It was definitely no cakewalk but months and years ofsweat and determination.After the completion of InternalMedicine Residency in Brooklyn,at Wyckoff Heights Medical Cen-ter, an affiliate of Cornell Univer-sity, Dr. Brar spent the next threeyears of training as a Cardiologyfellow at University of California,Irvine. Contd. from B1 diagnostic procedures such as stresstests, echocardiograms and angiogramsto assist in the management of each in-dividual patient,” she says.Explaining her subspecialty shesays, “As a Cardiac Electrophysiolo-gist I am also trained in the branchof cardiology that specializes in theadvanced management of cardiacarrhythmias (also known as palpi-tations or irregular heartbeats).That specialty includes manage-ment through medications and/orspecialized procedures such as elec-trophysiology studies and ablationsto modify the electrical system ofthe heart. An important goal of elec-trophysiology is prevention of sud-den cardiac death that can occur sec-ondary to advanced heart disease(congestive heart failure) with theimplantation of devices such as int-racardiac defibrillators. TheBiventricular pacemaker implant-able cardioverter defibrillator is an-other device that allows for patientsto have improvement in their qual-ity of life in the setting of severecongestive heart failure.”Discussing the major cause of heartdisease among Indian-Americans,Dr. Brar explains, “ heart disease

Socially encouragingfamily and friends to practice pre-ventive health care and seek earlymedical attention is the very ba-sis to reducing the incidence ofadvanced medical problems inthe Indian population. ‘’Giving valuable advice and prac-tical tips to Indian–Americans re-garding their heart health,She says, “Managing heart healthstarts with living a balancedlifestyle. Indian cooking usuallyinvolves a large amount of veg-etables which provide essential

As she says, “I had the opportunity to learn fromamazing professors who would ac-cept nothing less than excellence.The vast spectrum of disease andthe focus on diagnostic skills mademy early training a unique experi-ence. These clinical buildingblocks are utilized by me daily.Although it was difficult to leavemy family, studying in India af-forded me precious time spentwith my grandparents and aidedin my maturation as an Indianwoman. The fact that I completedmedical school immediately afterhigh school was also an advantageas it allowed me to complete mytraining in 5 years. Although I amof Indian origin and have had atraditional upbringing, I was stillconsidered an American graduatestudent (foreign student) studyingin India. Following the comple-tion of my medical school training,I was considered to be a foreigngraduate when applying for medi-cal residencies in the United States.The more prestigious residency pro-grams are usually available to USmedical school graduates.”Coming to future plans she is veryhappy to be a partner in a well re-spected cardiology group and hopesto maintain her teaching affiliationswith both UCLA and UC Irvine.“ The population is aging andskilled physicians will be a criti-cal component of maintaining thepopulation’s health. My goals forthe future are to continue to helpall people improve their healthand overall well-being. This willafford them more quality time tospend with their loved ones.
