fl' The PrincipleBehind the EdwardTiltins Disk

Although the pivot and seating principle follolr, edin this nen valr,e is not common in the valve field, itis a sirnple principle and can be clescribed in simplegeometry terms.

In the ciiagram on the right the bocl,v seatine surfaceis part of a cone l'ith an al)ex at A. Ihe seatins surfacehas a r'lidth \V. If a perpenclicular to the cone is clrartnat B on the srnaller seat cliameter ancl at C on thelarger seat cliameter these lill intelsect at D (abol'ethe center line). The seating action ivill be satisfactoryif the pivot is locatecl inside the angle C D E. lf the

pivot is on the left oI lirre C D the disk will lift awav

from the seat at C as the r,ah'e oPens. Likel'ise the diskcannot sling through at C as the vah,e closes since

an interlerence exists be,voncl the seated position. T'he

same conclitions prer, ail at B if the pivot is on the

right of the perpendicuiar B E.

Gluick,QuiefClosing

The Eclr, varcl tilting clisk check valve is designed t<r

close as quickl,v as possible. It minimizes the loucJ,

damaging slamming ancl vibration caused lr,hen highveiocity reverse flor,r' is allo'u,ecl to build up beforcthe completion of closing"

In boiler feedlr, ater: applications, for example, as

higher pressure units have becorne more common

there has been a resulting increase in feedwater veloci-

ties and slamming, and an increased need for the

features incorporated in the Edward tilting disk check

valve.

Quick closing is achievecl through a co nbinationof several design and constmction features. The diskis dome shaped to avoid hesitation of disk morion orclosing, colnmon to conventional flat disks. The rnostefficient dome shape was selected after full-scale tests

in the Edr.l'ard iaboratories. For minimum pendulumperiod - an important factor in assuring quick closing

- the disk pivot is located one-quarter of the seat

diameter from the seat center..

Ail disk surfaces are open to iine fluid, so that nodashpot action can clelav closing. The disk pivors onpin supports having chrome-plated bearings for mini-mum friction. Tnrsion springs enclosed in the pivotpins heip speed the closing action, although thedisk is counterweighted sufficiently to close aurcr-maticall,v 'lvithout aid from rhe springs r,vhether thevalve is in vertical or in horizontal position. Thesprings exert maximum {orce at full opening. As thesprings are fully enclosed in the pins thev are norsubject to possible harmlul effects of line fluids orforeign matrer. Nor can spring pieces get into thepiping if spring failure should ever occur.

When tested in the Edward Research and Experi-mental Laboratories these springs withstood millionsof open-close-open cycles wirhout failure.

Quick.closing with.rninimtrm moment of inertia {fly wheeleffect] results from iocation of pivot pin at most efficient pivotpoint and from dome shape which avoids closino hesitationcommon to flat disks.

Two aids to quick closingChrome-plated bearings o{ pivot pins and torsion springs en-closed in pins help speed closing action of countenveighfei disk.

I

Tight SeotingTight seating results from the unique design and

operation of the new tilting disk coupled with itsmated seat. T'he disk rotates on pins located near butabove its center. The side of the disk opposite itsface is designed to function as a colrnterr.veight. Gravityalone is sufficient to seat the disk lthen the valr'e is

installed in either vertical or horizontal position; how-

ever, a torsion spring is incorporated in each pivotpin to speed closing and thus to help eliminateslamming. At zero velocrt,v, gravity aided by the tor-sion springs tilts the disk into the closed position -that is, the clisk face (inner cone) settles on the seat

iouter cone).

Unlike a s\,ring check valve, which seats against a

flat face the same \\''ay a gate stop valve d<.res, theEdrvard one-piece tilting clisk valve seats on a taperedseat in a manner much like that of a globe stop valve.

Because of this cone-r'r'ithin-a-cone, both gravitv andthe force ol reverse florv l'ork together to promoteperfect alignment and efficient, tieht seating. Theincluded seat angle - rvhich varies from pressttre class

to pressure class - is that angle rvhich experience has

shor,r'n gives efficient seating rvhile rninimizing thepossibility of the disk l'eclging in the seat. These are

continuing advantages, tencling to p1'c1t1ote good align-ment with resulting tight seating even if the pivotsurfaces should become ltotn ftorn prolonged service.

A Stellite faced disk ancl ir-rtegral Stellite seat silethe Edrvard one-piece tiitine disk check valve maxi-mum erosion resistance and assure maximum servicelife rvith minimunr maintenance requilements.

Proved in supercritical steam service -

Edward One-Piece Tiit-ing Disk Check Valves installed in Ohio supercritical steamgenerating station operating at pressures above 4500 psi.

Mqximum OpeningThrough a unique nerv design of disk, counterweight

and pivot pin maximurn opening is achieved through-out even the lowest flolv ranges.

In the open position the disk rests against a stop. Thus, there is no excessive r'lear-producing flutter ofthe disk under normal flor'v conditions. On the otherhand a typical s'lr'ing check valve never reaches a stopand is continually moving up and clort'n. Naturally, this tends to wear the pivot pin.

Features of the new disk are its spherically concavebottom which imparts high lift, a thin cross sectiottwhich imparts good coefficient of flow, and unifolmthickness r,r'hich offers best resistance to h)'drostaticpressure.

Low Pressure DropAs sholr''n by the accompanying pressure drop curves,

this series of valves sets ne\r records for lo'r'v Pressureclrop. This is the result of straight-through design, strearnlined body contor-rrs and streamlined clisk.

The typical vah'e teaches full opening at a velocityof 8 feet per seconcl. \Vhen fuilv open the pressuredrop is approximate equivalent to a mere 50 diametersof pipe.

The most econornical valrre is the valve ccrrectlysized. Too small a valve 'r'vill have high pressure dropand will waste po\!'er. T'oo large a valt'e is a h-aste ofmoney. The disk rnay hug the valve seat at lorv flowand cause vibration and wear.

Here is a simple rnethod for checking valve size.

Select the follor,rring data:

\'V -F-lo'u' rate in pounds per hour.

yv -square root of specific volume (basecl on oper-ating pressure and temperature) of fluid in cubicfeet per pouncl. N[a,v be obtained for ltaier andsteam fronr flou, index table.

A -Port area of valve in square inches. llay be

obtained from Valve Port Areas Table forvalve considered.

Insert this clata in the formula y+f : Echr, arcl Florv

Index.

X,{ark this Florv Index on the bottom horizontal lineof the chart and read up to the curve to obtain thepressure drop. For best performance valve should beselected to operate fully open.

rnay be calculated as follcr'vs:

-= x Flow Index.
