Title tag: This meta tag is one of the most important parts of SEO because it tells a

search engines what your page is about and it shows up as the title of your webpage on a

search engine results page. As a result, whenever possible, keywords should be included

in the title tag. Additionally, title tags should be no more than seven or eight words and

less than 70 characters because this is the maximum number of letters and spaces

displayed as a Google title. If the title is longer it will run off and include three trailing

dots. Limiting title tags to eight words is recommended because Google places weight

(level of importance) on each word. Therefore, the more words you have, the less weight

applied to each word.

Meta description: This tag is less influential in affecting your SEO strategy but is

important because it provides a description of what the page is about and shows up under

the website title in the search engine results listing. Keyword terms will appear bolded to

the reader and are important click drivers — they show the reader that your content and

their query are directly related. Best practices designates use of one or two engaging

sentences that accurately describe the page content and should be kept to approximately

160 characters. Similar to the title tag, any description longer than 160 characters will be

cut off and followed by three trailing dots. In some cases, however, it’s common for the

description to be cut short and may in fact improve click rates.
