    Keep On Moving

    Creative, inclusive and good value ways of workingA day to celebrate the fantastic work happening in InclusionNorth MemberAreas that supports the inclusion of people withLearning Disabilities and their families

    This event is free to Inclusion North member areas.Each area can send 5 people.

    Newcastle Event

    We are hosting this with the North East Learning DisabilityPartnership.

    The event is free for up to 5 reps from the Learning DisabilityPartnership member groups across the North East.

    People from non member groups can attend either ofthese events at a cost of 50 per person if places areavailable.

    Changes at Inclusion North

    New Temporary Office Manager

    As you may now Danny has now left Inclusion North afternearly 3 years of being our Office Manager.

    We have really enjoyed working with Danny and wish him allthe luck in the future.

    Improving Health and Lives: The Learning DisabilitiesObservatory

    Have you got a learning disability? Asking the question

    and recording the answer for NHS healthcare providers

    Health service organisations need to be able to identify peoplethey look after who have learning disabilities in order both tomake appropriate reasonable adjustments and to monitor thatthis is happening satisfactorily.

    Improving Health and Lives: The Learning Disabilities

    Observatory has published a new paper setting out the legalreasons why this is essential and a number of practical issuesin identifying people and coding the presence of disability ininformation systems and statistical datasets.

    Department of Health wants to find good practice in

    supporting people with learning disabilities

    The Government are asking Local Areas for good practice in

    making services better for people with learning disabilities.

    Areas have to reply by 13th December then the National

    Valuing Families Forum and National Forum members will visit

    some areas to check out the good practice

    Mencap: Have you or someone you know had yourrespite/short breaks cut?

    Mencap has heard from some parents and carers of bothchildren and adults with a learning disability that the respitesupport they receive from the local authorities has beenreduced.

    They have heard that some parents have been 're-assessed'as no longer needing the same level of respite/short breaksupport they have had in the past, and that many respite/shortbreak facilities are being threatened with closure.

    Mencap would like to hear from anyone who has been affectedby this and have put together a 5 minute online survey forpeople to complete.

    Challenging Behaviour Foundation

    Take action: stop another Winterbourne

    The care workers involved in the abuse scandal atWinterbourne View have now been sentenced.

    However, people with a learning disability are still being sent toplaces like Winterbourne View, often far away from their lovedones, where they are at risk of abuse and neglect. This must

    stop.The government's final report on what they will do to stop thishappening again is due out soon.

    Evaluation of Choice Support initiative - replacing wakingnight staff with sleep-in staff

    Better Nights by Professor Roger Ellis and ProfessorDavid Sines

    This report called Better Nights looks at what difference there

    was when waking night staff with sleep-in staff. This was part ofa process by Choice Support and Southwark Council to breakdown a large block contract into personalised services.

    Check the date on your disabled Metro Pass

    Some disabled Metro passes run out on 31st March 2013

    You can check the date of when your pass runs out by lookingat the expiry date on your pass

    You can get a new Metro pass 3 months before it runs out. Youwill need to re-apply through Social Services.

    International Day of Disabled People Evening Event

    In partnership with The Sage Gateshead

    To celebrate this years International Day of Disabled People,

    Disability North in partnership with The Sage Gateshead, is

    delighted to announce an evening of performances by disabled

    people and inclusive groups from around the region featuring

    song, dance, music, drama and film.

    The event takes place at 7.00pm on Tuesday 18 December

    2012 and will be hosted by Jonathan Miles from BBC Radio

    Newcastle.

    The Academies in Newcastle are back

    The two new Academies "The Band" and the "TheatreAcademy" will give you the opportunity to learn new skills,devise your own performances or music, and show your workto lots of people.

    Good News! Stephen becomes first councillor in the UKwith Down's syndrome

    Councillor Stephen Green, 47, previously made the headlinesfor learning to read music and performing his first piano recital.

    Very recently he was elected as member of Nuthall Parish

    Council in Nottinghamshire after his predecessor, Councillor

    Paul Simpson, stepped down.

    New fund to support local charities helping disadvantaged

    people across the UK.

    Grants of up to 5,000 are available for small local charities or

    local projects of national charities.

    Applications can be made at any Santander branch by

    completing a short form.

    There are no closing dates and successful charities will be

    notified within two months of applying.
