Appeal to Share the power of a wish®
Dear friends and supporters,
It gives me immense pleasure to present to you Make-A-Wish Foundation® of India’s Annual Report for the year 2008 – 2009. I am both proud and privileged to share with you our progress and commitment in spreading the mission of the Make-A-Wish Foundation across India and to introduce you to all our divisions.
Make-A-Wish Foundation® originated in the United States in 1980. It grew from the dreams of a young boy, Christopher Greicius, who wanted to be a highway patrolman. Chris’s mother along with the larger community moved heaven and earth to make his dream come true. Chris was sworn in as the first and only honorary Arizona Highway Patrolman in the history of Arizona. Inspired by Chris, and enriched by being part of the experience, his mother and some others who helped his dream come true, realized there must be other children like Chris who could benefit from their wishes being granted. Their inspiration was the beginning of the Make-A-Wish Foundation®.
In 1995, my wife Gita Joshi and I took our little son for treatment to the USA where Make-A-Wish Foundation® volunteers met us and went about fulfilling our son’s wish in a way beyond his imagination. A 6 day memorable visit to Disneyland®. Enthused by the joy and magic that the wish experience had brought into our lives in a difficult time and inspired by the memory of our little boy, we were determined to bring the same wish experience to children with life-threatening illnesses in India. Thus, the Indian affiliate was established in 1996.
Since the inception of Make-A-Wish Foundation® of India 13 years ago, we have made a difference by bringing hope, joy and happiness into the lives of more than 17000 wish children. This year alone, Make-A-Wish Foundation® of India has provided more than 2,576 wishes to children with life-threatening illnesses.
Our dedicated family of volunteers forms the backbone of our organization. Without the unstinting support of this immediate family, we would not be able to grant wishes or make dreams come true.
Our generous donors support us in cash or kind and enable and empower us to realise our mission and achieve the success we have today.
I am deeply indebted to, and look forward to your continued support and encouragement in the years ahead, as we take this amazing journey of wish fulfillment deep into the heart of India’s children.

VISION:
To be able to make a difference to the lives of maximum number of children who are battling life threatening diseases in India.
ABOUT US:
Make-A-Wish Foundation® of India is one of 33 affiliates of Make-A-Wish Foundation® International. The Indian affiliate was established in 1996 by Uday and Gita Joshi. On an average, out of the 5,000 wishes fulfilled each year across the globe, 2,500 wishes are fulfilled by the Indian affiliate alone, which is more wishes than any other affiliate country and that excludes the U.S. Since its inception in 1996 in India, the Foundation has fulfilled over 17,000 wishes with the support of various organizations, generous donors and the larger community. The Foundation has divisions in Mumbai, Ahmedabad, Hyderabad, Delhi, Coimbatore, Jaipur, Pune, Bangalore and Goa and intends to reach out to many more children across the country.

THE YEARS THAT WERE:
Over 13 years the number of wishes has grown substantially. The years between 2002 and 2006 also saw a major rise in the number of wishes between 2002 and 2006.
2008-2009 saw a lot happening at MAWFI.
No. of Wishes fullfill in last 3 year across categories
As we are aware, our wishes fall into four major categories. To have, To be, To meet, To go. Our maximum wishes fall in the “to have” category. This is easily understandable as India is still to a large extent, a country of have-nots. Our wish children come from all over the country to cities for treatment.
Sindhu was identified by the volunteers of the Bangalore division of Make A Wish Foundation of India. She was very fond of animals and wanted to have all animals as her pets. Her favorite animal was the elephant. She always wanted a baby elephant to play with.To fulfill her wish our volunteers took her to the zoo. After the usual tour of the zoo she was taken to a special enclosure where the zoo authorities had arranged for a baby elephant to met Sindhu. On seeing the baby elephant she was overjoyed and jumped with excitement. !

6 year old Shaily like all girls loved dolls, shoes, clothes but most of all she wanted to be a Teacher. The MAWF Ahmedabad Division team dressed her up as a little teacher, complete with a sari, jewelry, watch, handbag and spectacles. On the 20th of August, 2008, Shaily went to meet the Principal .The shyness and nervousness disappeared after Madam gave her some chocolates. Shaily “Madam” was then introduced to her Jr. K.G. class, who were overjoyed at having a teacher just a little taller than themselves; teach them songs and the alphabets.
Jayashree was a very quite and sober girl who always seen alone and kept all by her self. One day while talking to her our volunteers heard her sing a tune. When they asked her about it she said that she was very find of music and was particularly fond of a harmonium which she would like to have for her. Our volunteers then took her to the music store where she could try our the various models of harmoniums and finally she chose the one that she found most comfortable to operate. She was very happy to have her own harmonium and thanked the foundation and volunteers for fulfilling her wish.
Volunteers of Make A Wish Foundation of India, Ahmedabad div met Darshan at the local hospital where he would come for his treatment for Leukemia. His favorite star was Akshay Kumar. Darshan admired Akshay a lot and had seen all his films many times over. He also keenly followed Akshay’s serial on T. V. titled “Khatron Ke Khiladi” (This is a local adaption of the English serial Fear Factor). To fulfill Darshan’s wish, he was specially flown down to Mumbai for a day and Mr. Kumar was very kind to sponsor the tickets for Darshan and his father. Darshan was very happy at meeting Akshay and he did not know what to say for the first few minutes. Akshay then broke the ice and made Darshan comfortable and took him around the set of the shooting and showed to him some of the tricks of photography. Darshan was truly impressed by his lead actor and enjoyed every moment of his meeting with Akshay Kumar.
