WELCOME FROM THE FESTIVAL CHAIRPERSON

Dear Parents and Participators,

Thank you for joining us for this, the twenty first Somerset Festival for Young Performers.

Each year we see so many talented and enthusiastic performers each having spent many hours in rehearsal

for their performances at the Festival. We hope you will all find the experience both challenging and

rewarding. The Festival is conducted to provide encouragement for young children as they perform in

what we hope is a safe and collegial environment, providing a stimulus to continue studies in their chosen

field.

The opportunity to grow from participating in performance should be seen as a reward in itself.

We thank each participant for sharing their developing skills and talents and hope they will be left with a

sense of achievement and pride in their hard work and effort.

An event such as this does not just happen. Many hours of planning and preparation are involved. On

behalf of all participants and their families our sincere thanks go to the Festival Programme Director, Mrs

Helen Little and her band of helpers, especially the Somerset College Events Team, for their hard work,

the speech and drama teachers and the instrumental music teachers of Gold Coast schools for their

support.

Similarly I thank all members of the organising committee who have worked to ensure the smooth running

of the Festival again this year. I extend to the many volunteers who have contributed to make the Festival

a success my sincere thanks.

To our participants, simply enjoy the experience!

Masterclass Facilitators

SHANE DOWNEY is the principal audio engineer and artist development mentor at Parallel

Harmony Studio. With over 20 years’ experience in song writing, spanning across a variety of

musical genres, Shane is highly skilled in lyric writing, song structure and music composition.

Shane is currently commissioned through the Studio to compose orchestral tracks for a variety of

American reality TV shows such as MTV Pranked and Animal Planet. He is very excited to be

able to share his experience and wealth of knowledge.

CHERONNE McDERMOTT brings with her 35 years of song writing knowledge and feels that

she is now starting to write her best songs, after all the experiences she has had to date. As a child,

her song writing skills developed through writing poetry. She uses her poetry and song writing as

a way to make sense of the world around her and connect with it. Cheronne began collaborating

with other musicians in her teens and this led to opportunities to writing songs for musicals for a

variety of youth performances and church events. She is the main lyricist on all the songs of her

band’s upcoming album, making this a perfect time for Cheronne to be able to share her current

song writing journey with you.

A proud supporter of the Somerset Festival for Young Performers

The Circle Project Inc. is a not-for-profit music association with a particular emphasis and

commitment to working with youth.

The association’s main income stream relies heavily on funding from corporate sponsorship and

government grants. It is with this assistance that the association is able to provide subsidised

recording rates, mentoring, workshops and programs to its members.

The Circle Project is the brainchild of Gold Coast Entrepreneur and Director of Parallel Harmony

Pty Ltd, Marta Fergusson. The association is managed by a committee of seven members

consisting of musicians, local politicians, community workers and corporate professionals.

Marta brings more than 20 year’s experience in sales, marketing, event management and business

management. She was previously the Director of Primo Events, specialising in music festival

coordination and management. Marta is also a singer and musical theatre performer.

“The analogy between a circle and music suggests that the curve in a circle which traces from

silence and makes its way around to sound, can be the constant which becomes the music in all

our lives,” said Ms Fergusson.

“It is important to note the role that music plays in the lives of young people and how music can

empower and encourage them to build their self-esteem,” she said. The Circle Project operates

within Parallel Harmony Studio – a state of the art Recording and Production facility in Robina.

“Australia is known for its unique contribution to the global world of music and it is through

innovative initiatives such as the Circle Project that our local music industry will continue to

grow and develop,” Ms Fergusson said.

The aims and objectives of the Circle Project are:

1. To facilitate mentoring and educational programs for emerging artists and musicians, with a

strong community focus on youth

2. To provide cost effective music production and recording services

3. To facilitate creative opportunities and hope for youth which encourage self-worth and self-

esteem, through music.

4. To empower musicians of all ages to be proactive within their local community by engaging in

community based service activities and events.

The services which the Circle Project provides will be marketed nationally with a major focus on

South East Queensland. It will be involved in numerous local and national community ventures,

providing further marketing and promotional opportunities to its musicians and members.
