Jani McConnell, CPP Class of 2023, was featured in the Las Cruces Sun News feature magazine, HealthyU, in an article entitled “A Leap of Faith” in which she demonstrates a few jumps and vaulting moves of a new sport called Parkour. Parkour is an activity that combines the discipline of martial arts with the carefree play of childhood. We should all be so energetic!!

In my final year of high school, prior to my undergraduate experience, I was eager to begin earning my Doctor of Pharmacy. However, with the intensity of the course load, I knew that this wasn’t go-ing to happen anytime soon. Despite this, I was able to arrange my pre-requisite years to finish a semester early. I approached my mom letting her know I would have a free semester and could either work or study abroad. I couldn’t even finish the sentence when my mom interrupted me and told me I had to study abroad! Studying abroad had always been a dream of mine which became a reality. I never thought I would be able to study abroad but after looking into it, I realized it was not that far out of my reach. I am currently living in the south of Spain in the gorgeous city of Sevilla. I am taking 15 credit hours that will all be taken as credit at NMSU and will count towards my pre-requisites. I love each and every one of my classes and look forward to going to school every day. I am taking an intercultural com-munications course which is teaching me how to overcome intercultural barriers and apply it to my life in Spain. My favorite class is Spanish History and Culture through Film, because I have learned so much about so many aspects of Spain through watching movies. Tapas, a close second, is a class about the gastronomy in Spain where my peers and I get to cook 12 different Spanish dishes every week. This has been very useful because, even though Spanish was my first language, I could not

read restaurant menus and understand what ingredients were being used in the dishes. The Mediterranean diet is a whole new world of flavors and recipes that I have never encountered before. With the combination of these three classes and my conversation class, I have been able to ap-ply them to my life here in Spain. Every-thing I have learned has been extremely useful and has helped me adjust to my new lifestyle. I have not only been learning a lot but also getting to travel every weekend. I believe Sevilla is the perfect place to study abroad because the southern part of Spain has a considerable amount of history in towns that are all an hour apart and easy to access through cheap bus and train tickets.

Traveling in Europe is greatly cheaper than within the States. I have been able to go to Portugal, Italy, Germany, Austria, and the Netherlands. I was even able to go to Africa and visit the country of Morocco. There is a point in Morocco and Spain where one can stand and see the other country because only a small part of an ocean is separating them. I have definitely taken advantage of my three-day weekends but also living in a country that has a different culture than my own. Span-ish people have taught me how to enjoy life and company and how to be more flexible with my time. Everything in the United States is go, go, go because there is never enough time in the day, but the Spanish view time with great length. This is prob-ably why Spain is the most sleep-deprived country in Europe. Dinner is served, at the earliest, 9 p.m. and the nightlife doesn’t arrive at its peak until 2 a.m. The concept of siestas is very popular because there has to be some time made to sleep. Siestas are

taken so seriously that every day between 2-6 p.m. some stores and restaurants close down for their lunch and siesta time. These small but significant customs in Spanish culture are what have allowed me to fall deeply in love with Spain and even more so Sevilla. I am so sad I could not stay an-other semester, especially because there are so many traditional fiestas in the spring, but nonetheless, I am incredibly blessed to have had this opportunity. I never thought I would be able to study abroad but all I had to do was open my mind to the pos-sibility. To the underclassmen reading this, I hope you can take the time to consider visiting NMSU’s study abroad office or even contact me because this is the time to take advantage of what could be an incred-ible life-changing experience.

CPP Mentor Program has Scavenger Hunt!!

On November 13, CPP Mentors took their Freshmen Mentees on a fun scavenger hunt around the NMSU campus. Brandy Hernandez, lead co-ordinator, said “The group split up into teams and went around campus tak-ing pictures of the listed objects and brought back special items for points. The big prize? Bragging rights!” A fun time was had by all! The 2018-2019 Mentorship Program for CPP freshmen is a pilot volunteer program. CPP sophomores and juniors volunteered as mentors to provide academic and moral support for the incoming CPP students. The Lady Anglers! Amy Buesing on left. Photo by Jorge Salgado/El Paso Inc. as seen in the Fall 2018 issue of El Paso Inc. magazine.

In October, I had an amazing op-portunity to travel with two long-time friends to a remote area in northern England. Later, the three of us traveled by train to Edin-burgh, Scotland. Prior to connecting with my friends Ro-sario and Martina, I

enjoyed a few days exploring Amsterdam. The primary reason for the trip was to attend the Triennial Meeting of TIGHR (The International Guild of Handhooking Rugmakers) in the Swaledale Valley of the English countryside. The picture of the sheep is an example of a rug/mat hooked with wool yarn. I’ve always found traveling to for-eign countries to be an eye-opening occur-rence. Seeing how other people live, work and play is interesting and learning about the history of the area certainly enhances my travel experience. I thoroughly enjoyed the museums where I visited especially the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam and the Swaledale Museum in Reeth, England. Another favorite of mine is to sample the local foods and flavors. In fact, one highlight of my time in Amsterdam was eating in a restaurant named Five Flies where my father, aunt and paternal grandparents ate lunch in 1949 (almost 70 years ago!). My least favorite food(s) were in northern England. I found the meals to be bland and simply boring. Next time I will know to pack some green chile to spice things up! Thank goodness for mashed potatoes to keep my energy levels sufficient for major walking and climbing. The countryside in England is hilly and the castles were quite large with multiple staircases! I’ve also included some pharma-cy-related photos from my trip. There are

Another semester has ended and another edition of CPP News Phlash is in the books. I hope you enjoy this newletter as much as we did creat-ing it. There are some great photos to enjoy and it is always fun to highlight CPP student’s accomplishments. The NMSU campus is very quiet without students. I enjoy the hus-tle and bustle of a college campus and that has now been replaced with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season. ‘Tis the season to count one’s blessings and re-connect with family and friends. ‘Tis the season to relax. ‘Tis the season to taste the food in front of us and sa-vor the flavors instead of gulping down a swallow of food while you are study-ing for a test or while driving to work. I hope each of you enjoy the magic of the season and I look forward to seeing you next year in 2019.

Phondly,

Amy’s 2018 Travel Adventuresby Amy Buesing

some subtle differences in how pharmacy is practiced in Europe when compared to pharmacy practice in the United States as you may note when reading the window signs in the Royal Pharmacy in Scotland. A visit to a replica of an 19th century village in England revealed how much pharmacy has changed in the last century as evidenced in the old timey pharmacy photo! Another passion of mine is fly-fishing with the Lady Anglers of the Mesilla Valley Fly Fishing Club. I was first introduced to fly-fishing through an organization called Casting for Recovery designed to provide support for breast can-cer survivors through nature. December

22nd marks my 8th year of breast cancer “thrivorship” (a play on the word survivor-ship). A huge thank you to everyone who helped support me during my treatment and beyond, especially my dear colleagues Deb Franzoy and Traci White. Good things can come out of hard time. I would have never met the Lady Anglers without breast cancer.
