For us, architecture and design is more than business. It’s the way to improve the world, make it more convenient, comfortable and beauti-ful, and implement our creative ideas

Since the day of its launch in 2008, IND architects has been working with design of residen-tial and public buildings and office space interiors. Our strengths are: individual attention to every client, flexibility and quick decision-making, comprehensive approach to archi-tecture and design, thorough researches and quality analysis at all project phases, ability to promptly respond to market requirements.

Among the clients of IND architects are those who create demand for high-quality architec-ture: real estate development corporations, businessmen, public officials.

Amir Idiatulin Architecture is our passion. I guess many people choose this oc-cupation to see how they can influence the environment. Is there a better way to leave a mark for decades than to design and construct a building? Nevertheless, a high-quality project is not just about creativity; it involves a profound under-standing of business processes, society, trends; one needs to be a kind of a fu-turist to create architecture that will be demanded for a long time. We endeavor to stay on the edge of new technologies and trends, keeping our eye on the world tendencies. Often we go abroad to learn architectural novelties and study news on architecture in Moscow. We involve economists in our pro-jects because we realize that economics gives rise to new attractive functions that never perish.

Andrew Sidorov Apart from the economists, we also involve transport spe-cialists who calculate transport loads for our projects. We’re also in a close contact with brokers and marketers because object branding has a strong in-fluence on the inner navigation which is a kind of object interface. We always favor collaboration with the specialists in all fields, our projects benefit from it. An architect’s task is to “conduct” this process because it’s the architect who assimilates all the information.

Ravil Murakov We took part in several international contests in collabora-tion with American, French and Italian bureaus. Undoubtedly, it broadened boundaries of our world. Previously, we thought it was enough just to com-plete a list of a client’s demands. Now we propose new ideas, go outside our technical assignment. We offer and justify some nontrivial solutions. We con-duct research and show the way something similar was implemented in oth-er countries.

Work under the competitive project of Shcherbin-ka water tower redevelopment has begun with acquaintance to history of the place and commu-nication with residents of the area. It turned out that the Tower is very symbolical for them. The building around has been constantly changed, but the Tower remained the same, so for peo-ple it’s associated with their children’s memoirs, personality formation and important emotions. From discussions we have concluded the strate-gic decision — we are going to perform the most delicate work with the building and try to keep the tower’s silhouette. For this purpose we have lifted the multipurpose hall — it is located on the second floor, having left the tower basis open. In uniform style with the volume of the second floor, the add-on is made that increases the tow-er height a little, makes it more noticeable and at the same time increases the operational ar-ea — basically, the co-working zone will be right there. When we have lifted the volume, we creat-ed two entrance groups, comfortably organized, protected from rainfall. We parted human streams using the classical scheme — visitors come into the elevator (the elevator shaft is taken outside the initial Tower volume), get up to the last floor and then they go down by stairs, examining the exhibition. We have filled new overlapping and created the Tower floors. In total there are six of them. In the

Tower permanent and temporary exhibitions will be showed, and walls will act like show-windows for current events. In the multifunctional hall there can be exhibitions, meetings, conferences, neighborhood events held. In warm season con-certs and sport events can be organized here — a part of the hall facade, a big shutter, can be opened, allowing music to extend. Initially we were planning this shutter in order that there was a possibility of delivery of large exhibition samples, but then we decided that it is also an excellent way of communication of the Tower with environment. That is how we got the idea of concerts and performances in warm season. One of the concept main elements is light. In the daytime the building absorbs light, so the inter-nal space is filled with natural lighting thanks to the fact that the hall is lined with opaque glass — u-glass, this light will disturb nobody, being soft, streaming, showing the silhouettes of people in-side from the outside. At night, on the contrary — the building becomes a light source, radiates a soft luminescence, so the strangers walking by will see the silhouettes of visitors. The building is equipped with dimmable illumination of u-glass lamels, so it will be possible to regulate bright-ness so that light didn’t disturb the nearby hous-es. The architecture attracts people, telling them that there is something interesting going on, in-viting them to join it.

COMMUNICATION OF THE TOWER WITH ENVIRONMENT

One of the major tasks which we set for ourselves is to attract people. We developed various scenarios of the Tower usage which have formed the basis of func-tional zoning and space-planning structure. We found it really important to reactivate the object, make it alive, active space again.

Modern subway, inspired by nature. Combina-tion of the rapid lines and smooth forms, tran-quillity and dynamics, cold gray and rich brown. The balanced contrast

NAGATINSKYZATON METRO STATION CONCEPT

Just like it often happens in nature, complicat-ed things sometimes pretend to be simple, and simple things at first can seem complicated. The the Nagatinsky Zaton metro station concept is the same, in its basis there are circles converg-ing to the center, simple forms reflecting compli-cated evolution process which has happened in this area and in this city. The thing is there were small lakes here before, and later the new river-bed of the Moskva River has been formed, and everything that’s left from the old area is this is-land. The island is our concept basis. On the is-land there are a lot of beavers, they even call it Bobrovsky island, and sure, there are a lot of dumped trees here, too. A tree and its rings by which it is possible to see its age and history — this is the concept basis, too. Moscow with its development by rings, radial roads and lines of the subway are essence and basis of the concept too. Besides, the new station will be a part of the third transfer ring. So, these rings which might seem simple at first, actually reflect a huge num-ber of events and details, important for histo-ry of the place. The color palette and materials solution are also inspired by the area nature. Two colors are the basic ones — very quiet gray, just like smooth water surface, and rich brown, like trees and bushes. Porcelain tile panels with tex-tural concrete and ceramic plates with texture of

corten steel are used both for the platform and lobby interior. Rings form the station interior — passengers are met by round cash desks, circles decorate the station pavilion. The volume solu-tion of rings makes the station expressive and gives it additional scale, forms depth — walls of the station platform are decorated by con-vex half rings, benches are organically inscribed in part of them. The ceiling and the wall of the platform are lined respectively with corten steel-like metal and ceramic plates of similar structure. This solution strengthens depth and creates bright contrast. The station lobby has the strict and structur-al form. To provide this, accent and decorative lighting is used. In general the project means compex light decisions thanks to which addi-tional volume is created and the comfort of passengers is increased. The ground pavilion is performed in the form of strict and simple vol-ume in which the rings forming the entrance portal are inscribed. Imposing of rings forms the pavilion entrance group. This particular solution looks modern and at the same time sends us to the history of subway construction. The main material in the pavilion finishing is polished con-crete. Infrastructure is also subordinated to the main concept — the rings which are laid out by stone blocks, narrowing to the pavilion entrance.

A competition project of Klenovyi Bulvar metro station

KLENOVYI BULVAR METRO STATION CONCEPT

Elchin Safarli When I return, be at homeThe sky is a great equalizer. From the subsur-face of earth chaos all you have to do is look up and remember: life doesn’t give any obligations, it has no debts, but it always keeps on running. This truth will become clear as soon as you elim-inate the hustle in your head. I fell in love with white sky wanderers when I was six years old: on my way to school I saw the sunbeam working through a huge cumulus cloud. That’s something I could easily lie on — I thought. It reminded me of my shaken-up goose down pillow — lush and snow-white, in a crackling pillowcase. The Kle-novyi Bulvar station project is full of metaphors. First of all, it’s located near the Kolomenskoye Park the territory with a large number of histor-

ical buildings. The temple metaphor is formed tacitly, and analysis of separate architectur-al elements such as arches leads us to the or-igin of the subway which was built in order to become a symbol of reflection of that epoch and also to such concept as palaces for the peo-ple. During the construction process of the sub-way temple architecture elements were often used, architects see those arches as a metaphor of clouds and sky over the head, that’s why the project concept suggests to treat the project with a dream and poetry, to rethink the subway in whole as immersion under the ground and to imagine that we’re plunging into clouds giving us the feeling of easiness, lightness and remind us of this historical place solemnity.

Building improvement in Moscow downtown is a complex glass volume accented with green areas. A rich functional program applying each building level at its best

BUILDING IMPROVEMENT AT NOVIY ARBAT

Building reconstruction requires from archi-tect even more efforts as compared to creating a new object, as it is essential to take into account not only customer’s requests, environment, city and inhabitants, but a building’s history and its last designation, and smoothly blend new el-ements into existing ones. Architectural and planning concept of the building improvement in Moscow downtown makes a new filling of the existing building framework. Each building lev-el is occupied with a new designation; they may exist independently or in association thanks to the developed system of vertical ties. Build-ing layout includes maximum possibilities – the underground level is occupied with retail, the ground floor also includes retail areas and con-ference-hall lobby. There is a conference center for events of various scope on the first floor. The second and the third floors are intended for co-working, the fourth and the fifth floors are for co-living provided in 62 residential units with

sprawling common living areas and kitchens. The sixth and the seventh floors are for offices, the eighth floor contains restaurants with a rooftop entrance where during a warm period there is a terrace with a panoramic downtown city views. Under the courtyard there is a two-level parking for 22 parking lots, and 23 rooms in the apart-ho-tel located in existing separate building. The architecture is distinguished with a complex plastic façade – first, glazing is coming forward the current frame hiding the structural element, then, on the contrary, steps on for it forming niches of landscaped areas. Ground floors are open and transpicuous as much as possible. The main materials are transparent and matte glass, ferrous metals. The interior is also designed as an intersection of the old and new style. Exist-ing columns, beams and ribbed ceiling panels are cleaned from covering and remained as-is, their massive is emphasized by light accents and a great number of plants.

A crystal-inspired image. A bright architectural form in balance with outrush of metropolitan life

RESIDENTIAL COMPOUND SHOWROOM CHKALOV

The architectural concept of the project is based on a crystal—not only is it an attrac-tive symbol that can be identified with success, light and solemnity, but it is a many-sided ele-ment too. Each edge of the crystal catches the light and reflects its own reality. Chkalov is a ho-tel complex showroom that will combine sev-eral functions. It will have a trading segment and residential apartments and will offer the visitors an opportunity to come in touch with modern art. In addition to considerable capa-bilities of the hotel complex, one of the edges of the crystal reflects its economically advan-tageous location: proximity to a transportation hub (several subway stations are nearby), an ar-tistic pool (ArtPlay and the Winery), and trad-ing floors (Atrium mall). Chkalov perfectly fits in the urbanscape and becomes its centerpiece that merits attention of millions of citizens. A distorted exterior can be seen from afar. This is facilitated specifically by bright light pouring through the building. The principal front is made of solid glass—it is open, friendly and mod-

ern. Light is instrumental in shaping the image of the building—it flows not only from the glass facade, but from perforated metal panels too that face the protruding edges of the facade. They glow and accentuate the urban dynamics of the complex creating a perfect combination of Chkalov and cityscape with its fast and flash-ing car lights. The roomy entrance lobby and the client service area are on the first floor. An Illuminated mock-up model of the future com-plex is on the first floor, too. Offices for staff and a large meeting room are on the second floor. Geometrical shapes predominate in the show-room’s interior. Distorted lines, perforated metal panels, the unity of external and internal. It feels very roomy and airy inside the showroom due to a glass facade and the building layout—when entering the showroom a visitor finds him- or herself in the atrium. The liveliness of the interior is accentuated by lamps that are arranged in clean lines on the second floor ceiling and look like they are dashing forward.

The concept of multimodal transport hub for air, river and land transport. City in miniature inspired by nature and its forces

HIGHWAY MULTIMODAL TRANSPORT HUB

For a big city, multimodal transport hubs are necessary, so why not to create a complex not just combining different types of transport, but also to provide citizens with maximum com-fort. The concept of multimodal transport hub at Leningradskoye Highway is developed for three modes of transport: air – helicopter airdrome with landing site and sheds with a possibility to keep, to provide technical maintenance and to refuel helicopters as well as with flight school, water – there is a stop for river transport and yacht-club, and land – terminal point with a platform for buses. There is also a large in-tercept parking for cars and built-in surface car parking for future users of the multimodal transport hub. Careful attention is paid to useful social and entertaining functions of the multi-modal transport hub – a complex of apartments and hotels, retail areas, restaurants, cafes, fit-ness-center, pontoon swimming pool will pro-vide various activities. Pontoon swimming pool is located directly in the river water area; it is also can be used during a cold season – the swimming pool is covered by special air-sup-ported structure and transferred into covered pool. Shaping is suggested by nature and its

forces: rocks and wind grinding them for centu-ries and giving them a perfect shape. Facades of hotel’s and apartments’ high-rise volumes have 1-2 floors horizontal articulation resembling ground layers formed under the influence of air and water. The main material is glass with dark gray metal profile. Matte, corrugated glass with a gradient transition to transparent is used on the facades of the helicopter airdrome. Con-struction footprint is formed by city planning restrictions: sanitary area from power lines and coastal nature conservation area. The river em-bankment and the square in front of the hel-icopter airdrome terminal are connected by covered street with shops and cafes. Entranc-es to the apartments are located separately; platforms with active landscaping for residents are arranged on the stylobate roof. We analyz-ed business potential of the multimodal trans-port hub and therefore the concept provides a complex of apartments instead of a business center – this solution is influenced by overload-ed Leningradskoye Highway and proximity to Sheremetyevo Airport. To optimize financial ex-penses, we don’t make underground parking and place landing site for helicopters on the roof.

ELK ISLAND CITY OUTLET

Fashion-inspired architecture – glowing core, as a metaphor for festivity and importance of the image, is demonstrated from behind the “drapery” of flexible facade

Russia,Moscow

26 645 m2 2015

“Losiny Ostrov National Park” is a modern and bright outlet, which stands out well against the background of the existing landscape. Archi-tecture creates a fashionable image when fash-ion-history begins with the urban landscape.Architecture of the shopping center is inspired by fashion, with its ability to be both changea-ble and constant – there are images that inspire designers for centuries. Conciseness, flexibility and rigor are reflected in the image of the complex. Fabric, with its abili-ty to change, while maintaining its pattern, is the basis of facade flexibility. Flexible mesh of the facade is changing: at the edges of the building it is denser and deeper, and in the central part

it is aligned, resembling folds on the fabric. The outer facade, like a drapery, envelops the to-tal volume of the complex, revealing to visitors a glowing central core surrounded by greenery, resembling an island. This core reflects the name of the center. Ground floor of the facade is finished by fibrous concrete in anthracite color; in above there is perforated metal with integration of the media panels within the facade subsystem. Through the media panels, the building itself informs vis-itors of key messages and creates the effect of video mapping. Glowing core forms a festive atmosphere, emphasizes the dynamics of the facades.

KIND HOUSE

A medium that helps. Easiness of access, friendly interior, spacious public areas

Russia,Moscow

2 608 m2 2017

When you need all your stamina, when every drop of energy is of vital importance, when you strug-gle and haven’t won yet, then the very world, na-ture, people, environment, and architecture want to help. The Kind House is neither a hospital nor a hotel, it’s a temporary house for little resi-dents. It is cozy, friendly and comfortable. This is the place where everyone understands you be-cause they are in a similar situation or because they care deeply about helping. The House had to be child-scaled and focused on a positive me-dium. These were the main design principles for the project. The building is located in an environ-mentally friendly place. Much attention was paid to the interrelation between architectural and natural components. All windows offer forest views, while a courtyard unites the common ar-eas. The courtyard nurtures a friendly, open and welcoming spirit of the place. We were eager to create a medium that fosters the development of children and encourages them to strengthen their communication skills. There are many com-mon areas in the House where children commu-nicate with one another, do sport, create, take rest, and get to know the outward things. There is a lot of glazing in the building, bringing chil-dren closer to nature. Even though they can-

not go out now, they can still imagine being out there, outdoors, or watch other children playing or walking. Spacious game rooms allow arrang-ing indoor activities, while a swimming pool and a gym help keep fit. The openness of the space is ensured by the courtyard and stained-glass win-dows. Two wings of the building are connected by a suspension bridge. Any part of the build-ing is easily accessible for wheelchairs. There are 19 rooms in the house in total, which can ac-commodate 50 young residents. There is a large meeting room in the house, apart from kitchens, canteens, sports and play areas. Utility rooms are arranged in such a way that they are con-venient to store wheelchairs. The color scheme of the House interiors and fa-cades is composed of natural hues. Emerald glazed bricks are the accent of the facade. Wood is abundantly used in the facing and inte-riors; this material is eco-friendly and is pleas-ing to the touch. All amenities and the building itself are focused on a child’s contact with the outer world. There is a garden of sensations here where plants are lifted, which helps kids, includ-ing physically challenged ones, feel comfortable.

THE FARM MARKET

The Farm is a farmers’ market in the heart of the town. The reconstruction of shopping floor spaces and creation of a modern space that meets all demands of citizens

Russia,Zelenograd

2 600 m2 2016

‘The Farm’ is the new mall space on the map of Zelenograd with an impressive history. In case of a reconstruction, the words ‘new’ and ‘history’ come together in one project. A modern farmers’ market in the place of a traditional Soviet-time ‘Small Wares’ supermarket revives the space and makes it more in-demand and relevant. We changed the function of the space―we offer the residents a market with a unified architectur-al concept now instead of a store packed with multifarious stalls. The market is comprised of zones with various product lines, from dried fruit to live fish. This is the perfect place to quickly buy any foodstuff you need or just casually walk around choosing the best of the best. You can make an appointment with your friends on one of the benches at the entrance of the building and then hang out together at one of the ca-fes on ‘The Farm.’ Having changed the function and interior, we modified the building’s exteri-or, too. The facade became more modern. The main component of the facade is a symbol that

has been traditional for markets’ architecture since ancient times―an arch. The arches are ar-ranged all round the first floor. The arches ‘wel-come’ visitors and create a certain atmosphere. The arches are made of copper-cased metal fins. A combination of copper fins and stained-glass panels of the first and second floors chimes in with loft-style interiors of the building rich in wooden details. Stained-glass windows liter-ally allow more light and room in the market premises—glazing of space under and over the canopy enabled expanding the area size of the market. The territory around the building plays an important role in the perception of the build-ing. We improved the outdoor area of the mar-ket: large full-circle benches were arranged at the entrance, pathways were paved with sever-al kinds of granite. Visitors can easily get to “The Farm’ by bikes. The market offers a bike parking in addition to separate cycle lanes. Parking places for cars are provided for, too.

CONCEPT OF NUCLEAR POWER PAVILION AT VDNKH

A bright and vivid concept of Rosatom’s pavilion at VDNKh. The project that can attract millions of visitors through expressive architecture and a busy program

Москва 18 200 м2 2015

In 2015, IND architects studio took part in the contest for creating a Nuclear Power Pavilion at VDNKh as part of a consortium with FR-EE, an American architectural studio. We created a vi-brant and eye-catching concept that qualified for the finale of the contest. In total, six archi-tect bureaus and consortiums were shortlisted for the final out of 49 submitted projects. The concept of the pavilion, which we called the Re-actor, is based on a particle that forms the ba-sis of everything in the world, including nuclear power— an atom. Similar to an atomic nucleus, a building rests on a sphere, which is the center of a busy program. A vast roof with large exten-sions sweeps into the park and invites visitors in. A transparent and flexible space encourag-es engagement and interaction—the pavilion of-fers a panoramic view of VDNKh, as the walls are transparent and there are no columns. There is meaning in every inch of the interior space. Not only can visitors learn more about Russia’s nu-clear industry here, but they can immerse in its history, get to know the present and become a part of the future as well. Three levels of learn-ing are scattered over the pavilion’s storeys, people move by a spiral path, from the first level (the past) up to the very top. This is a metaphor of atomic orbits. Participants of the exhibition get integrated into the concept and become its integral part for the whole time they stay inside.

People can be seen from outside the pavilion and, through their movement, interest and en-ergy, they invite other visitors of VDNKh to join an engaging scientific and entertaining jour-ney through time. The Reactor’s tectonics looks like the arched structure of the Space Pavilion and brings to mind a one-of-a-kind silhouette of the USSR Pavilion at the Montreal’s Exhibi-tion of 1967. The pavilion fits in VDNKh’s current architectural image but offers the visitors way more than they can see from the park. The un-derground levels are used very actively—long- and short-term exhibitions are held here; there is a panoramic lecture hall here, too. A crea-tive laboratory, a library, show-rooms (includ-ing those that engage a visitor in an interactive scientific game), and a restaurant, which offers a panoramic view of the park, are arranged on the ground levels. Under the dome, visitors of the Atomariy (the core of the building) will get incredible and unique experience. The illusion of collective generation of energy is embod-ied here—every visitor starts his or her own cir-cle that tends to other circles, and this creates a breathtaking effect. The concept of the pavilion from FR-EE and IND architects shapes an image of Russia’s nuclear industry as a contemporary and innovative sys-tem, builds up the reputation of the sector and promotes the spread of knowledge across the
