Chancellor IntroductionTheUniversityofIllinoisatUrbana-Champaignisapre-eminentpublicuniversity,oneofthenation’soriginalland-grantschoolsandaninstitutionwithglobalreach.Wearehometofaculty,studentsandstafffromeverystateinthenationandfrommorethan100countries.Together,weareacommunitywithabroaddiversityofidentities,practicesandthoughts.
Creatingacommunityofdiversevoices,perspectives,experiences,andidentitiesisessentialtoourexcellence.Itis,indeed,theonlysustainableroadtoexcellence.
We,asaninstitutionandasacommunity,havearesponsibilitytomodeldiversityinpracticeandwealsohavearesponsibilitytoleadtheintellectualandphilosophicaldiscussionsthatopennewavenuesofunderstandingandcreateamoreinclusiveworld.
Wearecommittedtobeingtheplacewheretheseconversationsbeginandwhererobustdebatecanreallytakeroot.Andthisdialogueisimportantbecausetheknowledgeandunderstandingthatcomeoutofitdoesn’tsimplyenduppublishedinscholarlyjournalsoracademicpapers.Thisenhancedunderstandingthenbecomesthebuildingblocksthathelptransformhowweallliveandworkina21stcentury,globalcommunity.
Todeliveronthisambitiouspromise,wemustbecommittedtofosteringadiversecampus–notmeasuredonlybynumbers–butbyactions.Itisn’tenoughtohavemanydifferentvoicesanddifferentperspectives.Ourgoalistobeacampuswhereallofthosevoicesareencouragedtospeakandwhereallofthoseideasarevalued.

Inclusive Illinois Day InclusiveIllinoisDaywasheldonSeptember24,2014asacampus-wideeventthatofferedeachcollege,department,andunitanopportunitytoshowtheirsupportofaninclusivecampuscommunitythroughitsprograms,activities,andclassesrelatedtodiversity,andtodemonstrateitscommitmenttodiversityandinclusion.AspeciallectureonbehalfoftheChancellor’sLectureSeriesandaspartofthe“InclusiveIllinoisDayLectureSeriesonDiversityandCulturalUnderstanding”entitled“WorkForceDiversity:A21stCenturyDiscussion”wasgivenbyTedChilds,formerVicePresidentofIBMGlobalWorkforceDiversity.
Inclusive Illinois Campus Conversations on Diversity: Duringspring2015,InclusiveIllinoisembarkeduponalarge-scalecampusconversationondiversity.Eachcollegeandunitexecutedeventstoexplorethequestion:“Howdowebuildan
inclusiveIllinoisforourcollegeorunit?”Simultaneously,InclusiveIllinoishostedsixworkshopsandlecturestoinformthediscussionstakingplaceineachofthecollegesandunits.
Theseeventsculminatedinfourcampus-wideconversationsondiversity.Theseconversationswereheldwithgraduateandprofessionalstudents,undergraduatestudents,faculty,andstaff.EachconversationconsistedofapaneldiscussingtheuniquewaysdiversityandinclusionhaveimpactedtheirworkoracademicexperienceattheUniversityofIllinois.ThediscussionsalsoprovidedanopportunityforparticipantstoreflectuponthepanelinformationandofferrecommendationsforbuildingamoreinclusiveIllinois.Theconversationsconcludedwithsenioradministratorsmeetingtoreviewfindingsfromthefirstthreeconversations,reflectuponworkconductedinthecollegesandunitsandnationalissuesofdiversityandinclusionwhichimpacttheIllinoisexperience,andofferrecommendationsaboutbuildingamoreinclusiveIllinois.

During spring 2015, Inclusive Illinois embarked upon a large-scale campus conversation on diversity. Each college and unit executed events to explore the question “How do we build an inclusive Illinois for our college or unit?”

3rd Annual Faculty Women of Color in the AcademyThethirdannualFacultyWomenofColorintheAcademyConferencewasheldonApril10-11,2015atthei-HotelandConferenceCenter.Almost300womenofcolorfaculty,universityadministrators,post-doctoralfellows,andgraduatestudentsattended.Thetwodayconferencefeaturedworkshopsandspeakers,suchasDr.KerryAnnRockquemore,PresidentandCEOoftheNationalCenterforFacultyDevelopment&Diversity.Contentfocusedonimprovingconditionsforpre-tenurefacultybycreatingsupportivecommunitiesforwritingproductivityandsupportingwork/lifebalance.
Newthisyear,theAdministratorTrackwasaddedforhighereducationprofessionalstofocusonmentoring,leadership,careernavigation,andprofessionaldevelopment.TheadministrationtrackwasledbyDr.GeneaceWilliamsJ.D.andDr.DevonaPierre.TheGraduateStudentTrackworkshopswereledbythreedynamicUniversityofIllinoisfacultymembers:Dr.IsabelMolina,Dr.SandraRodriguez-Zas,andDr.YoonPak.
Almost 300 women of color faculty, university administrators, post-doctoral fellows, and graduate students attended.
WorkshoptopicsincludedCrossingtheFinishLine:FinishingGradSchool;StartingaNewRace:VisioningaCareer;andGettingaRunningStartontheTenureTrack:KnowingtheRulesoftheGame.

TheOfficeofPublicEngagementsupportsfaculty,staff,studentresearch,andteachinginitiativesthatpositivelyimpactourcommunitythroughdiverseprogramsandservices.ThePublicEngagementGrantprogramprovidesfundingforcommunity-relatedprojects,scholarlywork,creativeendeavors,coursedevelopment,andotheractivitieswithinthebroadframeworkofpublicengagement.Anumberofgrantsawardedin2014,supportedprogramsfocusedon
The Public Engagement Grant program provides funding for community-related projects, scholarly work, creative endeavors, course development, and other activities within the broad framework of public engagement.

Duringthe2014-2015academicyear,policinginadiversesocietywasattheforefrontofthenationalconversation.Officersandmembersofthecampuscommunityworkedcloselytocreatepositivedialoguesleadingtodeeperunderstandingofthechallengesthatgroups,individuals,andofficersfaceinpolicingencounters.
TheInternationalStudentSafetyCommitteewasformedtoidentifyuniquesafetyissuesthatinternationalstudentsface.Thiscommitteedevelopedlearningandtrainingopportunitiesforbothofficersandstudents.Internationalstudentswereabletodirectlyinteractwithofficersininformalandfunsettingswhichgavestudentsandofficersachancetolaughwithandlearnfromoneanother.

“A Taste of ACES” Cultural Experience: OnNovember18,2014,ACEShostedacollege-wideeventthatfeaturedcuisinerepresentingthevariousculturesthatcomprisetheACESfamily.Theeventservedasawaytoimmerseover200students,facultyandstaffintothediverseculturesrepresentedintheCollegeofACES.FoodsfromaroundtheworldprovidedanopportunitytobuildcommunitywithintheCollegeofACESandfosterunderstandingofdifferences.

University of Illinois ExtensionUniversityofIllinoisExtensionengagedindiversityandinclusiontrainingwithover700ExtensionstaffmemberslocatedthroughoutthestateduringtheweekofOctober21stthroughthe24th,2014.Visions,Inc.facilitatedtrainingsinanefforttoequipindividuals,organizations,andcommunitieswiththetoolsneededtothriveinadiverseworld,removestructuralandculturalbarriersthatpreventfullandequitableparticipation,andtohelpcreateenvironmentswheredifferencesarerecognized,understood,appreciated,andutilizedforthebenefitofall.

TheDivisionofDisabilityResourcesandEducationalServices(DRES)implementedthefirstofitskindDisability Ally Program inspring2015.Theprogramisdesignedtofacilitateawareness,understanding,andcompetencyofdisabilitybyconnectingfaculty,staff,andstudentswithresources,knowledge,andrelationshipsofdisabilityasdiversity.Theaimistofostercross-campuscollaboration,education,andexperiencesthatallowallmembersofourcampuscommunitytoincludedisabilityasdiversityinconversation,action,andphilosophy.

College of BusinessUndergraduate Student Business Diversity Exchange Approximately120attendees(students,staff,andcorporatepartners)spentthedayparticipatinginaconference-styleprogramthatincludedmini-casestudies,facilitateddiscussions,akeynotespeaker,andleadershipexercises.Thelearninggoalsfocusedontheimportanceofdiversityandinclusivity.Oneoftheagendatopicsincluded:“howtomaketheCollegemoreinclusive.”
First Annual College of Business International Student Day OnApril9,2015theCollegeofBusinesslaunchedInternationalStudentDaytocelebratethediversityofitsinternationalstudents.StudentsfromcountriesrepresentedintheCollegeofBusinessstudentbodyhostedtableswithart,music,performances,andfood.

2014 Youth Literature Festival We Need Diverse Books Panel InOctober,theCollegeofEducationhostedtheYouthLiteratureFestival,whichincludedtheWeNeedDiverseBooksPanelmoderatedbyDr.VioletHarris.Panelistsdiscussedtheimportanceofmulticulturalbooksforyoungreaders.BothcommunitymembersandIllinoispre-serviceteacherslearnedhowtoincludeliteraturefromauthorsofmany
identitiesandperspectivesintotheirclassroomsandhomes.
2015 Cline Symposium Educationprofessors,Dr.LorenzoBaber,Dr.DeniseHood,andDr.ChristopherLubienski,participatedintheClineSymposium“RestoringthePromiseofHigherEducation.”Theprofessorssharedtheirresearchandperspectivesonthequestion“IsHigherEducationStillthe
GreatEqualizer?”anddiscussedthepolicyandpracticechangesthatareneededtomakeourcampusesmoreaccessibleanddiverse.
Volunteer Advocacy ProjectDr.MeghanBurke,AssistantProfessorinSpecialEducation,developedtheVolunteerAdvocacyProjectwiththesupportoftheVanderbiltKennedyCenter.Theprojectprovidesfamilieswitha40-hourtrainingonspecialeducationpolicyandadvocacy.TheprojectexpandeditsimpactbyworkingwithSpanishspeakingfamiliesintheChicagoareawhooftenfaceevengreaterbarriersinseekingservicesfortheirchildren.

Morrill Engineering Program TheMorrillEngineeringProgram(MEP)attheUniversityofIllinoisempowersAfrican-American,Hispanic,andNativeAmericanengineeringstudents,supportstheirsuccessasscholars,andleveragesacommunityofstudents,staff,andalumnitoachieveexcellenceinengineering.TheMEPcommunityworkstoenhancetheundergraduateexperiencethroughacademicsupport,scholarshipassistance,workexperience,andmore.
TheMEPAnnualAwardsBanquetwasheldFriday,May1,2015atthei-HotelandConferenceCenter.ThiseventrecognizesandcelebratestheprogressandscholasticachievementsofourMEPstudents.

College of Fine and Applied ArtsTheCollegeofFineandAppliedArtsfocusedoninclusivitythroughevents,studentworkabroad,research,anddiscussions.TheSeptemberforumFuture of Academic Freedom and the Arts featuredpresentationsfromfacultymembers,TylerDenmead(ArtandDesign),RyanGriffis(ArtandDesign),StacyHarwood(UrbanandRegionalPlanning),andGabrielSolis,(Music)ontheroleofartinaddressingsocialinequalitiesandprejudices.StaffandfacultymembersofthenewlyestablishedTask Force on Recruitment and Retention werechargedwithassessingopennessanddiversityinthecollegeintheareasoffaculty
recruitment,hiring,andretention.Thetaskforcealsoexaminedtodeterminehowwellinstitutionalstructuresaresupportingaculturethatallowseveryonetoflourish.
Recruitment effortsaimedatunderrepresentedpopulationsledtoa12percentincreaseinLatina/Latinostudentsanda37percentincreaseinAfricanAmericanstudentswhoacceptedoffersasincomingfreshmenforfall2015.Latinas/LatinosandAfricanAmericansmakeup19percentofFAA’s2015freshmanclass.
ThepublicdiscussionseriesUncorked and On Topic waslaunchedtoengagethe
communitymoredeeplyinpressingsocialissues.Facultymembersfromdifferentdisciplines—GabrielSolis(Music)andLaurieHogin(ArtandDesign),WilliamSullivan(LandscapeArchitecture)andJenniferMonson(Dance),JorgeLucero(ArtandDesign)andLisaGayeDixon(Theatre),andSaraBartumeus(Architecture)andMikeRoss(KrannertCenter)—werepairedinmoderatedintellectualexchangesthataddressedsubjectsincludingsocialandeconomicdisparitiesinhealthcareservicesandaccesstothearts.

Blackness, Gender, and Contemporary African Dance OnOctober9,2014,KrannertArtMuseumhosteditssecondGlobalAfricaCommunityForuminKAM’sGelvinNoelGallery.Thisyear’sforumexploredthemany-layeredexperiencesofblackness,masculinity,andcomingofage.Directedbydancer-choreographerC.KemalNance,LecturerinDanceatIllinois,theeventfeaturedasuiteofthreeinterconnectedperformancesinvolvingdance,voice,andpersonaltestimonialsfromaudiencememberswhohadrehearsedearlierwithNance.DancersincludedDjibrilCamara,masterdancerandchoreographeratIllinoiswhoperformed,insilence,thedununba,acompetitivemen’sdanceassociatedwithagegrouphierarchiesinupperGuinea;NyamaMcCarthyBrownfromIndianaUniversity,whoperformedwithher2-yearoldson;andStaffordBerryJr.,fromDenisonUniversity,whojoinedNanceinanintimateduetofdanceandspokenword.

Art + Design Visitors SeriesCampusvisitsbyartistHankWillisThomasandfilmmakerTomKalin,aspartoftheArt+DesignVisitorsSeriesco-sponsoredandhostedbyKrannertArtMuseum,promoteddiversityandinclusionbybroadeningstudents’typicalworldviewsonrace,class,gender,andsexualityastheyrelatetoartisticproductionandprofessionalizationinthevisualarts.
HankWillisThomasisarenownedartistbasedinNewYorkCity.Hissculptures,photography,andpublicartinstallationssuccinctlyproblematizelonghistoriesofraceandracismintheUnitedStates,connecting,forinstance,currentsports-obsessedculturearoundblackmenwithimageryfromlynchingandadvertising.
SpeakingalongwithfellowUniversityofIllinois,Urbana-Champaignalum,LisaErf,onApril9,TomKalinimpresseduponthestudentsthepoliticalpower
ofcollectiveartisticaction.KalinwasafoundingmemberofGranFury,agroupofartistswhodesignedanddistributedgraphicsforACTUPNewYorkduringtheAIDScrisis.Makinggenderandsexualdifferencecentraltohisfilmmaking,whichiscomprisedofbeautifulappropriatedimagesandvibrantindividualportraitsandperformances,KalinisalsoknownforhisproductionworkonthefeaturefilmsGoFish(RoseTroché,1994)andIShotAndyWarhol(MaryHarron,1996).

TheDivisionofGeneralStudiesbroughtissuesofinclusivenesstotheforefrontwithtargetedprofessionaldevelopmentactivitiesthroughouttheyear.ThroughtheInclusive DGS Lunch and Learn series,DGSadvisorsandadministratorsengagedinfacilitateddialoguearoundtopicssuchasmulticulturaladvocacyinstudenthousingandinterfaithissuesontheIllinoiscampus.InFebruary
2015,theDGSDiversityandInclusionCommitteehostedafacilitatoroftheIntercultural Development Inventory (IDI)whoimplementedtheassessmentanddeliveredatwo-daytraininginwhichadvisorsandadministratorsreceivedgroupandindividualfeedbackandcreatedactionplansforfurthergrowthanddevelopment.DGSstaffalsoparticipatedinavarietyofothertrainingsrelatedtodiversityintheclassroomanddiversityinadvising,includingaMay2015NACADAwebinar,“AcademicAdvisingand

TheGraduateCollegerecognizesandembracesthepowerindiversityandiscommittedtobroadeningparticipationingraduateeducation.Lastyear,thecollegehostedseveralprogramstoincreaseenrollmentofU.S.racial/ethnicpopulationstraditionallyunderrepresentedingraduateprograms.The2014 Illinois Summer Research Symposiumshowcasedtheresearchofmorethan150newandaspiringunderrepresentedminority(URM)graduatestudents.Presenterswerefromsevenprogramsthatprovideearlyresearchopportunitiestoundergraduates,includingtheSummer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) at Illinois aswellastheSummer Pre-Doctoral Institute(SPI)forgraduatestudentsatIllinois.
ThroughASPIRE,ourfallapplication/campusvisitprogram&fellowshipcompetition,andtheCommunity of Scholars,ourspringcampusvisitprogramfornewlyadmittedgraduatestudents,theGraduateCollegebrought129URMgraduatestudentstocampustomeetwithfacultyandstaffinacademicprogramsandtoconnectthemwithadiversecommunityofunderrepresentedscholarsacrosscampus.
These initiatives help forge pathways for URM students by providing opportunities for early research experiences, fostering mentoring relationships with faculty, and creating a community of URM peers across disciplines – factors that can have profound impact for these graduate students.

OnThursdayMarch11,theCollegeofVeterinaryMedicineheldaconversationondiversityforfacultyandstafftoaddressthequestionof“HowcanwebuildamoreinclusiveIllinois?”Thediscussionutilizedthe“SurveyofCollegeClimatesatAll28USCollegesandSchoolsofVeterinaryMedicine:PreliminaryFindings.”Thisnationwidesurveyprovidedasnapshotofclimaterelatedtodiversityissuesinthe28USvetschools.Itaddressed,amongotherthings,studentcomfortlevelwithrespecttodifferencesinrace,ethnicity,sexualorientation,andreligion;theperceivedlevelofinstitutionalsupportforunderrepresentedstudents;thepersistencelevelofoffensivelanguagewithinthecolleges;andthedegreetowhichstudentsexperiencedharassment.Atthisdiversitymeeting,DeanConstableexpressedacommitmenttobuildingamoreinclusiveCollegeofVeterinaryMedicineandhighlightedtheexpressedgoaloftheAmericanVeterinaryMedicalAssociationfortheprofessiontomirrorthegrowingdiversityofthecommunitiesveterinariansserveandtounderstandthevariedneedsofthosecommunities.

OnSeptember31,2014,identifyIllinoisco-sponsoredaFootball 101(learningthefundamentalsofAmericanfootball)withChineseStudent&ScholarServices(CSSA)onSeptember31,2014,forinternationalstudentsatMemorialStadium,whichincludedinvolvementCoachBeckmanandhisstaff.520internationalstudentsparticipatedintheevent,whichwas
morethantwicethepreviousattendancerecord.
IdentifyIllinoisandCSSAhostedaninaugural“Basketball Carnival”attheUbbenbasketballfacility250internationalstudentsattendedtheevent.Theeventallowedparticipantstodobasketball
