.(Hons.) and a M.Stat from this institute end up in extremely important positions in both academia and industry across the world. During the entire courses of both B. Stat. and M. Stat., which are fully funded by the Government of India, students receive monthly stipends and annual contingency grant. The alumni of ISI are spread all over the world as leaders in their respective fields. Many of the students pursue their PhD in renowned universities like Harvard University, Stanford University, University of California Berkley, University of Chicago, Duke University, etc. Students who prefer to join the industry get placed to leading firms like GE, McKinsey and Co., Deutsche Bank, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley, etc from the campus. The average salary for the campus placements has been among the highest in India over the last two decades. Due to the increasing demand of statisticians in both industry and research, and owing to the uniqueness of the institute, the students usually have multiple career options to choose from at the end of their M.Stat course. Many students and research scholars of ISI pursued a career in academics, and have excelled in the fields of statistics, mathematics, probability theory, computer science and economics. S.R. Srinivasa Varadhan, the only Indian to win the Abel Prize (the equivalent of Nobel Prize in Mathematics) was a student of this institute. Sankar Kumar Pal, former director of ISI was awarded Padma Shri in Science and Engineering on 15 April 2013. In the last few years, a number of alumni and faculties has been awarded the prestigious Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar Award given by Council of Scientific and Industrial Research, Government of India.
